Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi guys, so basically I have been freaking out like crazy for about 6 months now if not longer. I experienced alot of blood within my toilet almost everytime I went about a year ago and I didn't mention it to anyone as after a few days it went so I put it down to piles. Recently my bowel habits have been changing between constipation that can last for about 3 days to diarrhea. I get quite a lot of stomach gurgling and it worries me alot as when i go to the toilet I find blood in it. I get pain in my abdomen and I never know if this is related to gas or not. My stools are thinner then what they should be and occasionally there is blood on the outside of my stool. I also get quite alot of mucus and sometimes when I go to the toilet it is just a lot of mucus more then average.

Bowel cancer has been found in my family before but so has chrons and pancritis. I've been tested for chrons and it came back negative so I know it's not that. I'm just scared of the worst.

I try to feel my stomach and I always freak myself out because I don't know what I'm truly feeling for. Go ogling all my symptoms and all that comes up is cancer. I've order for one of them fit kits that you can do at home, I'm waiting for it to come through but I'm still freaking out. I'm scared to what might happen. My partner is really supportive but I feel like I need to speak to people that have had similar symptoms. Worrying about everything is probably making me worse but no matter what I always end up googling something and then freaking out even more.

  • Hi Hun [@Zoelh]‍

its natural to worry and imagine every possible senario but blood doesn’t necessarily mean cancer hun. That said, I know it will be what’s in the back of your mind; I think it is with all of us. Have you reported your bloody mucus poops to your doctor. If not you must, immediately they open. If you have already what has your doctor said. Has he ordered the fit test for you or did you get one off the Internet. Surely a fit test will only tell you what you already know i.e. that there is blood in your poop so why bother with the test, why has he not referred younstraight to a consultant at the hospital so as not to waste time. Let me know how you go hun and chin up, remember you only hear the bad stories but there are good ones too.xx

  • Hey Kadash hun, I’ve been trying to stay calm for that little baby inside me. Sometimes I feel like not looking at my stools anymore to avoid the stress. I’m currently almost 6 Months. I’m due in December so they m hoping to be seen by February if I’m doing well.

Yep the blood is like a deep red within mucas so scary.

[@Zoelh]‍ hey I would I advice you to go to the gp and they should give a you fit test to do there and then no need to wait for a test to come. But if you see blood and  stick the stick right where you see the blood it will come up positive as these test are made to detect even the thinnest amount of blood.

  • Hey guys, I hope you and the baby are well [@Sabr]‍.

I have just taken my fit test due to having to wait after my cycle. My result is throwing me off. At the c point it was a very strong line and at the t point it was faint. Apparently this means there is still a positive result due to a second line appearing.

Will be calling my doctors in the morning but scared out of my mind still. Being only 19 my thoughts and feelings are all over the place. What if it is the worse

  • Hi hun @zoelh

I had to send my fit test off. Was your test a fob test. I know it’s a shock when you get a positive but hopefully you’ve spoken to your go and are getting sorted.

    hi [@Sabre]‍

how are you doing hun. A Christmas baby; how lovely. Is it your first baby. I hope you are managing to relax a little bit more, I know it’s difficult to but I hope you are.xx

  • Hey [@Kadash]‍  it was a fob one I got it of the online chemist. However due to the positive result I am gonna try and get a colonoscopy that's if they will give me one x

  • [@Zoelh]‍ hey hun, I did not realise you are only 19 years old.please try not to stress at all because your age is berymuch on your side. It’s more likely to be chrons or colitis. The likelyhood of it being anything else is almost 1 to 100,000. I hope this clams you down.

[@Kadash]‍ still worried still see the maroon mucas every time I go loo. I really want that sigmoidoscopy done.

  • Hey [@Sabr]‍  I have been in contact with my gp today, I've been booked in for bloods and some further tests as well as being referred to the hospital for a colonoscopy based on my symptoms and family history it's urgent.

How are you getting on, have they put you down for a sigmolidoscopy

  • [@Zoelh]‍ It’s great that they’ve given you a colonoscopy but in the meantime try not to worry ok, the odds are on your side.

  • Hi [@Zoelh]‍ Sabr is right, the odds are very very much on your side.x

    hi [@Sabr

I feel that you’re quite young too Hun so the odds are good for you too.

I’ve had some blood function tests come back high so they were repeated. Now they are just over the norm so I have to have them tested again in a week or so. I’m just about coming up to the time when I have my second colonoscopy. Today is the first day I’ve had some energy and I’ve been out in the garden, but because my employer ignored the GP fit to work note, I got so tired and was struggling to get through my shift so I took some stuff from the chemist to give me energy and my GP thinks that may have raised my blood function. I’m hoping that’s all it is.

I really wish you could have that sigmoidoscopy so that your mind is put at rest. They must feel that everything is okay though if they are not going to do it until February. Have they said why they won’t be doing it straight after the baby is born in December?x
