enlarged lymph nodes - worried!

Hi all! Sorry if this is slightly long to read.

I'm 21, and female. In november, I noticed one of my lymph nodes in my neck was enlarged, without any other signs of illness. Shortly after my groin swelled up, and then I noticed another in my neck was enlarged too. The groin 'swelling' seemed to go down, I occasionally worried about the ones in my neck, but didn't do anything about it. Since november, I have been getting increasingly tired, however this comes and goes. Some days I am fine, other days I am exhausted, and it is completely unrelated to how much sleep i've got! One in particular on my neck seemed to be growing larger, and I then noticed I could actually still feel the one in my groin. I've also seemed to have slightly tender side of my breast, on one particular side, which comes and goes too. I don't know if this is related.

I finally went to my GP on monday, and she examined me and found some more  - another in my neck, one above my collar bone, and another in the other side of my groin. So in total I have 6, that I know of. I'm also convinced another one has swelled up in my armpit since I saw her, but I don't know if this is stress related? The day it felt swollen, the side of my breast on that side was also tender to touch (the opposite to where it has previously been sore). I've also seemed to have developed a 'tight chest' feeling and a chesty cough when I breathe in deeply since seeing her, after she pressed down on my stomach and told me to inhale/exhale, but then again, maybe its always been there/ is stress related? I'm just noticing it now?
I had a chest x-ray this morning, have a CT scan on my neck in just under 2 weeks, and blood tests in about 3 weeks. I feel a bit confused to be honest, I know they're testing 'to rule out' cancer, but what does this actually mean? a specific type of cancer? any cancer? I don't really understand the stages of diagnosis, and how likely really is this to be cancer? I don't think I've had any significant weight loss, and I definitely have not had night sweats to the point I've drenched the sheets, i've woken up hotter than usual some nights but that could be a whole range of things.

I know lymphoma can cause enlarged lymph nodes - does anyone know if 6 palpable nodes is a bad sign? The one in my neck that I had originally noticed seems to feel quite hard and doesn't move, but my GP did say the ones in my groin area are movable and so that is more 'promising'. I'm trying to stay positive but the worry is really eating away at me, at a time where i'm trying to write my university dissertation too!

Any kind of insight/opinion would be really helpful/appreciated, its driving me crazy!

EDIT: I also had glandular fever 2 years ago, so we know it isn't this.

  • Hey

i know it's really hard to not stop touching it because till thsi day I still touch that area where mine are but you shouldn't prod it for some time because if it is warm and some what tender on its own then I feel like it's a better chance it's something that is not sinister.

the appointment waiting time is disgusting I legit wouldn't wish on it on my worst enemy but once those bloods get done the results will come back in 2-7 days it just depends on your doctor or GP.

I feel like the best way to understand your body when it comes to lymph nodes is if you touch the area you think is swollen and touch the other side parallel to it and if it's the same it's fine if not you are getting checked which means you are in good hands.

Keep us updated and if you have any questions ask this forum because even if I can't answer it others might be able to.

  • Hey everyone!

Just leaving an update from me as there are a few new posts and maybe it will be reassuring for someone?

I've had multiple ultrasound scans, and most recently and trans-vaginal ultrasound because I have enlarged, reactive lymph nodes in my goin and pelvis. I think the largest was 0.6cm.

They're all still there, but my last ultrasound showed them the same size as when they last checked a couple of months ago, and as 'old' reactive nodes.

I can still feel them under my skin, which I do find disconcerting, but I think at this point I just have to trust the dr's judgement and accept that maybe they'll just always be there now.

It's been 6 months since I first noticed them, and they've not gotten noticeably bigger. I still have no clue why they are there in the first place. I didn't have any kind of infection that I was aware of, but the body can be weird I guess, especially in times of severe stress.

  • Hey,

ive just come on here to check in with you.
Have you had your ultrasound yet?
    has the lump disappeared?

  • Hey,

just wanted to come on here to know how you are getting on cx

  • Hey,

  • Heyy,

    Yes and no...

So after my CT scan they told me they didn't see any signs of cancer which I can't even describe how happy I was!! However I had an enlarged pulmonary artery which is abnormal.. So after another week or so of fresh worries, I was then transferred to a cardiologist who ran some more tests on my heart and found that the issue with the artery is congenital so I've had it all my life! I'm honestly so relieved but can't believe I went through 4 weeks of hell from that haha

The reason I also say no is because I still have swellings above my collar bone and swollen tonsils and have a few weird small grape type lumps above and below my breasts kind of on the flatter rib areas and a raised area under my left armpit and obviously these aren't explained from what they found.

I plan to go back to the docs to get those all checked still and get to the bottom of It but I guess the good news is, hopefully because I had a clear CT scan, most serious issues have been ruled out anyway! :)

Hope everyone else is okay and the waiting is by far the worst part! Xx

  • Hi Wooze,

This sounds like good news, although I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had any answers about your other symptoms. I hope that your doctor will be able to find a solution for these.

Do you need any further checks or treatment for your heart?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on with your doctor.
    Kind regards,

  • Hi all,

I'm in a similar boat to most here and was wondering if anyone could offer any experience/advice/anything of the sort because like everyone else I'm worried to death.

I'm a 25 year old male and noticed quite a large (1 inch) oval shaped lump between my jaw and collarbone about 2 months ago that is moveable. Until I started googling symptoms I pretty much didn't have any of the common ones. The doctor initially told me all was fine, I went back and had blood tests that were all clear, got sent for an ultrasound and GP again unclear what it was so was referred to Maxillofacial. After an examination he said possible Lymphoma and I have an MRI, CT and Core Biopsy in the coming 2 weeks.

Obviously I'm terrified, the consultant seemed to be very direct which I appreciate, and of course cancer is the worst case scenario which is why he would mention that and nothing else, of course worst case scenario is the main focus.

I'm just a bit lost, stressed and not sure what to do with myself. Any experience or advice would be welcome!

    Thanks everyone
