Is this throat cancer? Please help, I am terrified!

Hello, I hope someone will advise me because I am so scared that I have throat cancer that I can't sleep or perform any of my daily activities anymore, because this is all I think about. I am a 19 year old male.

I had an on and off sore throat and hoarseness for many many months, but was a smoker, so didn't think too much about it. However, I quit around two months ago and not long after that the sore throat and hoarseness started again and continue to this day. Furthermore, During the last month I developed difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing. Not only does food sometimes feels like it sticks to my throat when swallowing, I have difficulty performing the swallowing action itself, even when I only have saliva in my moath. It's as if my muscles are harder to contract or something. The breathing problems feel as if something is blocking the air flow and I need to put extra effort in if I want to take a deep breath. Furthermore, my chest often hurts when I swallow. During the past few days, I developed this constant urge to clear my throat, but it is impossible to do so no matter how much I try. It's as if something is stuck there.

I have been told I have acid reflux before. I saw 2 GPs about this problem in the last weeks and both of them didn't even bother to look at me after learning that I have a history of acid reflux, they just gave me some omeprozol and told me not to come back for a month.

The symptoms seem far too severe for a simple thing like acid reflux, especially since I have been living with it for a few years and never had anything this bad. I have found online that these symptoms are consistent with throat ir esophagus cancers and now am in absolute panic mode. I cannot sleep or focus on anything else but the thoughts of cancer and dying.

Therefore, I have the following questions:

Is it possible that acid reflux would cause symptoms so severe?

How likely is it to be cancer?

What else could be causing this?

And finally, how fast are these types if cancer? How risky is it to wait the month for an appointment? Because all I can think about is how the cancer is growing and spreading and how it will be to late by the time anyone actually tests me.

  • Hello Debbie.

im in the same situation. Past 11 months I thought I had a viral infection due to sore throat. Very dry mouth. Night sweats. Feeling something was stuck in my throat. Hard to swallow. Difficultly breathing. lumps in my neck. But.. my doctors kept saying it was acid reflux.

Medication after medication. Nothing changed. Tried even saying it was the medication that was making me have symptoms. I gave up and threated them to take them to the papers if they didn't refer me.

After 6 months of completely ***. I said I want to be referred to the hospital.

had a scan on my neck. Saying that I had swollen lymph nodes. Which can be due to viral infection. They put it down as infection. Which was full of crap as haven't been poorly in ages.

Then has a camera down my nose into my throat to see a big fat tumour sat there. And he was very unhappy with the doctors who just kept saying it was acid.

now I had an mri today. And also my operation to remove it. And it's getting tested for mouth cancer.

what was the out come of yours if you don't mind.

    thanks

    Libb!

  • Hiya,

I have all the same symptoms and I also have swollen lymph nodes in my neck. No sign of infection, I don't feel unwell just very weak and tiered all the time. I have a hiatus hernia and was diagnosed when I was 16 (24 now) never had an issue with it and for the last 4 months I have had all these new symptoms which the ent said was because of my acne! What a load of crap! I don't even have acne, I have spots because of my poxy mask! I am having an mri as one of my tonsils has swollen and the other hasn't. But I feel like they aren't taking me seriously!

  • hi, i sort of have the same thing and i'm worried. i think i have acid reflux but i'm not sure. i don't want to see a doctor because i'm too young to go by myself and i don't want my mum to find out i used to smoke. my tonsils are swollen and have been since around august 2020. it feels like there is something suck at the back of my tongue. do you think it could be from the same thing. i haven't been diagnosed with anxiety because i never really speak up about it but i do feel anxious all the time. i'm seriously worried.

  • Hi

I am sick regularly and have lost a stone doctors keep telling my anxiety is causing it but this is causing me anxiety now this lump has appeared and Iv been in tears I really don't know what to do.

Any reply means a lot x

  • Hi, just wanted to ask how are you doing? Did the results come back ok? Pls let me know, I hope you're doing well!

  • Hi just wanted to ask, did you find out what the lump was? Please let me know, I hope you're doing well.

  • This is really interesting as I'm a Crohn's patient with the same symptoms. It's not constant and it's not even consistent - certain foods can be fine one day and not the next! I described it to the doctors in hospital as being like the epiglottis (but between the windpipe and foodpipe) is spasming and stopping me swallowing or doing anything except regurgitating the food. I can't even drink water when it happens but I've found carbonated drinks help little bit. They say acid reflux and I've been referred for a barium swallow. Is that what you had when you were diagnosed? How has your treatment gone since? I'm also concerned by the sheer amount of weight I've gained recently which they reassured me usually rules out Cancer, so fingers crossed I guess! ‍♀️

  • Hi

im currently waiting on surgery, I am having a 2.5cm by 2.5cm cyst removed from my throat had my pre op 3 week ago, they said it doesn't look like it is anything bad but I am still worried. I will keep you updated, I knew I wasnt imagining things and kept pushing for a scan in which it is where they found the cyst.
    many thanks for your reply
