Thyroid nodule...inconclusive biopsy and possible surgery

Hi Everyone,

I went to the doctors with a pulled neck muscle around 3 months ago and whilst she was examining me she found 2 swollen lymph nodes which she wanted checking out so I was referred for an ultra sound scan. Whilst having my scan they found a small nodule on my thyroid but was reassured that it looked fine but he would be mentioning it on my report. I was then referred to ent by my gp and the consultant there had a good look at my throat etc and seemed unconcerned but wanted the thyroid consultant to look at it. When I got to the thyroid consultant he seemed very concerned  and told me the nodule looked “abnormal” and was sent straight for a biopsy! After a a scary 2 weeks my results have come back as inconclusive and I have been given the option of another biopsy or to have it removed. Forgot to mention that my thyroid is also slightly over active and I have an appt with endricology in Nov.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? My anxiety is through the roof

  • Thanks for replying, just that when you Google benign symptoms for thyroid nodule, all you get is symptoms for cancerous ones. Apart from the clear the throat cough I have no pain or lumps/swellings. Also I was told the CT scan never showed any cancer in surrounding or nearby areas which was good to know.  Got to keep my fingers crossed I suppose.

Hope all is well with you too.

  • Google is terrible! lol

I studied hundreds of US scan images on Google trying to compare it to my own and identify if its cancer or not, and found features of not cancer. It didn't look as bad as some of those you find.

Thyroid cancer is apparently quite rare (though it doesn't look like it when reading this forum), and it's the best cancer you can get (if such thing exists, best cancer), as it grows very slow and does not tend to go in other body parts. So usually people get rid of it completely without any complications.

You need to keep an eye on it, if the lump grows, and have another check up in a few months time. If they offer you FNA, go for it.

    All the best of luck,

    Maryna

  • Glad to say that I got an ultrasound on my neck area a few days ago and it is benign, the doctor said it should not cause any problems. Not sure what size the nodule is as was just so relieved at the time. Will most likely get a letter with regards to any follow up visits needed.

  • That's great news! Glad it turned out  nothing to worry about.

It's worth to keep an eye on it and make sure they do regular check ups every 6 months.

I am still waiting for my results and its past 3 weeks they promised

  • Thank You.

Will chase them up if I don't hear anything back. Is it scan results you are waiting for?

Got to say that in my experience of scans/ultrasounds that they soon flag it up if something bad is found and let you know, so the fact that you have not heard anything is maybe not a bad thing although I fully understand that we all want results back asap. Anyway let me know how you get on and hope all is okay

  • No, it's histology report I am waiting for, after they took the part of thyroid with the lump out, basically to say cancer or not-cancer. They take forever on some reason. Nothing came from the lab yet, and when it does, doctors will be having a meeting to dicuss...

I probably won't know till the end of next week now the earliest...

  • Hi there, I hope you are keeping well.

I now know that I have cancer :(

It is a "better" one, follicular variant of papillary carcinoma, encapsulated, non-invasive and doesn't look like lymph nodes spread. But because of the size 4.5cm they will have to do completion thyrodectomy (remove the rest of my thyroid) on 29th of September. Depending on findings, it will be decided if I need RAI treatment or not.

Keep an eye on your nodule, even if its benign.  Mine supposedly was back in November... it's a question I have for them, how comes it turned large cancer 6 months later?

    Wishing you all the best:)

  • On the subject of nodules.

I had a 0.2cm benign nodule on my right lobe and then on my last scan they said there were no nodules. Apparently they can disappear?!

  • Hi Bardon,

I'm in a similar position to you. They found a 3.2cm nodules in right side of thyroid and fine needle byopsy came bk as inconclusive finding follicular cells. I had my right lobe removed just over 4 weeks ago and have an appointment tomorrow to discus results. I am hoping I don't need another operation as thyroid is working fine. Can I ask what type of cancer did they find? Can't stop thinking bout it

  • Good evening

I hope you're recovering well, could you tell me if your nodule was detected on the ultrasound? I've had an US recently it revealed multiple lymph nodes in my neck on both sides with cystic degeneration plus thyroid heterogeneous texture, but the radiologist didn't mention any module, will be seen by another consultant tomorrow, you sound very brave and strong I wish I were.
