Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi Kadash

I definitely will be chasing it up in that case! I'll get on the phone with the hospital tomorrow as at the moment it seems nothing is moving any further.

The only thing we can do now is really think positively and hope that the removal of your polyp is a smooth procedure, you're in great hands, the surgeons know what they are doing and they are going to do their absolute best to help you! I know it's so hard to think positively and to not just keep having complete meltdowns, but taking it one step at a time sounds good. I'll have really good days and really bad days, but I let myself be sad when I need to.

I'm not currently working I'm being furloughed, so I have so much extra time on my hands and the only thing I do with this extra time is get deep in my thoughts which isn't great.

I totally agree that having you guys to message is so helpful for my mental health. It is very reassuring to know we are all in this together, and I bet we will all come out of it stronger!! Xxx

  • Thank you so much for such a positive reply; you’ve really lifted my spirits. You're so right, we’ll come through this so much stronger .xxx

  • I'm so glad to know that I've lifted your spirits! I'm always here for a chat when you need one xx

  • Hi guys,

Been in A&E since 7am as I had a complete meltdown this morning after passing black stool.

They have taken bloods to check for infection and anaemia and so far everything is great but I am still panicking. What other reasons would there be for me to pass black stools? I'm currently waiting to be seen again by a doctor. Hopefully I'll get some answers.

    Kit xx

  • Hi KIt

I hope you are okay. How are things. Have they kept you in Hun or let you go home for now.

Have they found out why you have had black B/M. I hope you’ve got some answers. You did absolutely right to go into hospital. It’s absolutely the best thing you could have done. At least you’re having some tests done now. Let me know how things are Hun.

    xx

  • Hi Kadash,

They did a lot of tests and eventually let me go home. So they took my bloods to see if I'm anaemic but my haemoglobin level was quite high, it was 140 which is great so they said it is reassuring that there is no internal bleeding. I had finally been given a fit test though and now I'm just waiting for the results for that which I believe can take up to 2 weeks but I really hope they come back soon!

The docs said that as I'm already in the pathway for a colonoscopy the best thing they can suggest is to just wait till I get a date for it to go through. I know they are doing the best they can it's just so stressful for me right now. Xx

  • hi Kit

well at least you are home safely and have now got reassurance that your bloods are okay, so that’s a positive

You've done the FIT test so there’s is nothing now you can do except wait.

Even if you get a high/positive test result it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s is something terribly bad wrong. I think you know your own body so if you feel there’s is something there may well be, but, it’s not necessarily something major bad. It could be piles.

I try not to think about things. It will panic you if you do. If you feel yourself thinking just allow yourself half an hour or so to digest your thoughts and then get the vacuum out, go on TikTok (I love it lol) ....just do anything hun to stop you thinking for to long.

Let me know how you go with the results. Keep safe and chat soon.xx

  • Hi Kadash

I've been ringing my GP everyday since doing the fit test to see if they have results back yet because I'm so impatient! I hate being this impatient but it's hard not to be when it's constantly playing on your mind.

Did you get any blood tests to check if you were anaemic btw? It seems there is a correlation between having a high fit test score and being anaemic. I'm really trying to tell myself that I will be fine but it's hard.

I love tiktok too lol, I'm constantly trying to convince my boyfriend to make tiktoks with me but he's having none of it

I'll let you know as soon as my results come back. Take care xx

  • [@Kadash]‍ did they say when they will take out the polyps? How you feeling ? Any problems with going loo?

i have had such a dreadful time, still haven’t received an antenatal appointment, so can’t take any of my problems to the midwife has to be straight to the gp. Such an awful and worrying time to need to go hospital on a regular basis.

Claire I’m so glad the CT scan showed nothing!

  • Hi Kadash,

I'm absolutely over the moon, my fit test results have come back negative. Absolutely normal! I feel wonderful today.

I'm still going for my colonoscopy just incase, I should have a date for that by tomorrow. I've got an appointment for an abdominal ultrasound tomorrow as they feel I may have ovarian cysts.

I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow. Xx
