Pain in left breast on upper left side towards armpit

Hey all,

Over a month ago I noticed that my breast was really sore on the left side toward my armpit. I didn't think much of it first as I have lupus so I seem to always have aches and pains. But one day I was feeling it and I noticed that there seemed to be a lot more "tissue" in that area (if that makes sense?) than on the other side. It seems to only have gotten more sore the longer I've waited for answers. I've beent to the doctor a few times and to be quite honest I am just not impressed with Ireland's healthcare (ther is a bad rep for women's healthcare here). First doctor told me that he could not feel anything in my breast unusual at all, while poking around in the very painful area and clearly seeing me in pain. He said it was probably just an inflammation of chest wall, which seemed ridiculous to me as I can feel that it does not seem like it is in my chest wall. I told him I feel lumpiness but he wouldn't listen.

Second (female) doctor told me that she could feel no cancerous lump but that it seems to be glandular - indicating she could feel something there but not a lump necessarily. She agrees with me that it is in my breast, however, so referred me to a breast clinic which she says could take 6-8 weeks to hear back from.

I'm really worried as it is so sore and I can very clearly feel something there. Then I was reading about Inflammatory Breast Cancer and how it doesn't usually present with a lump and spreads rapidly and is virtually incurable and now I've seriously freaked myself out and feel that I get zero answers from doctors here.

I was told even after the breast check they will most likely just prescribe me evening primrose oil and tell me to come back if it doesn't go away - this seems insane! What if it is cancerous? Surely that is too much waiting!

I have never had soreness in my breast before in my life. I am 29 years old and surely if it was hormonal or something I would have experienced something similar by now?

I'm really worried. Any advice would help greatly!

  • I ended up having a scan and was told there was a slightly enlarged lymph node right next to my implant. The thing is, I am never unwell. I honestly have not even had so much as a slight cold in years, let alone an infection that would cause lymph nodes to swell to the point of being painful. I read that you should worry when your lymph nodes are enlarged with no apparent cause and that they will enlarge around the site of the problem but when you have not been unwell then you should consult a doctor. So I went back and he said I had probably just bruised it, but I know I haven't. And that contradicts the lymph node being enlarged.

The pain is still there although it is slightly less acute. What has now happened though is that both of my breasts are now tender all of the time to the point that I can no longer sleep on my front because it hurts too much. It is very much like hormonal breast pain but I haven't experienced that in years because I have had an IUD fitted for around 8 years and don't get periods or any of the associated symptoms. So I just don't know what is going on. My doctor is telling me I am not unwell and am worrying about nothing so I feel I can't pursue it anymore :(

  • I am 63 and have felt aching in my left breast for well over a year.I have been fobbed off by 2 different doctors,as there is nothing to feel, even when I feel tender spots.I haven’t worried too much,as it’s not a pain, but a constant heavy aching feeling, and can’t decide if it’s my breast, heart,or muscle pain, but it’s not going to go away, and may be gradually getting worse, been around so long,it’s hard to tell! I missed breast screening,as I am on an island, and doctor refused to refer me to mainland hospital,as they would need to pay ferry ect,and I can’t afford to go. Reading the comments from others,I wonder if there is any point in going to GP again,as there is nothing to see.I haven’t worn a bra for couple years, just the soft over the head “versions” and know I thought it was the bra making me feel so uncomfortable, and can’t wear one now.Hormones are mentioned in the threads, but that wouldn’t be my problem at 63- Just wish I could get reassurance at exactly what can cause the constant aching.

  • Hi, just wondering if you have had any luck with this pain, just had my second baby 3 months ago and 4 weeks ago I stared getting pain around my left breast originally it was close to my heart and I had an ecg done, I've now noticed it's spread across my entire left chest and different areas hurt every day, some times it feels likes it's my ribs I can touch a rib and it hurts or the centre of my chest where the ribs meet the breast bone that can hurt if presses, occasionally it runs around under my arm to my back, been told like you it's probably muscular but also like you it's really affecting my anxiety so much so I've had a panick attack recently, been back and forth to the doctors but not getting anywhere, I keep checking my breast but can't feel anything unusual, the nurse at my go practice done a breast exam and she said she didn't feel anything either, just feel so fed up now, there's pain everyday that literally moves around my breast/chest and round to my back sometimes just an ache sometimes it's sharp and stabby.

  • Hi can u tell me how did u get in wit this because I have the same  pain or you and haveing be to anny  doctors  please

  • Hi,

My doctor referred me to the breast clinic at the hospital. I was examine and had a mammogram. Thankfully it was all fine. Always best to get it checked out and the mammogram doesn't hurt at all.

  • Hi

I had same problem last year. My left breast was swollen and the pain in my armpit/ side of breast horrendous. Got referred to the breast clinic and had ultra sound. Ends up I have fibroadeoma which is cysts in the breast which are hormonal. They can get bigger which they would then remove but as I was only 28 they said I was still too young. Mines comes and go when at the sorest.

hope this helps some people may be that this is the case?

  • Hi @sophsw, I have the same problem and I am the same age as you. Did your left breast feel particularly heavier and sore in one particular spot? I have got a doctors appointment next week (video with everything that is going on) but I'm really concerned.

  • Yes I was more on the outside of my left breast. It is uncomfortable to lay on that side whilst sleeping when at its sorest. Wearing a bra can rub it also.

Hopefully they help on the video chat as I imagine it would be difficult to see on this what they are looking at. My doctor examined me and felt right away how swollen and lumpy it was.
