Are ultrasounds enough to catch breast cancer

Hello,

I am a 25 yr old woman in UK and I have had three scans for different breast lumps since I was 19. Only had an ultrasound each time and it always came back fine.

I found a new lump this month (always same breast) and have another ultrasound booked this week.

My question is - if ultrasound is clear am I safe? Or should I insist on an MRI or something? I found scary stories online of ultrasound missing cancer but all seemed to be in the US ...

I am very anxious and afraid :( any answers appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Amy

    Hi Holiday,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear of your experience, but thank you for highlighting it. You are right that younger people especially, often have to stick to their guns to get the right tests.

I am glad to hear that you did and I sincerely hope that all goes well for you from here on. Please keep in touch. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

Some of the above posts are reassuring and some not with my situation and I'm not sure what to do!

Im a 24 year old girl with huge health anxiety and im struggling as I find one thing after another. Last Christmas I found two lumps in my left breast, I have large breas and was unsure if they were always there, I had a consultation with a breast specialist and he said it was nothing serious more than likely tissue that's just lumpier and harder than the rest or little 'breast mouses', followed by  an ultrasound that showed nothing but normal tissue, she just said it's fatty build ups. I was delighted! These lumps are in the left outer area of my breast quite close to the skin that both the doctors and radiologists could feel so I knew the ultrasound would have a good chance of picking something up as it wasn't deep. Follow on 10 months of panicking about several issues I came across an extremely large lump in my right breast yesterday, rounded but almost feels as if it's disc shape. I am 80% sure that it was never there, it feels like the two lumps I had an ultrasound on last year, but just much much larger and feels tender. This also might be from all the prodding!!

Is it possible for other hard fat clumps to appear in the breast and be nothing, has anyone else had this issue or any advice what to do? Please help!

    Thanks so so much.

    Hi Eva,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am not a doctor, yet, I can understand your concern, when you feel that your breast lumps have grown considerably since last year. Chances are that this is a simple benign cyst, or more fatty build up. At your age, it is unlikely, although not impossible, to be breast cancer. Breast cancer is not usually painful, unless we become over-zealous with feeling them. Most cancerous lumps have a jagged outline and feel fixed.

Our breasts can all change with time and, we are advised to get any change investigated. It would therefore be wise to contact your GP again, just for your own peace of mind. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Here's hoping that nothing untoward is found.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
