Is CT scan and MRI straight after colonoscopy normal?

Hello,

I'm a 41 year old male whose father and parternal grandfather both died of bowel cancer at 65 and 62.

I've been passing blood routinely for some time and the local GP blood tests showed no untoward signs and didn't seem keen to engage further.

After several occasions of haemorraging blood over the last few months I had a private medical consultation who advised he thought it was likely just haemmoroids.

I've just had a colonoscopy this morning and good news there were no haemmoroids but they did discover a 30mm polypoid lesion in the lower area which was described as friable.

They have taken biopsies and immediately booked me in for an MRI and CT scan.

Should I be worried?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

  • Thanks. Whilst I've got to wait a month for the initial consultation - I believe the scan results will show up an abnormality almost instantly? Is it usual for this to be shared before the consultaion meeting/at the end of the scan rather than having to wait?

  • The scan will be reviewed by a radiologist. They will obviously pick up the lesion they've found already but they would review all the results and make a plan before contacting you with any other findings, as so as they can answer any questions appropriately.

  • Perhaps wishful thinking on my part that I may be able to get away without having to wait as long!

One of the symptoms that triggered everything is that over the last few months I have had a number of episodes where I haemorrhage blood for several hours - is is that a common sign of cancer or something else?

  • my husband had a colonoscopy on 16th jan 2020 and has just had his appointment for his ct scan on the 28th jan

he has 1  malignant polypoidal tumour (30mm) they have taken 7 biopsies its in his rectum approx 8cm .I assume that means 8cm up his rectum he was told this the day of his colonoscopy

his first symptoms where on the 4th dec 2019 went to the doctors that afternoon

he didnt lose a great deal of blood and not on every occasion his stools where thinner than normal

from that day I have kept a diary of each day what was happening and any symptoms his blood tests all came back normal he is not anaemic.he done a bowel test they send you every two years 18 months ago and that came back Normal so I am keeping my fingers crossed we may have caught it early

    i hope you have aswell

let me know how you get on

  • Thank you for replying and am sorry to hear yours and your husband’s news. I hope you have caught it early and it’s good news to come.

    Sam

  • Hi Sam,

The usual process is that the scan is done and the radiographer checks that the quality is good.

A radiologist checks the scan and writes up a report which then goes to a multi-disciplinary team.

The team discusses the case and your consultant discusses with you their conclusions and recommendations.

    Hope this jelps.

    Dave

  • I know the waiting is awful. I've looked after a lot of people who have had procedures done and contact us about results, some of them many times.
bleeding is one of the symptoms of cancer. The exact appearance of the blood would vary depending on the exact location and the amount of time people bleed for would vary too.

  • Thankyou Sam_H for answering I hope all goes well for you

it's a frightening time when you get the news but we must stay positive and talk dont bottle things up

it is happening to my husband and he seems to be the brave one I went to pieces and then I thought get a grip of yourself  he is the one it is happening to  and he needs you to be strong for him

you must let me know how things are going with you.

  • He got his results quickly in terms of diagnosing a malignant tumour after his colonoscopy.

ive just had my MRI and CT scans today.

Frustratingly it seems I’m not getting my first consultation with the colorectal surgeon for another month as he’s too busy.

I’m wondering if they will at least call me to tell me the results sooner than this or whether I should ask for a different consultant.

  • Hoping you and your husband are doing ok?
