A lump at the anal opening! help

Hello,

Hope this isn't too disgusting but Im looking for advice. I am a 22 year old female and I find this topic very hard to bring up to my GP. I usually open my bowels every other day or sometimes in 3 days times, which has been a norm for me since I was young.  It’s normal for me to have a rectal bleeding everytime i have a bowel movement, where i find streaks of bright red blood on the toilet paper and my rectum being swollen and painful. I always though it is normal for the bleeding to occur since I usually pass hard stools and also this has been an on-going thing for me.

Today I open my bowels and as usual it was painful (Type 2 - bristol stool chart) and hard to pass. I always open my bowel in squat position to help me pass it. I was aware for a long time that there’s a lump in my anus. However today i had a good look of it through the mirror and i can see it’s very swollen and red. It feels about the size of pea maybe, is under the skin and potruding from the left rectum wall. It definitely protrudes out more when I strain and have a bowel movement or go into a squat position.

I have been ignoring this for a long time and figured probably this is a piles ? or something. But I am not so sure... Looking forward to your reply.

thank you.

  • Andy, Did you ever get this looked in to ?

  • Never be worried about going to the Doctor, it's their job to check you over. It's a bit a deal as taking your car to the garage. It's what they are there for, to help people. They are professionals, we need to stop being embarrassed about ourselves in this country. TALK. Especially men. People are dying through not being open .  I don't know what is to blame about this part of our culture, we all have the same body parts, every single one of us. Would an Android Doctor be easier to talk to?!
please, please, please always see a Doctor if you have a worrying issue or a hunch. Hope you are well and it worked out fine

  • I know you said you never found out what it was but did it eventually go away? I have a small hard painful lump(only get pain on contact, wiping cleanig etc) on the opening to my anus and like most i am worried about contact the doctors, eventually built up enough courage to call today to be told sorry there are no appoinments left call tomorrow, I am after a little assurance thats all.

  • Has anyone been to the Dr's about these lumps yet? My Dr's are only doing online appts so I don't see how that will work!

I, too, have a small hard lump. It's definitely not like piles.

I'm in my mid-50s and have regular bowel movements although they differ from one day to the next - never quite constipation nor diarrhoea though. I'm really tired at the moment, going to work then crashing out for the evening and just going straight to bed. Literally, no other life at all!

    Keep well everyone.

  • Hi all,

I've just found this chat. I too have a small hard lump and have only really noticed it in last two weeks as been too shy to even examine myself. I was prescribed ointment by my gp as assumed was a thombosed hemmerhoid but its not made the slightest difference so plucked up the courage for a gp exam tomorrow. Im dreading it as I'm such a prude but I will let you know what they say. Mine too is blue/purple and sometimes feels like it goes away only too reappear later in the day. Its there every day. Its feels like raw nerves when I touch it but I've not had any change in bowel movements or bleeding. I did abuse a lot of drugs and alcohol when I was younger though so I've always worried that I might have damaged myself back then. I also exercise quite a bit with weights so I was kind of hoping it might be caused by that. Its making me uneasy though, esp when you you Google things. Worst thing you can do but you can't help it!

  • Hi Bedhead and welcome to the forum.

Some of the members on this discussion haven't been back since they made their initial posts so there is a chance you may not find out what happened.

If you are worried about the symptoms you've been experiencing do be sure to get in touch with your GP. In the first instance a lot of your surgeries, as you've mentioned, are doing telephone consultations but they will call you in if they feel they need to see you in person.

When you speak to the doctor, it can be difficult to remember everything you want to say and difficult to remember everything they say, especially on the phone but I hope these tips we have on our website will help you get the most out of your appointment and help you get seen.

    Kind regards,

  • Hey how did you get on at your doctors app? I have the very same thing as you even down to the feeling of the same pain. I haven't contacted my gp yet i just can't face the fact that i have to show these certain parts of my body off to him/her its so embarrassing but the pain is becoming too much everytime i have bowel movement or a shower/bath as the water absolutely stings....

  • I am. 50 yr old female and have just noticed pea size hard lump around anus, I'm terrified as I have taken a picture and seen similar pictures online which are anal cancer. No ther symptoms apart from extreme fatigue
