would a doctor say you have cancer before biopsy results ?

Hi there

My Mum is currently in hospital. She has been there for two weeks. She has blood clots on both lungs and pain in her stomach, enlarged Lymph nodes in lungs and stomach. They did an Endoscopy on her stomach a week ago and tissue was taken for biopsy. They said the biopsy results would be back in two weeks time. Two days after the endoscopy, two doctors have told my Mum they 'think' she has either Lymphatic cancer or stomach cancer. How can they say this to someone without biopsy results ? Has anybody else had this happen to them ? She is going for a PET scan next tuesday.

Thanks for any advice

    Hi Millie,

Welcome to the forum. I am glad to hear that you have had some reassurance from reading this thread. Sometimes your consultant will be pretty sure that you need treatment, even before they get the results of your tests. This happened to me too. I expect that when someone is dealing with cancer day in day out, it must almost become second nature to know which are cancerous and which are benign. Still, you cannot be sure until you get your results on Wednesday. They will tell you then what type of breast cancer you have and what grade it is.

Don't be phased by the speed with which everything happens at this stage. This is perfectly normal. Try to keep yourself busy this week to distract yourself from the wait.

Can you bring someone with you to your appointment? It is always a good idea to do this, especially when you are going for results. If you have any questions for the consultant, jot them down. This way you won't forget to ask them in the heat of the moment.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I shall be thinking of you on Wednesday and am keeping my fingers crossed.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Millie,

I am glad to hear that your partner will be with you. It makes such a diference to have someone there, especially if it turns out to be bad news. You will find it useful to have a list of any questions you wish to put to the consultant.

I am keeping well at present with my breast cancer. I go back to see the plastic surgeon for review of 2 melanoma sites on Tuesday. Both were clear on biopsy, so I'm hoping that it will still be good news.

I shall be thinking of you on Wednesday and, hope that it all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I i Jolamine,

  • Hello, am sorry to hear its not cureable. I had my results today and i have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, luckily it hasn't affected the lymph nodes and will start chemotherapy. Wishing you all the best.

    Hi Millie,

I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Did they say when you would be starting chemo and, how may sessions you will have?

I saw the plastic surgeon yesterday and he was happy with my biopsy wounds. You can hardly see the one on my face, but the one on my leg is quite obvious. He told me that this will take up to a year to heal completely. Still, he was happy enough that there is no further cancer present.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, thank you. I need to have a CT scan waiting for that to come through, see the oncologist to discuss the treatment demanding on one of the biopsy result that was still outstanding when i went on Wednesday, more waiting though my consultant said it'll be mid August. What type of cancer do you have if you don't mind me? Am pleased to hear your healing well, your body needs to recover slowly.

    Send positivity.
