Colonoscopy without sedation

Hi everyone, I’m writing this to reassure anyone that may be going for a colonoscopy and is wondering what the the prep is like, how does it feel and what to expect.

I went to the GP with changed bowel habits and some blood in my stool, she referred me down the two week cancer route, so I was scheduled for a colonoscopy within a fortnight after my initial consultation as I had similar symptoms as a person with bowel cancer would have.  Now I’m a 32 year old female so it’s unusual for someone of my age to have bowel cancer as a rule of thumb it usually affects older people (not always the case but you may take some comfort in that!), even knowing that I was still petrified why they had sent me down this quick cancer route - did they know something I didn’t, I was really worried about it to a point I nearly cancelled the whole thing - ignorance is bliss and all that!

I didn’t cancel, I got given my prescription for the MoviPrep collected it and arranged the time off with Work.  Now my appointment was at 2pm, so the day before I ate as normal, avoided red meat, and kind of stuck to the guide they gave me.  I was meant to stop eating at 1pm the day before and I was literally cramming a chicken baguette into my mouth at the last minute.  I got home around 5ish and began my prep at 7pm, I had a split dose, one litre the night before and one in the morning.  Now I’ve heard real horror stories about MoviPrep, and let me tell you I didn’t experience any.  The taste really isn’t that bad, it’s a bit like salty lemon, I wouldn’t go buy it from a shop if I had the choice, but it’s really not that bad, I just chugged a glass of it every 15 mins until the litre was gone.  Now then even after 3 hours I only had one bowel movement and that was it.  I had a bit of stomach cramp (it does make you bloated!) and I went to bed with the idea in my head to call and cancel in the morning if the second lot of prep didn’t work!  The bonus with MoviPrep is it fills you up so you’re not hungry either, I went to bed woke up at 6 and began my second litre, now during the second litre is when movement began to happen.  For me I found it easier to just sit on the toilet for a solid hour, I didn’t get any stinging as some people do, but by the end when you know the MoviPrep has done it’s job it is literally like having a wee through the other end where nothing but clear liquid comes out.  Now I was concerned because I didn’t get rid of that much and still  convinced it hadn’t worked, but reset assured it had worked and I just didn’t have a lot in my bowel in the first place!

The moviprep finished about 8:30am then I started to get hungry around 9:30am.  By then everything is out and you’re just waiting, I wasn’t allowed water after midday so I kept my stomach full by drinking plenty of water!  On a side note prior to no liquids and during the time of no food you can have clear liquids, so I treat myself to a glass of white wine (not red it’ll stain your bowel and may be mistaken for blood) the night before. So all in all the prep wasn’t bad.

I arrived at hospital for my appointment, waited 30 mins saw the nurse who explained everything checked my vitals that I’d had my prep, no food or water etc. I then get handed these shorts with a opening in the back, get changed into them, put my pants back over the top and wait again, I reckon by 3pm the doctor came out, introduced himself, went through the consent and asked if I wanted sedation (I didn’t) and said when you’re ready come in.

So I went in, took my pants off, they keep everything under your bed, there’s a monitor so you can watch and nurses there checking your vitals etc.  So they hand me Entonox (gas and air) and insist you take 5 breaths before starting so you know how to use it, after 5 I was already light headed.  So this is where it begins, you can feel it; it’s uncomfortable and rightly so as it’s not a daily occurrence but it was not painful, at some points especially the corners you can feel it, he asked if I could lie on my back at some point and my front to make the camera round into smaller corners, and the sensation I imagine (I don’t have kids) would be what a baby kicking would feel like.  In total it lasted 30 mins, I was watching and chatting to the nurses during it, I think I hit up the Entonox 3 more times (singular times) but that was it and I probably could have done without it.  So rest assured it is not that bad at all, now everyone’s pain threshold is different and all bowels are different so it may be more difficult to navigate through other ones.  But if you’re scared about it and in debate over sedation then I hope this eases your mind a bit!  I think the Entonox would be sufficient enough for me it was anyway.  So we’re at the end, during he says the moviprep worked really well, had a clean bowel and there was no anomalies, they didn’t find anything what so ever!  He explained that he’s taken routine biopsies as he may expect to find a minimal trace of IBS but that’s it, and that can be remedied with diet.

Afterwards they wheeled me out into the recovery ward, I get dressed straight away, go sit down to a glass of water and cheese and crackers (the best cheese and crackers I’ve ever had after 28 hours not eating!).  They do say if your bowel is full of air release it as it’ll cause discomfort later on, now I know during the procedure he was pumping air in for a better view so i was expecting some, but nothing.  I felt 100% fine just hungry and thirsty.  After 30 mins the nurse went through my report, explained a few things, asked how I felt, checked my vitals and I was free to go.  You can drive after, I went home had a pizza, drinks and went to bed.  Woke up fine the next morning and went back to work.  I had no discomfort afterwards, I wasn’t in any pain it was like it never happened.

As I said everyone is different, but I read so many horror stories before mine which probably didn’t help prior to having mine, but if you’re trying to scour the internet for information as I was I hope this helps! Any questions just ask!

  • Thank you - I had my colonoscopy last Thursday May 2nd

Like you I had a white diet for a day then had to have only liquids day before. The evening before I had moviprep, I should have drank 2 litres plus 2litres of water but I only managed 1 litre before being sick- how can something that smells so nice ( lemon) actually taste so horrible! I did however drink the water.

The day of the colonoscopy I arrived early and was seen early which was good. I opted for no sedation and it was the best choice for me. It was a little uncomfortable but absolutely doable. It took about 20 mins fortunately they didn’t find anything, which was wonderful because I’d had stage 3 colon cancer over 14yrs ago and as I’d somehow ‘slipped through the net ‘ I was understandably a bit on edge as to what they may find. But all wonderful and next text will be 5yrs.. so good luck to anyone who reads this, hope it’s helped

  • It is entirely up to you, of course, but when I did some reading about bowel cancer and the treatment options, I realised that it was all far worse than colonoscopy.

If you are concerned that colonoscopy is worse than sigmoidoscopy, then I can tell you that the two procedures are very similar in discomfort levels. In fact, because a consultant did the full colonoscopy, it may even have been slightly easier!

  • Hi

I can understand how scared you may feel regarding the colonoscopy but please believe me, the worse part is drinking the prep. I had a colonoscopy in 2005, I had colon cancer.  I couldn’t really remember having the colonoscopy then as I had, had so many horrible examinations done but when they did mine last week I can honestly say I was ok, I’m not the bravest of people but I didn’t have to be. That is simply one examination, if you don’t have it done you run the risk of those polyps turning cancerous. I had major surgery and 6 months of chemotherapy. Fortunately im

still here and well. My advice is to bite the bullet... it’s far easier than surgery and chemotherapy.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your experience,  I've been a nervous wreck all week. Having mine Saturday,  not  having sensation aabsolutely  hate the thought of it . But I know I have to go for my own sake and peace of mind, so feeling a bit better reading your story so again Thank you.

  • Just had my pathology report and it is all clear this time. Even better - I don't have to have a repeat colonoscopy in 3 years time. I know not everyone gets such good news but it has made the whole experience worthwhile for me. Even if they had found something suspicious, it would still have been at an early stage and so more easily treated.

Good luck to everyone waiting for this procedure - it is not so bad in reality as it is in your imagination beforehand!

  • Hi All

I read this page with interest after being booked for my first colonoscopy, thank you.

I don’t have cancer, but I wanted to share my experience as an extremely nervous first timer wanting to go totally sedation free. Here goes.

Was terrified, seriously terrified about the prep. More so than the actual procedure. Had a slice of toast at breakfast then just clear liquids as per sheet. Could have murdered a cheese sandwich.

Had the first dose at 5pm. Didn’t taste as bad as I thought it would. Quite syrupy and hard to drink but it was fine. I had plenvu which is 500ml, followed by the same of water.

Fast forward 45 mins and I felt the urge to go to the toilet.

Well. It was rather hilarious. Like *** furiously from your ***. Only way to describe it. It was like a waterfall. No real cramps or anything so that was good, just lots of gurgling. Bit scared to go far, because - well, it was so watery.

Slightly concerned about drinking the next lot. I don’t think I’ve had as much liquid ever in my life as what just came out.

    update after dose 2......

Ok. Second dose at 6.30pm was a bit more salty but easy enough to drink. I did start to feel more bloated though. I managed that, and a glass of water by 7pm.

Again - there was no pain, and I continued to just pass liquid, none of the awful cramps etc that I had been worried about.

After an hour though I started to feel pretty rubbish. A bit shivery and nauseous but nothing major. Felt sorry for myself so went up to bed, continuing to get up every 30 mins or so to pass more liquid, which was now a clear yellow.

I also started to get really thirsty, and had 2 glasses of iced water slowly.

I started to feel a bit more human at around 9.30 so pushed the boat out with a glass of lemon Fanta.

Got to sleep around 11pm, albeit woke up twice to go to the loo in the night.

7.30am. Woke up feeling fine, stomach gurgling like a mad thing though! Passed some more clear yellow liquid and wondering if this will actually stop before the procedure.

Am not too nervous about the procedure itself so have decided not to have sedation.

So, turned up at the hospital and immediately regretted refusing sedation when I was sat with 2 ladies both on their 4th who looked completely shocked I had even considered this. Was told I was insane. Started to panic.

Before I had time to think I was taken in.

The nurse was lovely and asked me a million questions when it started. It was painful but not unbearable. She offered gas and air but I refused in favour of sucking a tic tac and squeezing her hand. It was like period style cramps. Took your breath away, but not awful. I was close to asking for gas and air, but managed to hold off.

I was then asked to move onto my back and the pain lessened significantly for the rest. Then it was just a little uncomfortable at times. It was done in 20 mins.

I had a coffee in recovery and felt really glad I hadn’t taken anything. Plenty of people still woozy with oxygen in that went in before me, only just sitting up, and I had walked out and left before they even had their coffee. Was then out for lunch an hour later.

So all in all it wasn’t so bad. I would have no sedation again - but would want the gas and air nearby. I hope this puts some of you at ease.

  • I just wanted to add my experience as I found reading that of others helpful.  I would echo 100% what Annie said.  Moviprep was fine.   I had orange.  Drank it in big gulps ice cold.  Evening dose (7-8) worked after after 2 hrs but went on with increasing gaps for 5 hours.  No pain or discomfort.  Some gurgling but that’s about it.  Still some flow next morning when I woke up.  Morning dose works much faster and you end up feeling like you are weeing strongly out of your bottom.  Again, the gaps increase until last movement at 1pm.  The procedure was as above.  I had no sedation and it felt fine.  A bit uncomfortable at times but no worse than a stitch or stomach ache.   This procedure can save lives.  Please do not be put off doing it by the prep or the procedure.  They are so minor in the scheme of things.

  • Thank you so much, reading f this has really reassured me!

    Much appreciated

  • Very reassured by your post! My colonoscopy is next week and to say I’ve been anxious is an understatement! Having read your very informative letter, the fear has virtually disappeared - thank you

  • Hello,i had a colonoscopy about 3 yrs ago. I had endoscopy also .Each ,one after the other. The enoscopy was ok but a strange sensation .A bit tickely. The colonoscopy was very painfu,l I found. It doesnt need to be though. I wasnt really offered the gas and air  properly. It was suggested by the nurse that I could use it if I wanted to.

When I asked for it when the procedure became very painful the nurse replied that the colonoscopy was coming to an end and ask me to hang on. My advice is to ask for gas an air from the start.
