colonoscopy pain

i had a colonoscopy on 6th october 2018 it was really painful and the consultant didnt care i was screaming for him to stop and all he said was that it was taking him too long with all my screaming, he eventually aborted the procedure and used a smaller camera which was a little better but not much. he didnt go right to the end of my colon and was very dismissive about my trauma.I felt very let down as nothing was explained to me at all, only that as far as he could see there was no cancer, so what were the lesions on my colon that were seen on a ct scan. I will be reporting this as soon as i can. and by the way NO the sedation didnt work.

  • Hope you get it sorted - I am going to refuse my COLONOSCOPY. I know someone that works in that department and they said a lot of people just run out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi,

I just had a colonoscopy this morning and they said it wasn't painful but may feel uncomfortable, well........ I am not joking it was the worst pain I have ever experienced! Due to everyone pretending the pain isn't that bad and that the laxatives are the worst part, I only had gas and air...... well i generally thought I was dieing!!!! The nurses and lady actually doing it were actually really nice. But, afterwards i was a bit embarrassed about how much fuss I made throughout and they had to stop early due to how much pain I was in and they couldn't get around some corners! So I googled why it hurts more in some than others and some people have colons with a lot more corners and turns, and aparently mine is like this. It says online that certain types of turns and corners can cause severe pain when the camera is going around. Really, I do think that people should be put to sleep for this procedure, it was horrific.

  • I have just had a colonoscopy and it was extremely painful. I had gas and air which didn't seem to do anything and I couldn't even use this when the pain became that bad as I couldn't move. The prep, plenvu was also horrendous and was so difficult to drink. I was drinking the second dosage slower then the first one but I still vomited it all back up and was so worried they wouldn't be able to do the procedure. They were able to do some of it but I couldn't have it all done as it became too painful. Don't know why they always say procedures are just "uncomfortable" when they actually cause excruitating pain.  It's the day after my colonoscopy and my stomach is really painful and swollen.

  • I had a colonoscopy 3 nights ago. The pain in my stomach was unbelievable, Its left me shocked how bad it was, im told I was making a lot of noise, they had to stop the procedure. The pain was low down in my abdomen at the front, lower part of my stomach. Was it the pumping in of air that did it, as I don't believe my *** h actually felt that bad! Quite traumatised by it, now I'm to have a CT scan, if something is spotted, im back in for another colonoscopy! (Oh lord!) Can I opt for full knock out anaesthetic??

So basically it didn't work at all, they only made it to the first bend! I read that typically with pain relief colonoscopies are quite 'do-able' so to speak! So why didn't it work for me?? Total waste of time the 3days prep beforehand.

  • I totally feel your pain! I was ok with the drinking part and the prep, was purely the procedure for me and im devastated it didn't work, and am massively bloated still 3days later!

Gas & air didn't do much for me either! Fentanyl was ok, but think I needed more.

  • I was really lucky I guess with my consultant ...yes it was terribly painful but he offered to stop procedure a couple of times . And apologised for how uncomfortable it was for me.

I would definitely complain...also I was told a lot of the pain was caused by diverticulitis disease and an inflamed colon. Sadly this was followed by a cancer diagnosis and a secondaries

  • To try to counter balance the bad experiences, I have had to have 2 colonoscopies in the past month, I chose gas and air for both. Yes it was uncomfortable but it's a weird pain I felt like an alien trying to burst out but without the finale. I would choose gas and air again and the benefits of the procedure definitely out way short term discomfort. As a side note it helps to chat to the staff, takes your mind if things.

  • I had my first colonoscopy today. I feel completely shocked . I had just gas and air and even though everyone says it's not painful or just discomfort , I was in excruciating agony, I nearly passed out it was so bad and tears were falling done face abs I was grip bed and it felt like a complete nightmare . I am not someone who makes a fuss or is a coward and I usually put up with pain and feel I am a strong person .. but this was hell. I didn't make them stop but I was nearly beyond coping. It was horrific. They had got almost to the top of my colon I knew so I didnt want them to stop but as the doctor kept push and twist the  scope and didn't stop , she was obviously keen to get rid of a loop or get it thru the final segment but it was absolutely appalling pain that shouldn't be gone through unless unavoidable.  I am more than surprised there are some who feel little or no pain.
    I felt the opposite.
This should be on strong sedation or general anaesthesia and stroner pain relief .
I feel like I will have nightmares about this and will remember the traumatic experience.

I would go through it again of course if I had to, but I would demand more pain relief and sooner .

    Good luck all !

  • I had the exact same response from the doctor that was doing my colwhen I screamed out in pain I've had 4 in total over a few years and I refuse ever to have another I had back and tummy pain for months afterwards Doctors and nurses are generally extremely  sympathetic but certainly in this area of medicine it doesn't appear to be the case

  • Update from me...I did put it a formal complaint.  I had to wait 16 weeks for a reply and even then it was late.  The response was, ready for it, I hallucinated everything due to the pain relief.  (I should be so lucky!)  They minimised everything and gaslighted me.  Needless to say, there is now another complaint which isn't nearly as polite as the first one.
