Cyst on tonsil

Hello, I'm a 28 year old female, I found a baked bean shaped and size cyst just above my toncil, I think I had either a virus or a bacterial infection which caused a cold and cough about a week before I noticed the cyst, although the cyst could have been there before I just didn't notice it, it's not painful and it's not causing me any symptoms apart from severe anxiety. No swollen glands or anything like that.

On a side note I'm very skinny and have lost my appetite the past few years, I'm always tired but to be honest that's nothing new I have felt fatigued my whole life I don't really have a history of sore throats or anything like that.

This may sound stupid but I have convinced myself that it's the worst thing because two different gps said they never seen anything like it before, they sent me away with a 5 day course of antibiotics which I have now finished and nothing has changed, and I have been referred onto a specialist, im just hoping someone here has had a cyst or something similar, and can put my mind at rest, my appointment isn't for 2 weeks and I'm completely obsessing over this.

Thanks for any help or information anyone can give me.

  • Hello, just as an update I was sent to the ENT,

he was was frustrated that I was sent to him and said its nothing to be worried about it's just one of those things I could have for ever or it may just disappear, it's basically a little cyst filled with mucus and i was told not to worry unless it starts growing and effects my breathing. Hope everyone eles in this thread is okay and thanks for all the lovely support. The specialist was pretty angry that the gp made such a fuss over it and scared me so much.

  • Hi lollipop,

I have somthing very similar. I am 23 and my left tonsil has gotten really swollen and I have a White spot on the tonsil. It is somthing within the tonsil.

I have been reffefed to ENT. I am sure it looks like cyst to me but GP was unsure. Could you describe what your cyst looked like?

  • This is brill they put you so at ease.

I went to the doctors yesterday. I have a white/pinkish lump on my tonsil.
Doctor told me he didn't think m it was anything sinister but to keep an eye on it over the next 2/4 weeks. He said it looks like a cyst. All the research I've don't no cysts look like this. How long have you had yours for? I was glj g to pay for a private appointment with an ENT but thinking now I may be being silly and I should just listen to what the doctor has told me

  • Hello,

I have had the same , when I swollen feels like something is stuck in my throat , it makes me gag a lot and am sick a lot, I see ent and they said was cysts but won't do anything because I'm pregnant, it isn't painful but call feel it all the time and is uncomfortable ! X

  • Hey, yeah I've had exactly the same thing, I've seen an ENT 4 times now, 3 times by going to A&E because I couldn't take how uncomfortable it was, if you can go to an ENT again, ask them if it could be your adenoids. That's what a specialist told me, that my adenoids were swollen and that was causing me to feel the lump in my throat, I've been on nose drops for a month and nose spray for the next month now and I can honestly say it is helping and the feeling of the lump is gone. I also believe that it is slightly in our heads because we wake up thinking we're still going to feel that lump so we do. But gradually try to forget about it. It's so hard because it's been through a lot to get it sorted but I promise you eventually it will just disapear !!

also just to note: the first ENT doctor told me it was a cyst but the second said it wasn't and just a little bit of extra skin attached! A cyst should be filled with puss and will need antibitoics so have they told you this?

    have a good day xx

  • I see two ent and they just said was cysts and wouldn't do anything while I'm pregnant and that was it really, it's hard because makes me gag and am sick a lot from it and then I feel that irritates it, it's hard x

  • hi can i ask, what procedures you had re:your tonicil cyst?

I have the same, mine was quite small when i saw the consultnt at the hospital, before lockdown...then it was agreed that i would have it lanced/drained...now after 4 appointments cancelled, it has grown a bit..i got an appointment for an MRI in december 2020 , now after  waiting ages for a reply, i rang the sec, for appoinment..only there now telephone appointments..I got a rather rude doctor, who told me it wouldnt be an optionnow to have it lanced/drained.. and said i needed to have it removed, alongside MY TONSILS!! .. I said i wasnt sure , i couldnt think !, he just came back with, ..you want it booked or not?''... Wow, bedside manner 0. PS the MRI showed nothing Sinister...Im scared stiff of having my tonsils out..im 68 and have heart/lung conditions, as well as having MCS, ( multiple chemical sensitivity ), so could have aan anaphlaxic shock with either, chemicals or Meds. how would i know what they give me, or what chemical cleaners have been used on instoments, which will go into my mouth!!. scared !. ... i wanted the cyst gone now though, as its causeing me to feel like i have a lump in my throat/horseness / scratchy throat , all on/off.

  • yes.. me..cpl weeks ago. .. firstly before lockdown i was told they would lance it and drain it..now, after waiting for further appoint during lockdown, it grew a little, then made me have a feeling of something stuck in throat for few days, and now horseness croacky voice..a little scratchy too.. Had a MRI in dec, told me nothing sinister, thankfully, but i now have to have a tonsilectomy as well as removing cyst.

I dont want tonsils out im too old i could have a hemourge/bleed..i hear its really painfull, for weeks after.. sounds dicey to me, scared stiff.. but they think its just as bad to drain it now.. HELP

  • Hi, I've had the same. Discovered the lump end of November. Referred straight away to ent. First had a camera through my nose and down my throat. Consultant said he thought it was a cyst and was sure it was nothing sinister, but would fast track me for an MRI. I had that within 2 weeks went back to consultant who again said it's a cyst on my right tonsil. He decided he would do a tonsillectomy and biopsy. He said I wasn't 100% out of the woods yet. I've never had tonsillitis or sore throat. But I've had a feeling of something stuck in my throats and my voice goes really horse.

two days ago I was admitted, they didn't take my tonsils out. He said that as soon as they started on the cyst, it burst, they cleared it all out, biopsy done and waiting for the results. My throat looks a mess, I think he must of done a lot of scraping and I'm suffering now.

but what I can't get out of my head is him saying "I wasn't 100% out of the woods yet"

  • Hi, I've found a round raised darker pink spot about 3mm on my left tonsil since having to do the lateral flow test and swabbing the back of my throat. I had to shine a torch to see what I was doing and noticed the lump. I've no idea how long it may have been there. First time I saw it I didn't think anything much of it - painless lumps and bumps sometimes appear inside my mouth and are gone within a day or two so I thought this would be the same. However it's still there 10 days later so now I'm starting to fret.  I've taken some photos to send to my GP. Needless to say I'm worried it could be tonsil cancer.

My friend knows an ENT doctor abroad and forwarded the photos to him. He came back with the reply that he believes it's a cyst. However I don't have any pain on swallowing or sore throat and haven't had a cold or cough for well over a year or more.

I have to wait till Thursday for a telephone consultation with my GP so will see if she's going to refer me. Next worry is how long I may have to wait to see an ENT consultant due to the aftermath of Covid. I'm thinking I will bite the bullet and see someone privately if I have to rather than spend weeks waiting and worrying.
