Really concerned... one swollen tonsil and other symptoms.

Hi all,

I'm new here…

I don't really know what I am looking for coming on here to chat, as I know none of you will be able to diagnose me… I guess I'm just looking for somewhere to vent and see if anyone can shed any light at all on my situation and what I am experiencing. It'd be great to hear from others who have been in similar circumstances :)

I'm 22 years old, and have been suffering for the past 2 months with an array of symptoms, which I believe could be either lymphoma or tonsil cancer. I have no risk factors for tonsil cancer (I don't smoke or drink and I am well under the age bracket) however I do for lymphoma (I had gladular fever when I was 18 and my great aunt has had lymphoma, although I realise this is not an immediate family member)

Firstly, I noticed one day whilst brushing my teeth that my right tonsil was hugely larger than the other. It takes up I would say a third of my throat, and is hard to the touch. At the time, it was not painful and this was the only symptom I had experienced. I had been aware that my tonsil was larger than the other a few months before I started worrying about this so I have no idea how long it has been this way (although the first time I noticed it, it wasn't as big as it is now.) So of course as many do, I took to my best friend/worst enemy Google, and immediately found all sorts of horrible things this could be. Everything pointed at tonsil cancer or lymphoma due to the asymmetry in my tonsils… and so I then went to see my GP straight away.

He sent me away for a week to see if it went down on its own… it did not. I went back the week after and he put me on a course of antibiotics which did nothing to take down the swelling apart from making me really sick. He then took some blood tests and all my blood counts came back fine, except I was low on iron and B12 which he has prescribed me a 6 month course of tablets for. He referred me to an ENT however, as he could see how worried I was about this.

I do not have private healthcare so this referral was through the NHS, unfortunately after 3 weeks the appointment had still not come through, so I decided I really could not wait any longer and so booked myself in to see a private ENT consultant whom I used to see when I was younger for ear problems. I decided to pay for this. During this 3 week wait, I started to develop some more symptoms. My ears are very painful, and I feel like there is a constant pressure on them and on my neck and jaw (it is hard to explain). It has been quite intense and painful and difficult to ignore. I also keep feeling like my heart is stopping? (I know its not) as though someone is sitting on my chest and I cant catch my breath quickly enough. My GP said this could be due to my low iron however as this is a symptom of anemia. I have no swollen lymph nodes, however I did have one that was quite painful under my arm but that seems to have gone down now...

The ENT took a look at my tonsils and asked me lots of questions about my symptoms. He also felt my neck and head for swollen nodes but said they felt normal. He said I did the right thing by going to see him, and that he did not think my tonsils indicated anything sinister but that I should schedule a tonsillectomy just incase. I am due to have my tonsils out in 3 weeks, and they will send them for tests which will take a week to know if it is malignant or not.

I am super worried, and this is causing me unbelievable amounts of anxiety and stress. I am constantly miserable and cant help but think the absolute worst, especially now the pressure on my ears and jaw is constantly there, it is a constant reminder of how ill I feel. Whilst I know that realistically, the pressure and soreness in my ears, throat and jaw could be unrelated to my tonsils, I cant help but think that this is definitely cancer. I also realise that I do not have the classic symptoms of any swollen lymph nodes either so I could be overreacting for nothing.

I would just really like to hear from anyone who can possibly relate to how anxious Im feeling waiting to find out what is wrong, and anyone who has been in a similar situation. I cant talk to my family or boyfriend about how I feel as they just tell me im being crazy and fob me off. They're not interested at all especially my mum. :(

If you made it all the way through this horrifically long post, thank you! I wish you all the best, and thanks in advance for any help.

  • I've been having the same problems....noticed enlarged tonsil...went to see gp they did full blood count and all was fine....since then ive noticed a small red and white spot come up behind my enlarged tonsil and my throats is sore on and off scratchy sore. Also feeling like I had a lump in my throat like I have a muscus cold? I am due to see gp again on the 2nd June. It's been like this for about 8 weeks now.

  • Since having my tonsils removed ( I’m in my 50’ and the op and recovery were nowhere near as bad as some of the stuff you read online) I’ve found out loads of people have one tonsil bigger than the other and it’s not cancer !

i wouldn’t worry- I just think some of us tonsils that get infected too easily and we are better off without them . I’ve not found anyone who has had the op who wasn’t pleased with their throats health afterwards .

  • i there, for the last 6 weeks i have had the same issue  I think - a feeling like a lump in my throat on my right side. No pain, no problem swallowing. It also feels a little dry if that makes sense, and its worse when I work out with open mouth breathing. There is also a little pressure under my ear on that side. I think my tonsil is bigger on that side although I don't think its inflamed as its not red. I did call my doctor but with the virus he can't tell over the phone so he put me on 250mg per day AZ on Friday (no change so far) and has an ultrasound and bloodwork scheduled for this Friday. Meanwhile i am worried as to what it could be. I do have post nasal drip in the winter and am in perimenopause... Any ideas? My mind goes to cancer of course...

  • I'm so happy for you about your outcome! I know it was a little while ago now but never the less! I'm happy I have found your forum as I've been struggling over the last month and so with an enlarged tonsil on the right, I've also been getting pain in my neck and behind my ear. They done a swab and I've been given antibiotics for it as they said that it was infected. The antibiotics has done nothing to help me with the pain or the swelling but was told to give it a week after finishing the antibiotics to see if it would then go down. But almost a week on I've been getting night sweats every night and been ever so tired (I can never nap during the day and I keep napping! The only time I've ever done this was when I had glandular fever a couple of years ago which lasted 10 months before my bloods went back to normal!) going to call the doctors again tomorrow and hope they may be able to help me but worries me even more with the whole Coronavirus going on at the moment... hope your well keeping safe and well x

  • ok got my ultrasound and bloodwork .. nothing. But he said he could tell from the photo my tonsil is raised. So I need to see an ENT but right now they arent doing appointments cos of the virus.. so i have to hope its not cancer.. and wait.!!!

  • Hi

    Hi!

have you managed to get an ENT appointment yet?

my 2 year old has been referred for an urgent appointment through the doctor, she has 1 massive tonsil that just crosses the middle of her mouth. I've been going to the doctors about it for 3 months now and after 2 lots of antibiotics and steroids she now has an urgent ENT referral which I have been told will be in the next week or 2! Her other symptoms are a swollen gland on the same side, she started snorting really deeply and continuously about 3 weeks ago and in the last week she has started coughing every time she eats and drinks (as if she is trying to clear her throat), her appetite is going and she keeps complaining of tummy ache (although she's 2, so I'm not sure if I believe her...anything to get out of eating her veg!). She had some bloods done last week and her red blood cells are low and the doctor said if she gets a temperature between now and her appointment, then I have to take her straight to a&e which really worries me...do they think it's something serious?

I'm so glad I found this thread, everything I read online is cancer cancer cancer which scares me! I'm guessing from what people have said she will have to have her tonsils out, which in the current climate with the coronavirus also scares me! I'm hoping this appointment comes through quick!
    stay safe! X

  • Nope nothing.. they arent taking appointments right now so who knows. I just have to hope its nothing!!

  • Hi I think what you have to remember is that if the doctors suspected it was something nasty you would still be seen as an emergency! There are still normal procedures going on at hospital, but have to be priorities ops and procedures. My partner is in tomorrow for a op....not that its throat related but it's a minor op and is very much needed.

I have all symptoms...my right tonsil is very enlarged had been fir over a year! Ear pain, feeling like lump in throat, sometimes feels funny to swallow. Sore throat. It took about 4 attempts at doctors to get him to send me to a ENT. Obviously after he had done bloods which all came back fine.Waited about 3 months but got seen in February's and got the all clear...its enlarge due to allergy..globus sensation.....narrowed nasal passage on right side and something else which I cant remember what it's called but nothing bad. Thank goodness.

  • Hello, I'm really interested to read about the allergy link. My 6yr old son has been a snorer for most of his life and has been on a waiting list to see ENT for possible sleep apnea for around 5 months.  He has recently been complaining of feeling something "stuck" when he swallows (absolutely no other symptoms), so when I checked I noticed that one of his tonsils reaches right the way across to touch the uvula (dangly bit in the middle). Of course, Google has filled me with horrors and I phoned my doctor who said that it's probably just a virus but to contact them again in 3 weeks if not gone down.

Anyway, back to my allergy link. I've also noticed that he has been sneezing in his sleep only recently too - he doesn't have a cold but I suspected allergies. I didn't realise there may be a possible link between this and a physical increase in tonsil size? I don't suppose you can elaborate on what was said to you?

    Charlotte

  • Hi charlotte. To be honest with you that's all the ENT said to me that I also have rhinosinsitus in my right nostril which could be from allergies.....such as pollen, dust, I was also thinking I do burn alot of candle at home the scented ones which also could affect it? He said that I could have naturally a large tonsil on the right side to?  Along with the globus sensation. He wrote me a letter of discharge just explaining what was said at the appointment and no more follow up needed. And advised that I used a nasal spray so I bought Benadryl. Which to be honest hasn't really worked and maybe it's just something that I will have to learn to live with? I feel alot more at ease after having the reassurance from the ent that all is ok and nothing nasty foong on. As I must admit I used google and it scared me to death and was convinced that it was something nasty! Hope you get it sorted for your son.
