Bowel gurgling

I’ve had alternating diarrhoea and constipation for the past 25 days. Started out as nothing but diarrhoea for the intitial 7 days and then trended towards constipation. I’m scheduled for a colonoscopy in 4 days, so I’m not looking for medical advice, just anyone with a similar experience or information. One thing that has been a constant throughout this ordeal are loud bowel noises (gurgling, whining, etc) that seem to be most active late-night into the early morning. It’s still happening during the day but seems to be hyperactive during these overnight hours. Has anyone experienced this and if so what was the resolution? Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi. First up, have a glass of red wine and relax. I worked myself up about it. I had numerous tests privately. Scopes, scans, cameras, breath tests, blood tests you name it. 2 things happened, 1. I had a poo that was like a black golf ball with mucous and blood on it and things got a lot better. I think it was a blockage that they couldn't see on the scans as it would have looked just like the other poo. I think this was causing slow or restricted passage and it was basically fermenting.

    2. I found out I had an anal fissure. This could have been harbouring bacteria and maybe causing issues, I am not sure. After surgery other issues in that area eventually cleared up and all was well.

I think the blockage was the cause. It was a horrible time but it will get better.

  • Hi Chris,

If im honest im more worried now haha, as i was hoping that it cleared up without anything and i have been thinking it may be crohns etc. How long did it take for this golf ball thing to pass ? You said in a previous post that it took 3.5 months to go away so im guessing it came back ? Also what symptoms did you have to realise you had a fissure ? I really appreciate you taking to me about this as im losing my mind and scared for my future.

  • It took months. And if you had a fistula (I meant fistula previously) then you will probably know as you would have pain.. But look, everyone is different. When I look back now I had a lot of stress on in my life, I mean a lot. Enough to break most people, and I think my body reacted by making my stomach churn and gurgle. It was really bad but it did go away when the stress went away too. I bet you have lots to worry about or playing on your mind. Try to relax. When you do I bet the gurgling goes away. Ipeople say they have butterflies in their stomach when they are nervous, it's your digestion going OTT basically. The things I said in my earlier post still apply but looking back now, the stress was most probably the biggest contributor. Put some headphones and music on, lie on the bed and chill. Deep breathing. Guided breathing. Relax. I bet it gets better.

  • Really appreciate you responding. Ill try and take some of this on board and hope for the best. I am really struggling with this popping/sensation its there from the moment i wake up and scared for my future.

  • Hi there,

Did you ever get these noises to go away ? Its driving me insane im so scared for the future.

  • Hi,

Not as such. Some things seem to exacerbate it a bit - like gluten based products but there isn't really much of a pattern. One thing that does help are mint oil capsules that release in your gut. They act as a relaxant and certainly improve things. I take these when it feels quite agitated and they are very cheap to buy ( don't get them on a prescription).

I do think suggestions in the thread about relaxation are important if other issues have been ruled out. I read a book that stated how closely linked our gut is to the nervous system and mind.  There are videos on YouTube to calm the digestive system through music / sounds  and it is worth trying them too..

  • I just noticed you said after your colonoscopy that it took a few days to ease so im guessing it came back ? I feel like when my food is digesting is when it is at its worst is like gas bubbles popping which i can here is this the same for you ? Do you plan on having anymore test to figure out what is going on or are you deciding to just live with it ?

  • It can be unsettled after eating or just come on sometimes when l haven't eaten. After the colonoscopy it was still there.

I haven't had any further tests. There could be bacterial issues in my gut but so long as there is no pain then l try not to stress about it if l know there is nothing untoward developing.  I didn't follow up with the GP as they didn't dectect anything so that was pretty much it - as it is hard getting appointments.

  • Are you symptoms the same as mine ? Gurgling & Popping sensations ? & what tests did you have done all together m, Sorry for all the questions just finding life really hard atm.

  • Gurgling sounds and l guess something like a popping sound - although difficult to describe. Just a sensation of gut churning.

In addition to developing stomach noises l went through a spell of unsettled bowl issues - either loose or constipated and excess wind. This triggered a fit test on the stool to check for blood and they also ran some blood tests - all of which came back negative. But as the issue persisted l went back to my GP and they then referred me for the colonoscopy which came back negative. There was pretty much nothing left to test after that.
