colonoscopy pain

i had a colonoscopy on 6th october 2018 it was really painful and the consultant didnt care i was screaming for him to stop and all he said was that it was taking him too long with all my screaming, he eventually aborted the procedure and used a smaller camera which was a little better but not much. he didnt go right to the end of my colon and was very dismissive about my trauma.I felt very let down as nothing was explained to me at all, only that as far as he could see there was no cancer, so what were the lesions on my colon that were seen on a ct scan. I will be reporting this as soon as i can. and by the way NO the sedation didnt work.

  • Hi, I'm not sure that you saw my response from yesterday, I can't see it on here.  Like you, I said never again.  But then I changed my mind.  I decided that the 'doctor' in question would not stop me getting treatment if I needed it.  Nothing sinister was found in my first colonoscopy but they said I should have another in six months and I was determined that he wouldn't stop me from getting it.  As my complaint was still ongoing, I arranged with the bowel screening team to have my second procedure with another doctor in another hospital.  I found them to be very helpful.  I had the procedure and because of what happened last time, they changed the ratio of drugs and I was given less sedation and more pain relief.  I'm happy to say this worked for me.  This time, the procedure was shorter which may be why but I'm sure it also helped that the doctor was gentle rather than acting like I was a piece of meat.  My second procedure goes to show that there is no need for this to be such torture which is why I'm taking my complaint to the Ombudsman now.  No one should have to go through what we have.  Like you, I was traumatised, but this has also improved since the second procedure.  I hope you feel better soon and can arrange a way in which you get any treatment you may need in a civilised way.  It's important to know, which no one tells you, you can tell them to stop.

  • I gave my response to their response on 17th November.  Got a reply last week in which they upheld everything in their first response.  Even though I had proof that they there were inconsistencies in their response.  I'm going to the Ombudsman now.  When that is complete, I will upload their redacted replies.  Thanks for your interest.

  • I had the same experience last year. I was holding onto the bed for dear life with the pain. They told me it was the air stretching the colon. I tried again with more sedation or so they said. It was excruciating. I had a sigmoidoscopy years ago and it was no bother at all

I was left on the note that I'd get a scan. I've called twice but still to no avail. I've been left for almost a year now

Still have stomach cramps diarrhea and constipation. I had a black tarry stool, I've had microscopic blood in my poo and now just thicker than an pencil stools. Abdominal pain when I eat too.

    Left in Limbo.

  • I went for a check-up colonoscopy yesterday 20/4 /23 I had sedation but halfway around the bowel the pain was excruciating, the Dr stopped straight away as this had happened to me on a previous one because of the same problem so another CT scan to check the rest of it but pleased to say they didn't find anything unlike the first time they found a bleeding polyp. The staff were wonderfull and very caring including the young Dr.

  • Glad to hear that nothing abnormal was found catmummy.  I just spotted this thread as it was up there with new posts (I'm actually mainly reponding to breast cancer ones as I have that!) but just wanted to add my support to those people who have had awful experiences.  I've only had a sigmoidoscopy and it was terrible, I was in so much pain and by the end of it I was blacking out.  My blood pressure had dropped ridiculously low and I had to stay behind until it was a bit higher.  It can't be right surely, I really don't know what that procedure does to your body!  Hopefully they can find some new way to check for cancer which isn't as invasive.

  • Hi i was referred for a colonoscopy on the 2 week pathway due to bleeding weightloss and pain, I had colonoscopy before 3 years ago  with no issues just slight discomfort, but this colonoscopy yesterday was horrendous the worst pain I've ever experienced it's up there with passing gallstones and child birth with I've had and done

the sedation didn't kick in it was rushed and was given gas and air which was useless, the doctor kept saying don't do that when I was crying out in pain, the male  nurse was way too  rough pulling me about  there are bruises on my stomach and side I was in tears I felt totally violated and screaming out in pain crying, I have narrowing in my Bowel  due to diverticulitis the colonoscopy couldn't be completed and I've been  referred for a CT scan

  • Just wanted to reassure everyone who has read these posts, I read these posts as I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy today and was so terrified after reading this thread!!

You will be fine, I had the sedative for the endoscopy but was more awake for the colonoscopy and it was pain free. Just makes you feel like you want to go to the toilet.

I would have it again and not worry at all if I had to go back.

So sorry to read these bad experiences

  • I had my first colonoscopy 2 days ago and was more worried with the prep than the colonoscopy itself, I was very wrong as I never felt anything after the nurse and the doctor said they gave me the sedation and I remember everything, my story is similar to all in here to be honest. I have pelvic pain around 3 years on right side and very painfull period cramps but the GP only send me to perform ultrasounds which were coming all normal and said its stress, and I thought ok my work is really stressful and husband and kids. So I quit my job, I improved for 2 months, had shingles in May and after that I feel my life just colapsed I got better from the shingles and started having irregular periods basically had 4 times in the last 2 months and a severe pain on pelvic area more on left side, I managed to get a face to face with the GP which its really hard nowadays and she refered me for a colonoscopy (2weeks) and was very quick I was contacted to perform first a FIT ( which was really dificult to do as I was with loose stool for 1 month) but I send it anyway and aparently it was positive, only found out because it was on the colonoscopy report. The doctor that started the process and the pain started and I told them and I started screaming because it was unbearable and both the doctor and the nurse only saying for me to pass gaz and to be quiet and I thought maybe I am overreacting as everyone I talked said the worst was the prep, so I tried to no scream much and I did pass the gas but didnt helped at all and I just wanted them to finish, which they did but the doctor never come to speak with me, he said that all was good even though he took a lot of samples and because the scan is right in your face I could see some lesions or blood on the screen, I don’t understand why the doctor didnt come to speak with me. I am still waiting for the sedation to do the job but after 2 days probably not going to happen. Sorry for the long post, but I was felling crazy and after seeing here so many stories I felt that I could just vent.

  • I had one in 2019 and it was just mildly uncomfortable. I think they are easier than endoscopies.....however I'm getting a colonoscopy next week so praying that it goes ok!

  • I literally had my colonoscopy today. It was very painful and took about 35 minutes. I went with the gas and air because I cannot stand needles. It didn't do anything to reduce the pain. The doctor and nurses were comforting and apologetic, but just had to get through it. Honestly not sure if I just have a low pain threshold or maybe being short, my colon is more narrow.

Had two polyps removed which they believe to be benign, so good news overall.
