Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Oh I'm sorry that you have to wait around. Hope you get some idea what's going on. If you don't mind telling me what symptoms you are experiencing please. Do you get any indigestion or stomach ache etc

  • Hello , how are you? Bless you having to wait for a surgeon that rubbish , did they give you any indications on how long ? I have not heard anything from consultant , I need to chase it up really. I'm still feeling rubbish , started on my iron tablets so hopefully feel better soon .  I suppose I need to push for colonoscopy as I had positive fit test and have iron deficiency so it's likely I'm bleeding from somewhere just need to find out where and draw a line hopefully under this really difficult time .  Sorry to hear you are still feeling unwell . Take care xxx

  • Hi Kadash,

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. I can totally relate though, I really feel as if there is still something wrong with me. I had my ultrasound today and they found cysts on my ovaries so I'm quite concerned about these. I'm going to ring up my gp tomorrow to discuss this issue further xx

  • Hi Kadash,

How you're well, have you heard anything about your surgery yet? Xx

  • I have a fit test 16  and I'm freaking is it high ..I been not able to eat I'm constantly full can't go toilet as usual only once in the morning I don't get cramps but my stomach tighten up  I get this weird sensation up and bloated my it's been a month I'm dropping weight .my anxiety is so high I'm going mad .im still waiting for colonoscopy I'm just anxious it will get worst .

  • [@Kadash]‍ Today I went to the loo and I think the first part of my stool was like a maroon red and very bloody, sorry for the tmi, the rest of the stool was normal. I was panicking so bad, I don’t know what to do cause I don’t think they do colonoscopy when you’re pregnant.

  • Hi Sabr

This happened to me a week ago, I went the the toilet and most of my stools were a deep red colour and some were normal, and the toilet water was red also. I panicked so bad and went to a&e. The doctor tested it and told me it wasn't blood and asked me what I had eaten the night before. It then occurred to me I'd eaten a very very red, artificially coloured of course, butter chicken from a takeaway. I was extremely embarrassed hahaha.

Do you think it could have been something you have eaten?

    Kit xx

  • [@KitKat]‍ convinced I’m dying, I just know it was blood, sorry tmi but I investigated it. Some mucasy red around it and deep maroon stool. I had cherries two days ago but I’ve never had something like this happen before. I’ don’t understand why this first part of my stool was like that and not the rest.

  • If you are worried you can go to your a&e department and they will do some sort of tests. I had bloods taken to check my haemoglobin levels and I also had ultrasounds to see if anything was wrong. They may test your stool to see if it was deffo blood. Just know that soooo much can cause bloody stools, especially Crohn's and colitis. Try not to panic xx

  • 100 percent sure I don’t have Crohns or colitis just scared could be something more serious. :( I have hemorrhoids but I don’t think hemorrhoids make one part of your stool maroon for sure. I wanna go to the loo again just to check but I’ll have to wait till tomorrow as I only go once a day. Can’t help but freak out. Thank you for replying back KitKat means a lot.
