Been referred to Breast Clinic and freaking out...

Hi all,

I'm sure there are lots of messages like this one, but I thought I'd post a message anyway as it seems like a good place to vent my worry without unnecessarily alarming other people in my life!

I went to see my GP yesterday as my right breast has been feeling a bit tender lately. My breasts are quite naturally lumpy but recently it's felt like there is an area of my breast which is more solid than the rest. I don't know why, but I kind of expected the GP to say it was nothing and for me to carry on with the rest of my day as usual. Instead as soon as I mentioned slight pain in my right breast her general demeanour went from bright and breezy to serious and concerned. She asked me if I had any family history of breast cancer, and I told her my grandmother had it (she passed away from breast and lung cancer aged 68). I also remembered after my appointment that my mother's cousin had it, although my mum and aunt are fine (at least so far). She examined my breast, and although I hadn't actually mentioned finding any lumps she immediately found the place that I had identified myself. She said she wasn't sure if it was a lump, or just a nodule as my breasts are quite nodular, but she would refer me to a breast clinic for screening. She would recommend all available tests. She said she thought they would want to see me "very quickly". So as you can imagine I left the GP surgery alarmed. I also got a call from the hospital the same day (yesterday) to arrange an appointment - which also alarmed me as I figured they had prioritised me because they suspected it was cancer.

The appointment is for a week on monday. I'm not sure if I can wait that long because psychologically I'm already finding it very tough.

This year is a very big one for me as I'm getting married in three months. The wedding is abroad, everything's already organised, many people have booked their flights and accommodation. Me and my fiance are planning our life together. I can't imagine everything being disrupted by a breast cancer diagnosis.

More than that, I can't imagine trying to face breast cancer if that is the diagnosis. The GP said I should try not to worry, and that most cases are benign, but I am upset that I was referred so quickly.

I tried to talk to my Mum about it, especially as my stepdad is a retired doctor, but both of them immediately dismissed it by saying if I have any pain the likelihood is that it's not anything serious. My boyfriend is being very understanding, and saying that if it's serious we can postpone the wedding, we'll do whatever it takes. But I already have a lot going on in my life and I'm struggling to imagine the possibility, however unlikely, of taking breast cancer on as well.

How do people cope with this? I don't want to mention it to friends as I don't have a diagnosis of anything yet. But at the same time I find it hard to socialise etc as normal with this dread hanging over me.

  • Thank you . I know they are doing it for the right reasons and I am grateful just scared!  Just go to wait for the letter now x

    Hi Kellybelash,

This is probably one of the worst times of anyone's cancer journey. Try to keep yourself busy while you are waiting. This doesn't all have to be work, do involve yourself with more pleasurable pursuits too.

Are you expecting to get your test results on the day, because this doesn't usually happen. It normally takes 1-2 weeks to get these results, so you still have some waiting to do.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I went to my appointment today I saw the consultant he said it was movable and smooth which is good but sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound on the lump. The mammogram was clear on both breasts which is good. The ultrasound on the lump was inconclusive as the position it is in made it hard for the lady to get a clear picture. I had to have a biopsy of the lump as it wasn't clear if it's a cyst attached to muscle or if it's a mass in the breast tissue of my armpit. I have a telephone appointment next Thursday for the results as they are trying to keep people out of the hospital.

    Hi Kelbelash,

I am glad to hear that you saw the consultant today and have had some tests. I am glad to hear that you are getting the results of thesetests so soon.

Please let us know how you get on then.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Rachel, it turned out to just be mastitis in my case x

  • Hello,

I've come across this forum after just leaving the Drs after being referred to the breast clinic.

I've read every comment and just want to say what a great job your doing Jolamine. Your constant reassurance and replies are lovely.

So hers my story, I check my breast regularly. Last night I was laying in bed and felt a lump in my left boob to the right of my nipple. I'd say about the size of a 2p coin in width. First thing I done this morning is ring the Drs and had an app. She had a feel and told me not to worry. Everyone is referred?? And I shouldn't worry because my nipple isnt inverted? Is this right? I've no symptoms whatsoever. No pain etc. Just the lump?

    Thanks in advance. Xx

  • Hi

I was referred last week and had my appointment yesterday. My doctor said they are referring everyone at the moment due to people being scared to attend the doctors due to covid.

I had a biopsy done on my lump yesterday but only because the tech could not get a good look at the lump in my armpit due to its position. My mammogram was clear and I have no other symptoms either apart from the lump. Hope you get your appointment through soon. I've got to wait for my results now.

  • Hi AJohn,

Thank you so much for you kind comments. I was scared witless when I was first diagnosed and, I got such tremendous support fropm people on this site, that it prompted me to try and repay some of the great kindness that I received at that time.

I see that this is your first post on our forum so first and foremost welcome, although I'm sorry to hear your reason for joining us. Due to the current pandemic, many people are being referred straight to the breast clinic. This is a good thing in some ways, as it means that they are getting the definitive tests they need to get an accurate diagnosis.
Most cancerous breast lumps are painless, so they can easily be overlooked. I am glad that your GP doesn't think that yours is anything to worry about. Under ordinary circumstances, only 1 person in every 8 referred will get a positive diagnosis. I suspect  that the odds might be even better at the moment, with more people being referred. You will normally be seen within 2 weeks. I don't know what age you are. Younger people usually have dense breasts, so don't always have a mammogram. You are likely to have a chat with your consultant first, then an examination of your breasts.

You may then have an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. It normally takes 1-2 weeks for the results of these tests to come back. Your consultant will discuss these findings with his/her MDT (multidisciplinary team) before you get your results. If you are unfortunate enough to need treatment of any type, the consultant will tell you what the team has decided would be best for you.

Waiting to get your results is a very anxious time, but I sincerely hope that you are one of the fortunate people who get "the all clear".

Do please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Kelbelash,

I am glad to hear that you had your tests yesterday. It is good to hear that your mammogram was clear and, I hope that your biopsy doesn't show anything untoward.

Please keep in touch and let us know the outcome of your biopsy.

I have my fingers crossed for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
