Left side back pain and stomach pain with intense cramps

Hi

I'm looking for some reassurance please, I have been experiencing constant pain/ache in the left side of my lower to middle back going round into my stomach. This has been like this for the last 2 & 1/2 months, I'm woke up everyday in the early hours between 2am & 6am with a sharp instnse pain in the same area that I can only describe as like a spasm as any slight movement, coughing, heavy breathing causes this pain to feel like a stabbing pain that quite literaly takes my breath away, this usually passes if i get up and go sit still for a few hours and then I am left with the usual constant pain/ache.

I have been to my GP twice already and he has sent me to out local A & E and requested that they investigate, as the first time round the A & E doctor laughed at me & said 'he didn't know why my GP sent me, as It was only a UTI & sent me home with anitbitoics. I went back a second time as per my GP and they did a CT scan as my GP thought it could be a kidney stone, but no stone was found. I have had two blood test's taken & a CT scan at A & E and was sent home after being told it's just a back ache!

In1997/1998 when I was 26 I had a Chrondosarcoma removed from my left femur and was discharged from the hospital only a few years ago. Becuase of this I can't get rid of this nagging doubt in my mind that I might have something serious going on in my back. As I was initially told that the pain in my leg back in 1997 was Sciatica, so I can't help but feel doubtful of the medical profession, especially as only last year my mother was told that she only had a blood clot in her kidney to then be told 7months later that it was a tumour before they removed her kidney! I am waiting to go back again & see my GP but i feel like a nuiscance and a timewaster.

I am living on painkillers, paying out for massages and I am just so tired from the constant broken sleep.

Please I am desperate to get rid of this constant pain/ache and get a full nights unbroken sleep any helpful advice is much appreciated.

13th Jan 2020 UPDATE

Thank you everyone for your replies and I hope that all of you are not suffering anymore pain and have found out the cause of your pain.
i just wanted to give an update on my circumstances and that I still haven't received a formal diagnosis but I have had numerous tests done and the doctors have been investigating me for a possible inflammatory Bowel disease such as Crohns Disease or Ulcerative Colitis as one of the tests revealed ulcers and my bloods showed that something is raised (sorry can't remember what though) and that there's inflammation plus that I was anemic and deficient in Iron. I do still have pain but it is not excruciating it's more uncomfortable and I am sleeping much better but unfortunately because of the impact of covid I am still waiting for a formal diagnosis.  I wish you all well x

March 2021 UPDATE 2

I have now formally been diagnosed with Crohn's disease & fibromyalgia so at long last over 2 years later I know what is wrong with me ! I still have a constant pain and have been on multiple courses of steroids to try & put this flare up into remission but no such luck yet. The pain is manageable and is more of just a very uncomfortable pain and at least the intense cramping pain has gone (felt like a contraction in labour pain) I hope everyone that has commented has now had there problems resolved or at least treated, thank you for your comments and I wish you all well. Unfortunately my story continues as there's now a gynaecological issue going on to but thats another story.

  • I sympathise with u it's so scary having pain and not knowing why it's happening or how bad it will get try to stay positive because there's so many things it could be that's not cancer I'd think it's likely either reproductive organ related or something like endometriosis ( do u get painful periods, contraction type pains, leg pain, back pain l, pelvic pressure, heavy periods, spotting in between periods etc) or bowel related obvs I'm not a dr I've just done so much research because I wasn't getting taken seriously of the dr it really is by chance that I found out I have endometriosis the only way to know is through a laparoscopy for that but a ultrasound would show up things like fibroids/polyps and cysts x

  • My periods mostly come late they usually come after 4 weeks but they are usually heavy and last for 7 days and I do have pain for about an hour like really bad cramps last time I had my period I vomited and I usually don't vomit on my period. Also before I got my period I had like brown dishcharge and then my period came. I'm waiting for it to come now and I'm scared the pain will be worse because of the pain that I've been having now. I once got this pain before but near my belly and I couldn't breathe but it only lasted for an hour but now I have this on going pain for basically 2 weeks now. I don't have any leg pain or anything it's only on the left side of my stomach it hurts a little bit down but my lower back on the left side started to hurt as well which i don't know why it just came out of no where. One of the doctors laughed at me and said what else can we do you had a ultrasound done and it showed nothing but I said so where is the pain coming from. He told me to go to a sexual health clinic but I don't think I have a sti I don't have any symptoms of it and my discharge doesn't smell and it's always been like a yellowish light colour but this pain came out of no where. I mean I think I need to get more scans done but I think they think I have a bad urine infection but the antibiotics should of been helping by now so where is this pain coming from. I don't think th doctors know what it is and they can't treat me like a animal and send me home with antibiotics and so many painkillers because let me tell you I'm surprised I haven't overdosed because I take so many pain killers because I just don't want this pain. I don't have it now but I don't know when it will come but when it comes I try to breathe in and out and not focus on the pain but it's really hard. But I get stressed too but I don't know if it's coz of the stress because I used to get anxiety but the pain would go away it just would be butterflies in my stomach. But the pills made me no poo for three days so I had to take this syrup for me to poo but the pain still came. I mean I don't know what to do

  • I always thought I have something wrong then go to drs they know what's wrong and treat u but it's actually let's try this this and this see what works and what doesn't it's really frustrating periods shouldn't be so painful that your being sick so I'd mention that to your dr hot water bottles helped me so much with the pain and deep breaths when the pain got really bad when u panic it makes your muscles tense and makes the pain worse I get anxiety so it's hard to not panic but it's better if u can keep as calm as possible keep at the drs until u get answers though it took over a year for me to find out what was wrong and I'm not sure if there's other things going on with me but at least I know I have a diagnosis now no one should have to live in pain especially for a long time if it is bowel pain things like peppermint oil tablets help with gas and lying on your left side to help get the gas out also think about your diet u could have an intolerance or something obviously keep at the drs but if u can fry self help stuff u might find some relief or improvements of your symptoms x

  • Thank you I will see what the doctor will tell me today because I have also coursework to do but I can't do it properly because of the pain but we will see what he will tell me today. If I get the pain today I will try and keep calm and not think about it and if it comes I'll just walk around and try to breathe in and out and not panic too much because it does make it worse.

  • Good luck hope u get it sorted hun x

  • Did you get an answer? I've been unwell now for months and off work, it started off with UTI as I was persistent going to the doctors as they first mis diagnosed it as anxiety (I have anxiety but knew it wasn't that) anyway I went to A+E one night with extreme pain and was told UTI had cleared up, my bloods, urine and sats were fine but that it could be renal colic due to a stone, this was a week ago I'm still waiting for a ct scan date. Since then I've started to have intense stabbing pains in back and stomach/chest. Just fed up I've been on so many antibiotics and painkillers but nothing is helping :(

  • Hi,

I have been having severe lower left back and side pain, with a bloated stomach and constipation for 6 months now.  I feel like my bowel doesn't empty properly.  I was given antibiotics in September 2020 for a possible water infection,  diagnosed over the phone due to Covid, there was no improvement.  After pestering GP who just kept saying it will be irritable bowel syndrome, I have finally  now had a colonoscopy,  endoscopy and yesterday a CT scan with dye.  The pain gets much worse after food, but is there constantly. It is debilitating and exhausting.  Pain killers have no effect at all. To say I'm very worried would be an understatement.  Results due next week.

  • Hi I have just been searching the Internet for some possible answers when I came across this discussion. I have been experiencing the same issues. For 3 months now I have been waking every night in agony with back pain. It happens numerous time in the night, where I wake and can't move it is so painful ( feels like I'm in labour). I have been to the gp who referred me to the musculoskeletal doctor and ordered xrays and blood tests which all came back normal. I have now seen the musculoskeletal doctor who ordered me to have an mri, they mri scanned my lumbar spine instead of doing the thoracic spine so no closer to finding what it could be. I have now got a mri on my thoracic spine boomed for next Sunday! I have been given all sorts of pain killers which have no effect what so ever!! I also had a kidney infection last week which wasn't helping matters but that's all cleared up now. I just can't wait to find out what could be causing me to wake up in so much pain. I have no pain in the day only the odd ache/twinge which I can cope with. Once I'm up within an hour/hour an half the major pain has gone. Thanks for reading this, if anyone has any idea what it could be I'd be grateful

  • Was diagnosed with IBS years ago, but it's never been a serious issue. These symptoms came from nowhere in the middle of the night 3days ago. I had Buscopan handy and took a couple, and now on 4 a day to try keep it at bay but to no avail during night, especially the lower left back.

    Tried getting appointment with Doc - - - - - lol

I'll be knocking on their door if this ain't gone by next week.

  • Thanks for updating us :) glad you've finally found out what it is xx
