Testicular Cancer, Lump that's sometimes felt and others not

Hey there,

Some BG info: Male, Age 23. WARNING: Long Post. Added as much detail as I can. TLRD at the end.

So on Wednesday (12/09/2019). I was for some reason having a rummage around me testicles as I was about to uhh take a leak. To my horror, I found what seemed to be a small, (like almost slightly bigger than the tip of a rice grain), hard lump on my right testicle near the Epididymus (sp?). I found this when examining the right testing with my left hand. (this is relevant, I assure you). I attempted to test with my right hand because why not right? Nothing. Couldn't find anything. Which really, really confused me.

So I took a shower just to see whether or not it was the skin just being bunched (it was rather cold tbh..) in the hopes the hot water (like, really Hot, love me a hot shower hehe) would help get it too loosen up so I can have a good feel of things. I found it difficult to find it. But I knew it was there. I'd felt it earllier outside the shower and had a good full around the area. Still no luck.

So. Out of shower, dried. Etc etc. Went to bed with the promise that I'd call me GP for an appointment. I'm too stubborn to let something like this go.

Wake up in morning, about to have another shower and to my immediate horror, feel the same lump. Same size. Same location. Using the same left hand. Nothing with right tho... Have another shower and again, attempt to find it. No such luck.

So I called GP and they offer me an appointment for the Friday (the next day). Unfortunately (and I wish I didn't), I asked for an appointment for the next week on Wednesday (19/09/2018). Mainly because I wasn't sure whether my employer would allow me the half day/ day off. (I've since found out that for Docs appointments that were made in an emergency or for some urgent reason, I actually only need a a half days notice if I feel its that important - I love my employer, really do).

Since then, I've beside myself with stress. Only going to the Gym has been able to put me mind at rest temporarily. I did call 111 for help (I really needed someone to talk to tbh.. I don't want to tell me family because it'd worry em needlessly and the same for my mates) to see if theres a walk-in centre or some sort of drop in that I can go to. Got a callback from a lovely dude from the NHS and considering I've had 0 other symptoms, he didn't seem all that worried (although he did recommend I ensure I attended the appointment come Wednesday).

So yea.. I've no idea what it is. I just wish it wasn't there so I could get on with my life and my plans!

With regards to this appointment on Wednesday, would it be wrong of me to request an Ultrasound irregardless of whether or not me GP finds something? Again, due to the nature of said lump; it's very umm intermittent

How much would an Ultrasound cost? I've been told theres up to a 3 week wait time if the GP doesn't consider it too serious. If need be, I've the funds to get one done privately. The longer I wait, the more I'll worry and that's not something that I wanna the people around me through. With regards to my health, money isn't my main priority.

If you've read through that wall of text then I commend you and I wish all the best.

Thanks you again

umali

TLDR: Found tiny lump just a bit larger than the head of a rice grain on right testicle with left hand. Can't find it with right hand. Can only find it in a colder setting.

  • Hey I know this is an old thread but I'd appreciate it if anyone could help ..for about 4 months now I'm now 100% convinced I've got TC my left testicle feels a dunno somewhat different in texture that the other ...or I don't know if its exactly the same and this is all in my head .. to date ..there is .
    1. No lump

    2. no increase in size

    3. no dull ache

    4. No back pain .
on the contrary I feel the strongest and fittest I've ever felt am just 60% certain my left testicle is somewhat denser than the other ...or bonier ? A dunno but am terrified ..surely after nearly five months there would be more symptoms ?

  • Hey,

I'd honestly go to your GP and ask them to examine. I can assure you that they've dealt with thousands of cases like yourselves. It's good that you are examining yourself though. It's a good habit to have.

Quick question, are you examining yourself after a warm shower (or even during)?. Warm water will soften everything up and make it an easier examination. If you're slightly cold, then everything will feel firmer.

So before I say anything; I'm no Doctor. But my first question would be; Is your left testicle larger than your right? With me, my right is larger than the left and is actually "bonier" or rather "firmer" than the left. This is as far as I'm aware; normal for me and many others.

If that is not the case with yourself, then I'd still say you have very little to worry about. If you're not feeling a lump; I don't think you have an issue. Especially since you do not exhibit the usual symptoms.

BUT! I'm not a Doctor and I highly recommend calling your GP and getting an appointment.

When I had my issues, I got an immediate appointment and requested the GP and they couldn't find anything. The lump - Epydimal Cyst; would be more uhh feelable when there is a greater blood flow in lower body such as a hard Lower Body session at the Gym. Basically, it was harder and "larger" and easier to find. So when he examined (physical examinations), he didn't find anything.

I still insisted on an Ultrasound (which I do suggest you do if you're feeling that worried about it; better safe than sorry!). He thankfully agreed and it was found I had multiple Epydimal Cystys (literally benign lumps that are 100% nothing to worry about). So whilst I was right there was something down there, it was nothing I should really worry about at all - whether that's in the present or in the future.

    Apologies for late reply.
    Cheers!

  • Hi Umali,

Thank you for sharing this with us, I know this was two years ago but I would really appreciate you taking some time out to respond.

I have the same lump it is the size and shape of a grain of rice at the top of the testes near the veins at the back of the testicle and I've been getting ache's in my groin, lower back and sometimes in the lower abdomin, I was just wondering if you receiving ache's too? When I have searched on Google it says these are the exact signs of teaticilar cancer so you can imagine I'm freaking out haha. Although I do have an ultrasound next week from seeing the Doctor in early March and she couldn't feel anything although i definitely can now.

    Many thanks,

    Taylor

  • I feel so bad for not getting back to you! I'm usually on top of my emails but I seemed to have missed this.

I hope this finds you well.

I had some aches but I'm a Powerlifter so that's pretty much par the course for me. Aches in me groin are the same.

I hope that you'd received some kind of answer since? I'm so, so, sorry for not getting back to you..

    Cheers

  • I know this thread is old but I would like to talk to someone about my situation. I'm 20 by the way. I found a walnut size lump about 2 weeks ago and went to my GP this morning who told me it was probably a cyst but he's put me down for a ultrasound. Should I be worried? As why would I need one if he thinks it's a cyst? Also my mum has stage 3 breast cancer and she's fighting her own battle so how do I tell her about my lump? Or shall I wait till I get results before mentioning it to her ? Thanks guys sorry to bother anyone

  • Good afternoon!

It was good that your GP has booked you in for an Ultrasound. To be honest with you, my GP couldn't even find my lump (which turned out to be an Epydimal Cyst) and the still booked me in for an Ultrasound.

They do it to be extra sure that they've not missed something. Ultimately, it's damn near impossible to tell me by feel as to whether a Testicular Lump is benign (cyst or w.e) or not. That's what the Ultrasound is for.

With regards to telling your Mum; I am so sorry to hear that. Here's to hoping she will pull through! I'd say after you get the results. Generally the individual (Sonographer) performing the Ultrasound will tell you what they've found. Mine told me straight up that all he could see is a Cyst but then also sent the results to me Doctor as part of the whole process.

I'd say get the scan done and ask the Sonographer what they found. If they don't tell you (some don't for any number of reasons - sometimes it's because they've got that many patients.. who knows *shrug*) then you'll have to wait a week or two for the results to get to your GP.

  • Also forgot to mention my testicles both feel smooth no lumps

  • Hello,

I know this is an old post.

but my left testicle feels bonier or firmer than the right.

I don't have any testicle pain, I did have pain but that was because I kept squeezing them and touching them an awful lot due to me suffering from health anxiety doesn't help I keep going to dr google lol.

But Like I said I am not showing any pain testicle isn't swollen at all my left is bigger than my right but as far as I'm aware that is normal

    many thanks

    Jake

  • Hey there,

See I've got an interesting thing where my right testicle is larger than me left. In turn, it is somewhat firmer than me left.
With it being larger, it will also be firmer (because there's more.. well.. biological mass to it).

"I don't have any testicle pain, I did have pain but that was because I kept squeezing them and touching them an awful lot due to me suffering from health anxiety doesn't help I keep going to dr google lol."

Oh lol, i definitely did this when I was super anxious about it so I feel ya mate.

With your left testicle being bigger than you right, it does stand to reason that it's gonna be firmer. Which is normal as stated earlier from em talks with the GP.

    Here's what you do:
    1. Take a nice long shower/ bath

    2. Make sure water is warm.

    3. Have a feel of things. You'll find that the left, bigger testicle that you thought was firmer has softened up a little.

I'd also highly recommend chatting to your GP about this and tell them what you are worried about and ask for an Ultrasound. Even in the current state of things, procecures such as Testical Ultrasounds are still being done.

I myself recently had a Colonoscopy done at the heigh of the Summer 2020 Lockdown when I was having gut issues.

Contact your GP and get that test done to put your mind at ease mate. Ultimately, I'm not a Doctor and/ or specialist im this field. I hope this helps pal :)

  • Hello and thank you for the reply!

hope you had a good Christmas and New Years,

so basically it turns out I was paranoid turns out all men are different and especially down there some can have a bigger right or a bigger left it all depends like I said I have no lump and definitely no swelling so there wasn't anything to worry about I was told so thank you for you reply
