Waiting for Chest CT scan - Lung cancer ?

Hi - I am new to the forum and driving myself mad with worry. I ended up in A&E at the beginning of May due to a pain in my back and very high blood pressure. Sent home as all appeared fine but had a chest xray whilst there. GP called me 6 weeks later to say they had seen an opacity in the upper left area and wanted another Xray. I was not worried so went for another xray - the opacity was still there and radiographer mentioned ongoing changes. GP has scheduled a CT scan for 5th August but said she wasnt worried and it had not been requested urgently as they did not think it was cancer but they had to rule it out - she said the opacity must have been tiny as they hadnt even sized it ?? However, I am getting quite a few symptoms now - I have had a painful hip for months now which has gone into my mid-back area - more of a nagging ache than a pain and my shoulders are now aching and my neck area. I started with a sore throat around 3 weeks ago now which has developed into a cough - its like a tickle in the bottom of my throat. I am mostly spitting up white mucus but on 2 occasions this has included a tiny amount of brownish blood in it. My cough is worse on a morning and seems to settle a bit during the day but I have a vague pressure feeling in my chest. I have never smoked but do suffer with sinus problems and post nasal drip all of the time. I am googling everything to do with Lung Cancer and cannot stop thinking the worst. I suppose my question is whether anyone else has had these symptoms and is it right that an opacity would be very small on a chest xray for them not to size it ?? Any words of advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hope you get good news soon enough.

They've brought in forward.......to December, which is the best they can offer, apparently. There must be lots of people with lung issues.

Have a good weekend if possible and get some rest.

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • Hi Dave - just to let you know that I finally got my results today and good news. The shadow is arthritic changes and some broken ribs still reparing from a bad chest infection I had earlier in the year (I knew I was in pain but didnt realise I had actually broken some ribs !) My cough has cleared up and I think the blood must have been coming from my sinuses. I am still a little out of breath so going to see doctor about that but thank goodness its nothing sinister. I am having a glass of wine tonight to celebrate.

Thanks for your replies and concern & good luck with your futher treatment.

    Best wishes

    Ellen

  • Hi Ellen,

Brilliant stuff - I’ve very pleased at your good news.

I’m still blighted by this cough and I’ll be submitting a second sputum sample for testing as I don’t think I did the first one correctly (which came back as ‘satisfactory’).

It’s one of those rare occasions when you don’t want a satisfactory test result because the ideal scenario is to find a beatable bacteria that can be eradicated by antibiotics. A bacteria-free results suggests that they either missed something on my CT scan or that this is my new ‘bronchiectasis norm’ and I’ll have to get used to it.

Anyway, I’m glad you can take a sigh of relief and move on.

    Dave

  • I'm sure they won't have missed anything on the CT - I think its probably some evasive bacteria somewhere. I am still breathless and have awful back pain and pain under my ribs so I am off back to docs. Thinking I'm just getting old !

Good luck with it all but I'm positive the CT would have shown up something really nasty.

    Ellen :)
