Possible womb cancer ?

Recently has a transvaginal scan which showed a 5.1 endometrial thickening after menopause. Specialist tried to do two procedures to get a biopsy but they couldn’t get through the cervix. Now have to go to hospital as an in patient. Really scared. Has anyone had similar experiences ?

  • When I was at the hospital on Friday (where they tried the procedures), the specialist said she was going to request the inpatient appointment and I should be offered something within 2 weeks. I’m not sure if that means I will actually get the procedure during the next 2 weeks? I go on holiday on 14th so I’m hoping they organise it in time, otherwise I’ll have to tell them I’m away.  You must be in agony with your arm !

  • Hopefully you will hear something soon but as its a general you are having it might not be as quick as an outpatient appointment.

My arm is definitely annoying me now, I’ve had 5 weeks of sleeping on my back, the first 3 weeks in the recliner chair, after hysterectomy they also advise to sleep on your back for a few weeks…I usually sleep on my side so it’s not going well..hubby has decamped to the spare room as I just fidget all night, got some sleeping tablets which help but knowing I’m going to have to sleep like this again when I have my arm op is just doing my head in.

  • Hi

    In a very similar position.

Will be having a hystercopy on the tenth of October.

I had a five day period which came as a surprise at my age,

scan showed lining was 5mm,doctor wasn't unduly concerned but was advised to have hystercopy to rule cancer out.

I'm being positive and staying away from Dr Google, crocheting as a distraction.

Hope you don't have to wait too long.

  • Thanks for sharing, its good to know that other people are in the same position as me. I hope all goes well on 10th. I need to be a bit more positive too and stop Googling - it’s definitely bringing on panic attacks and anxiety. So grateful for your reply x

  • Hi, I had a TV ultrasound last week and was told the thickness of my uterus was 5.3mm which she said was high normal. My GP said that I would probably need a hysteroscopy and biopsy but said I could be waiting some weeks for a gynaecologist appointment as I had not had any post menopausal bleeding. I couldn’t bear the thought if waiting that long for a first appointment so I have booked a private appointment with a gynaecologist for next week. I was going to ask for a hysteroscopy with a local anaesthetic but after your experience think I will ask for a full anaesthetic. The last smear tests I have had were very uncomfortable so think I may experience similar problems. I have read that it is unlikely to be cancer if the uterus thickness is less than 5.5mm so trying to remain hopeful until I get the biopsy results.  My uterus thickness was only 3mms in April 3020 so very worried why it has increased by 2.3mm in the last 27 months. I am hoping it is just polyps but think these would have been seen on the TV ultrasound.

  • Thank you so much for the reply and glad you got a private appointment. I can only speak from my experience but I’m glad they have offered me the anaesthetic option next because the pain was so bad. She did say I had atrophy so that probably played a part in the pain issue. The consultant said that at 5.1 she wasn’t too concerned but it’s protocol to do the biopsy. Apparently polyps usually just show up as thickening and not always as distinct images on the TV ultrasound (I’m no expert but I’ve been reading-up on some research papers). Thanks again for sharing I’m so grateful people have replied. We need to all keep in touch on here.

  • Thanks for your reply, the news about the polyps has given me some reassurance. Hope you don’t have to wait too long for your next appointment and that it is good news when you get your results. Thee are some other ladies on the forum awaiting biopsies and results so fingers crossed that we all get some good results.

  • I’ve had quite a few hysteroscopies and can honestly say whilst a little uncomfortable they never really bothered me, I also had one by a general as the polyps were in a difficult place to remove.  I have never found smears particularly comfortable..the nursing staff who are there with you when they do the hysteroscopy are very good at keeping you distracted, I was so busy wittering on it was all over before I knew it.

Perhaps I was just lucky that I managed to have so many done without a problem as I usually have a very low pain threshold.

Hope your results are all normal when they come back x

  • I think my thickening (both times) was due to the polyps, thru are very common and usually benign..I was unlucky that one of my polyps contained atypia hyperplasia so my recommended treatment was the hystetectomy I had last week…i am feeling much better though as I head into week 2 of recovery

  • Thank you so much for replying and for your reassurance. The sonographer said she couldn’t see anything on the TV ultrasound so obviously concerned. Please can I ask were your polyps seen initially on the TV ultrasound?
