Shadow on lung

Anyone had similar experience, my mum has an urgent referral to hospital yesterday for an X-ray due to a decline over many months, weight loss (bmi 14) extreme fatigue, chronic cough and overall unwell feeling.  The X-ray showed up a shadow so she then went for a CT scan today, that came back as a cavity which needs further investigation, so she has now been fast tracked for a PET scan, I’m really really worried, hers bloods came back fine and CT scan shows no theft areas of body with anything to worry about, please someone tell me I’m worrying unnecessarily, I have to add she does still smoke and has done for almost 50 years.

  • Hi Nikkiniks

i came across this post as I was searching for answers. My husbands initial symptoms were right shoulder pain and due to that he had a chest X-ray as he is a heavy smoker. Today he has been referred for a ct scan as they have spotted a shadow on his lungs. I am absolutely terrified of what the result could be. Just wondering, what was your mums tests results? I hope she's ok.

  • Hi lovely

My mums shadow she had never did really ever reach a conclusion.  She had an endoscopy and they found no cancerous cells.  She was given antibiotics and then flew home to Spain.  She still has trouble with her breathing and has an inhaler and getting older and frailer but other than that she is fine.  Please try not to think the worst as 9 times out of 10 it isn't something sinister.  There are loads of things a shadow on the lung could be and it's not always cancer.  Please let me know and keep in touch, i would love to be here to support you xx Nikki xx

  • Thank you so much, that's very reassuring to know and glad to hear it wasnt cancer. At the moment, I feel like everything for me has come to a standstill and my life  just revolves around this whole scan that's yet to be confirmed. As I mentioned, he is a heavy smoker and I've always felt that one day we will get this kind of news and just feel like my worst fears could become reality. Absolutely terrified but I realise it's going to be a difficult few weeks till we find out and then, who knows. But thank you for the update, it's a small reassurance for me.

  • Hi Nikkiniks,

how's your husband? I so hope the outcome was good.

  • Hi

Thankfully it's not the C word. The relief when we got the result was something else but so glad it's all over now. The whole process after initial x ray was so quick. The ct scan and then results all done in the space of a week so can't thank our GP enough for pushing this through so fast. Thanks for asking x
