Breast lump with dull arm ache... is this normal?

Hi everyone,

This forum has been really helpful to me from finding a lump to having my appointment and needle biopsy. My question that i have that I can’t seem to find an answer to is, has anyone else experienced a horrible dull ache in the arm that is the same side as the lump? This has been happening more over the last two weeks and I also get the same dull ache in my lower leg on the same side. Also (probably has nothing to do with it) but a weak feeling and heavy feeling at the back/base of my head. I’m trying not to look too much into it but as its all the same side as the lump, I’m starting to panic. They said biopsy results should be 2-3 weeks. Will I find out sooner if it’s not good news? I’m 37 with 3 children and am finding it hard to act normal and not show I’m panicked about something x

  • i personally would sit them down and tell them once you have the result, even if its nothing serious, and say to them always be open with you about it, if they are ever worried about any lumps or changes come to you straight away, its better then leaving it, i know what you mean about worry, kids do worry and over think, no matter what the result is, i would have that conversation with them especially why they are all girls to, they may experience lumps/cysts, changes in years to come and not speak out about it, so its good to know your there and they can tell you anything

    Hi Usher,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms, but I am glad to hear that you are getting them checked out. It is unusual for breast pain to accompany breast cancer. If it does, it is more usually in the breast or under the arm. I am not a doctor, but I haven't heard anyone complaining of an associated sore elbow in the 12 years that I have been on this site.

Have you got a date for your mammogram yet? I do hope that you don't have too long to wait, as the waiting period is always an anxious time. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

I am just here for a bit of advice really, I have had an ache under my right armpit and into my breast for a few weeks now. I put it down to wearing the wrong size bra as I have a 10 month old baby and my boobs are not the size they used to be! But I went to the GP and she examined me and said she could feel a lump in my breast on the outer bit of my tissue. I've been referred to the breast clinic but I am terrified. I have no family history of breast cancer but I just keep looking and my baby girl and the thought of me being ill so young in her life scares me to death :(

praying to god it's nothing serious but found myself here after promising myself I wouldn't google it . So glad to hear that people with something similar have gone on to find out it's nothing serious.

    Hi Becky,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms, but try not to worry. Not all lumps are cancerous. Many tend to be benign cysts or fibrous changes. Did you breast or bottle feed your baby daughter?

I am glad to hear that you are trying to steer clear of google, as this only serves to heighten your anxiety further and doesn't give you any helpful answers.

I was in your position 12 years ago and did receive a cancer diagnosis. I had lost my mum to breast cancer, so was absolutely terrified. I had two young teenage children at the time and was really concerned that I might never see them grow up. Since then I have had a second bout of breast cancer the following year . I have now been fortunate enough to see the children leave school, go to university, graduate, find gainful employment, marry and have a family of their own. I still live a busy and fulfilled life.

Breast cancer is one of the most treatable form of cancer nowdays. It is also a fact that only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis. You do not say what age you are, but the younger you are, the less likely you are to develop breast cancer.  You should usually be seen at the breast clinic within 2 weeks, although this can take a little longer in some areas, due to Covid.

I sincerely hope that all turns out well for you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on, In the meantime try to tell yourself that 'it isn't cancer until you're told it's cancer.' Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you so much for your lovely response, I didn't breast feed my baby? I have also just turned 30. I know they say the younger you are the better your chances but I've convinced myself I am that 1 in 8. I'm so sorry you had to go through the passing of your mum and then having the disease yourself. I'm so glad you live a happy and fulfilled life.
I have my appointment for the NHS on the 9th November, I also have one booked with private medical insurance through my employer on the 10th but unsure which to chose.

    thank you again

    Hi Becky,

If it's of any consolation to you, most of us think the worst while we are waiting, but fortunately this seldom seems to happen. I am glad to hear that you don't have too long to wait.

You will probably find that the private surgeon you see, also works in the NHS. I certainly found this. When I was first diagnosed, I discovered another lump soon after, my surgeon refused to scan it and we had a Mexican stand-off for 11 months. He wanted me to have radiotherapy, but I refused, on the basis that there was no point in treating one breast, whilst ignoring the other.

At this stage, I had decided to go private for a second opinion. I did my research on private surgeons in my area and decided who I was going to consult. Before I put this in motion, my original surgeon referred me to see the surgeon who was in charge of the surgeons in my area. Much to my surprise, this was the same gentleman that I had selected. Fortunately, he was happy to take over my case in the NHS.

He subsequentally saw me through my second bout of cancer  and a double mastectomy. That was 12 years ago and, I have never looked back. I have heard of many people who have had the same surgeon under the NHS that they had privately and vice versa. I cannot fault the diagnosis, treatment and aftercare that I've received under the NHS.

However, if you need surgery, you might get this a little quicker by going private. This really depends upon where you live and, how Covid is impending upon waiting times in your area. Why not try the NHS treatment first and, if you're not happy, you can always still keep your private appointment?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. I shall be thinking of you on 9th/10th and hope that all goes well for you. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi I am currently having the same symptoms tingling down my left arm pins and needles type feeling and pressure also found a tiny hard lump in my left breast going to my Gp surgery tomorrow struggling to sleep as google as confirmed the worst for me I am only 28 but my breast is really painful but i did notice before when I got a hot shower the pain settled for a while I hope it's just the same as yours or a cyst x

  • Hey,

Easier said than done I know, but please try to think positively.

I was a mess, and got myself into a right state, Dr Google did not help it told me the worst!
I had exactly these symptoms and I had 2 ultrasound scans, one private as I just didn't believe it was nothing - It was nothing!
Turns out the lump went away on its own. However around a week after my cycle starts I have a very lumpy breast tissue and it's SO painful I can barely sleep.
The pins and needles were all linked to anxiety and stress as soon as I got the negative result they started to disappear.

I hope you get your scan as soon as possible! I really hope you are ok! Try not to google too much as the best thing to do is to visit your Gp and get referred ASAP!!

  • My pins and needles in arm have been on going for months they said it was neuralgia then I noticed the lump and then seen these symptoms was linked I have a GP appointment tomororw so I will let you know thank you so much for replying x
