enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

    Hi Farah,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and understand your worries. The fact that you have had an ultrasound and been to ENT sounds reassuring. I understand that it is hard to accept this when you still have the enlarged nodes.

Have you been discharged from ENT or do they plan to see you again?  Please don't believe everything you read on the internet. This is responsible for causing uneccessary worry to most people who start surfing. Did you mention the tinnitus and jaw pain to the doctor at the ENT clinic? The two could possibly  be related.

It is a fact that lymph nodes can swell when any sort of infection is present. It sounds as if you need an in-depth talk with your GP to see exactly what  the letter from the ENT department told him about their findings. Hopefully, he'll be able to set your mind at rest.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

thank you for your reply, I have been discharged from ENT. I received a letter about their findings confirming I have three larger nodes but they think they are reactive.

You are so right, the internet can be an awful thing and it has massively set my anxiety off.
I don't think I would be as worried if it wasn't for the fact that everything I read said hard fixed nodes generally mean cancer!

It has reassured me just posting in this forum though. I think I need to trust in the Dr's and put the worry behind me.

    thank you

    x

  • So a few weeks ago I felt a small lump in my neck, didn't think much about it, thought my body was just doing its job and getting rid of an infection before it had happened because I wasn't and hadn't been recently ill.
I'm a student nurse and was on placement last week and of of the nurses got a doctor on the ward go have a look and he asked me loads of questions, the answers are I am having night sweats regularly, I've lost a stone and a half since November, which I keep telling my self is because I'm eating healthier and stuff but if I'm honest I'm really not, and I get breathless from doing nothing.
He said if it was still there next Tuesday to go to my GP. Any were only at Saturday and I've found another two, one just above the original lump in my neck and one nearer the bottom of my neck, and the original one has gotten a little bigger but still no pain there and no infections either.
Was just hoping to talk to some people who have been here for proof it doesn't mean what I think (he did mention lymphoma, but quickly moved on)

    Hi Farah,

I am glad to hear that posting on this forum has helped to reassure you. If you can put your trust in  the doctors and put your worry behind you, that would be great.

In the meanwhile, monitor your nodes yourself. If you can keep a diary of your findings, this would prove helpful if you have to return at a later date for further investigation.

I trust that everything will remain ok, but, if not don't hesitate to see your GP again.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Hopefulfuturenurse,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. Try not to panic - easy to say I know! Lymph nodes can be a reaction to any type of infection. You say that you have no infections, but sometimes we can have a mild one that we are unaware of. There are also some people that have constantly enlarged lymph nodes.

The doctor you saw last week is right. If it is still there on Tuesday, it would be best to see your GP and get it investigated, especially with your other symptoms. I don't know what stage you are at in your nursing training, but this is where a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, as it only serves to scare you further.

Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I sincerely hope that it is nothing serious.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine.

  • Returned to google my symtoms again even though I know I shouldn't and I'm glad I found this thread! Found a lump at the top of my neck on left side the other day and was instantly worried as I have no infections or illnesses. Found another one next to it the same day, both quite large and firm, painless and do not move. Seen GP yesterday she only asked if I've had any before or had them with last virus last year which I replied no. She showed slight concern at the size of them and mentioned 'hanging around for an ultrasound' but then changed her mind and told me to come back in 2 weeks. I googled symtoms and seen another symptom of lymphoma was itching; I have been itching like mad for weeks trying to figure out what may be irritating my skin, especially my neck area so I am now convinced I have this and have been in a state of worry/tears. I've also had a bit of chest/ neck and top of back pain. Has anyone else had the large lumps and the itching?

    Hi Lea,

    Welcome to our forum.

Quite a number of us on here have had large breast lumps accompanied by itching. They have also exprienced all sorts of other pains too, but, in many cases, this is attributed to the anxiety we are all going through.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi [@LeaM16]‍

I'm sorry you are feeling so anxious! I was in your position a few months ago; I know it is hard but honestly stay off google! It is the devil when it comes to things like this and always says the worst.
My new lumps are firm and fixed but I've had ultra sounds and ENT appt and they aren't a cause for concern yet google says different so I'm trying to listen to the professionals.

it is reassuring you will have an ultra sound so at least your lumps are being checked.

Also, I know when my worry is up I feel like I Have pain in my chest too but then when my anxiety goes that does too, maybe your stress is making your body seem like it has more symptoms too?

I hope you get the answers you need at your ultra sound but honestly try to stay off google in the meantime, it will definitely cause a lot of worry. Let me know how you get on.x

  • Hey -

a really painful large red lump with yellowy white inside appeared about 3 weeks ago on my neck I had a meltdown because of where it was located I've seen 4 doctors who's diagnosed it as cystic acne and with antibiotics it has gone down.

However I can't stop stressing over it and it's causing me to itch. I'm fine during the night but during the day when I think about it it makes me itch and get stressed out. My anxiety is still getting the better of me.

can anyone help me with this it's taken over my life eventhough I know everything's ok :( Googling has made me worse and I even got really upset during a GP appt. my gp gave me a cuddle and was more concerned over my mental health. Can anyone help me I am a nervous wreck for no reason

    Hi Sk345,

    Welcome to our forum.

I'm so glad to hear that antibiotics have solved the problem and, that 4 doctors have diagnosed cystic acne. Your GP can prescribe something to reduce the itch. In my experience, when something is itching, this is a sign of healing, so there's no need for all your stressing.

It is not at all unusual for our mental helth to suffer when we don't know what we are facing, but this should subside now that you've got the all clear. If you still cannot put this behind you, have a chat with your GP. There are courses to help people move on in situations like this. Mindfullness, yoga and Tai-Chi can also help you to relax and get on with your life. If none of these help, your GP could possibly prescribe an anti-depressant for a short time. Naturally, they are not too keen to do this and, this is only a last resort.

I sincerely hope that you can put this behind you and realise how lucky you are to get this diagnosis. There is enough to worry about in these extraordinary times without doing so unecessarily.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
