Breast clinic- results on the day?

I have my first appointment at the breast clinic tomorrow after being referred by the GP.

Is anyone able to tell me how much I will know when I leave the appointment tomorrow?

Can they tell straight away if something is sinister?

  • Oh that’s good news Emrich x

  • HollyBerry13 I know this post was from last year, I'm curious to how you got on? Did you get all information on the day etc? I really hope it was good news for you and you are ok?

i went to my GP yesterday about breast pain and she could feel a lump and had referred me to the hospital she said I'll be seen within 2 weeks and I'm already panicking.

    Hi Khort,

Welcome to our forum. I am replying to you, as this is an old thread and, I don't know whether the contributors to it are still using the site. I am sorry to hear about your lump, but glad to hear that you have been referred to the breast clinic.

You should be seen within 2 weeks, but please don't expect any results on the day. At your first appointment you will see your consultant and will discuss your symptoms. Your breasts will then be examined. You will then be sent for a mammogram/ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. You will normally have to wait 1-2 weeks after that to get the results of these tests and, this is when you should get your diagnosis.

I expect that you are already extremely worried and thinking the worst - we all do this, but fortunately it seldom turns out to be the case. On rare occasions, where the consultant is pretty sure that it is or is not cancer, you may be told that on the day, but they are usually reluctant to say anything until the results are back. By the time you return for these, your consultant will already have discussed your case with his/her multidisciplinary team (MTD) and have decided what treatment you need, if in fact, you need any.

Of all the people referred to the breast clinic, only 1 person in 8 will turn out to have cancer, so I hope that you are one of the lucky people.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

can I ask what your symptoms were if you didn't think you had any lumps?

  • Hi - my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer at her first appointment (she had a full response to treatment) 2 years ago and at present is fine. She had an ultrasound and the lady doing it said the lump looked sinister and she also had a needle biopsy. I seem to remember she was told that most people referred - it turns out not to be cancer but when it is cancer - they can often tell from the mamogram (my mum's was picked up on her routine mamogram). She waited a week for the definite diagnosis but was referred to the cancer unit straight away - my mum said the 2 days between getting her recall letter and being told she very likely had cancer was worse than actually being told she had. Hers was stage 3 and triple negative which is harder to treat but her response to treatment couldn't have gone better.

  • I am waiting on results of biopsy I got taken on18th as got told I my results might not be in on time for the Monday review where people plan next steps and today 31/5/21 is second week

Consultant told me to phone on 14th day if haven't heard by phone or letter so going to phone in morning as longer going on nevres kick still trying to think its benign (Hopefully) or maybe they not going to call/letter as everything OK has that happened to anyone

    Hi Puggsy,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

It is always stressful waiting for results. With today being the holiday, you may find that there was no MDT meeting today, although I hope that there was for your sake. You will usually be contacted by phone or letter irrespective of the outcome. The only time that I have heard of when people haven't got results, is when they've been lost - Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often.

I sincerely hope that you are right and that it is benign. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
