Lump in neck, gp not concerned

ive had a lump in my neck, right side, for about 5-6 weeks. Well thats when i noticed it. I booked an app with gp, ended up with a trainee gp who said lymph gland it should go down and booked me blood tests for 2 weeks. Blood test came back normal apart from raised platelets. Gp advised retake blood tests in 4 weeks. The lump is bigger than a pea but not grape size and hard doesnt move and is deffinately not a swollen gland. Its not painfull. Im not ill generally fit and well but a little overweight. Ive had an audible wheeze for a couple of weeks and sore throat maybe abit tired although i do have 2 children 1 im sure is the devil recarnated :D and 1 asd, so this could be why im tired. Im petrified something sinister is going on and my gp thinks im a paranoid patient talking to me like im irrational at having to wait four weeks for a blood test then further waiting for an ultrasound.

Can you guys tell me what your first symptoms were and the pathway to diagnoses or all clear.

Im not sure to just ride it out and wait or insist on faster test/ultrasound.

thanks for reading and hope you all are well

  • Hi can I jump onto this post. I have a lump right side of neck. No pain, no fever, not red. I am having night sweats but already gone through menopause.  Age 61. Been going about the sweats past 1yrs. Put me on some medication worked for while.

Ok lump its easily 2 1/2" across. When i turn my head you can clearly see it. I done know how long it's been there. It just so happened 3 wks ago I was just touching my neck and asked my husband to see if he could feel any difference from other side. His rely.i can see it. Now I had noticed my face and neck seemed to be getting more round. Now in past days when swollening food I can feel slight pressure inside.

Spoke to nurse 3 wks ago on phone. Oh it's infection its nothing. Last week spoke with Dr he was concerned to me I need to be seen by nurse today.

She said its the same as other side. Told her totally disagree. I said look when I turn people can see it oh yes I see it. Blood test tomorrow morning. Seems I have to fight for this to be sorted. Oh I do have under active thyroid but medication.

  • I have had lump in my neck for years been to the gp several times and told nothing to worry about necks are lumpy. During quarantine it's got a lot bigger went saw new gp who said yes need to get looked at, had scan, needle biopsy (inconclusive) so that said would need to remove to test properly. Just got results and from my understanding as it wa a difficult on the phone it was blood clots and that's it nothing else is happening. Not sure how I feel about it being blood clots and told now there's nothing to worry about but it wasn't cancer (as I self diagnosed myself with google)! Hope helps that not always cancer x

  • Hi Sam3

funny u should mention blood clots (well not actually funny lol) but I was diagnosed with essential thrombosis prior to the lump being located, which means my blood is too thick, and clots. I have to take a blood thinner everyday which has ruined my once beautiful skin. Since lockdown I have been having swelling in the lymph node, I think maybe I've just had more time to notice it, I also noticed a ulcer type patch in my mouth, showed it to my GP, had the normal 2 week checks once again searching for a cancer, it came back I have a periapcial mass that is possibly benign and they will give me 4 root canals and if it doesn't work they will biopsy it.
I don't think it's anything sinister but the whole system makes you paranoid. I've had 3 urgent referals in the last year all testing for cancer. Then they use words like likely and if this doesn't work then we'll biopsy it, why not just do it first to make sure. Everything is a fight with our NHS and it seems like testing is done backwards lol, glad it wasn't cancer for you but still worrying knowing you had a time bomb that could go off at anytime x

  • Hello [@Farah1]‍

I discovered a hard lump in my neck two years ago just under my jaw when I was 19. I first had an ultrasound which they said was normal (bean shape apparently). After getting repeated infections (turns out this was just an allergic reaction to citrus fruit) I was send back three months later for a needle biopsy, this came back inconclusive. I then had surgical biopsy which came back negative. I was told this was probably just an infected lymph node or something. Two years on the lump is still there I've recently found out it has been there since 2015 after it was discovered on an MRI scan this year and backdated to my scan in 2015 for another medical thing (it's grown 1cm in 5 years) some of it may be scar tissue. I worried as I've found it shows on scans before and after but they said it's okay. I'm now being sent for some more check ups as I asked my GP what exactly it is. She told my it's very likely to be a hard benign lump as it's grown so little over 5 years and caused no symptoms. Fingers crossed my new investigation will go well and fill you with confidence that a benign lump can be hard.

  • Thank you for posting. Found a lump on left side of neck a few days ago. Going for bloods but been convincing myself the worst. 17 years old its scary

  • It's always scary finding lumps even more so

wnen you Google it I'm now 21 and still google every little detail (hypochondriac) but honestly I was seen by ear nose and throat & they felt about on the lump and made me move all sorts of ways and told me eveything seemed fine nothing was worrying they said it's very common in the younger age group to pass colds and flus to each other constantly and if I was to stop touching it all the time it would decrease in size as I did touch it religiously and still do I questioned if it ever would fully go away to which she replied that it might it might not it just depends don't get me wrong I do wish I questioned it further now looking back and maybe asked if more could be done to settle my mind as it still runs away with me at times thinking what if but bloods ect came back normal have had them done since and still normal please don't worry as I said it's a scary thing googling symptoms but it's not always a scary outcome please let me know how u get on !!

  • Hello,

I know you wrote this ages ago but I was just reading a me and you sound familiar. I recently found a lump on my neck and have since been freaking out about it, I have no other symptoms and I'm a relatively healthy 17 year old. I only noticed it when I was working out. My step dad thinks it's just an injury caused by my exercise and my step sister who works as a radiologist doesn't think it's anything to worry about but I'm really scared. How did you stop yourself from worrying

  • Hey Liv

at the start when I found it I didn't really worry but as I started to google it I seen lots of these forms ect and they just made my anxiety 200x worse specially being 18 years of age I was really scared but after I got my bloods done & have had them again there normal & with getting it checked out it put my mind to ease a lot as I said in my last post the ears nose and throat nurse said it's common in young people as young people pass around infections if you've recently been under the weather aswell it could just be your body fighting off the infection I have no other symptoms ect and am are healthy but with any lump it's good to get it checked out so defo see your doctor and that might calm your nerves I think I'm generally knowing it's there it causes me still a bit of anxiety thinking what if this and what if that but sometimes I just remind myself that Iv had eveytbing checked out and I'm fine I used to touch it all the time to make sure it was gone or if it was still there but honestly noticed a bit difference in just leaving it be it actually shrunk in size but I would recommend getting checked out just to be on the safe side and know you have gone to the doctor just let them know your a little worried aswell I'm sure they'll put you to ease !!

  • Hello

Since December I've been struggling really bad with my anxiety. And I've just now been starting to get better however, I don't think my mind understands that and now feels as though it needs to find something to worry about... which it has. I feel as though I've always had this in my neck but it's just now becoming an issue because I was searching for something to worry about, if that makes sense. I'm going to uni in September and life seems to good to be true lol. Last night I took an anti inflammatory and it did go down however, I can't stop touching it which makes it ache, did yours feel like this? X

  • so late to the party but i found a lump ontop of my collarbone it's under my skin, i had gone to my GP but he said i pulled a muscle and he couldn't feel anything but i can feel this lump on my neck it's at the other side but the next side is more pushed out i'm so scared even though the doctor told me that.
