Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Thank you - so kind of you to reply

  • Meant to add. The prep can be “ challenging “ my advice.

Keep it cold , add some cordial ( not red !) Baby wipes as the constant wiping can leave your anus very sore.  Ditto Vaseline ( self explanatory) and stay very close to the toilet.  Once it starts it’s literally like fluid gushing out of a tap. You barely have time to get to the loo.    oh and a light diet /fasting between now and your procedure.

    Good luck.

  • I've got the scope in the afternoon and the Moviprep leaflet says to take the first dose before bed and the second in the morning. Am I going to get any sleep in between doses?!

  • Mine was at 6 pm. I took my first dose at 4 pm the previous day. It had worn off by bedtime and I got a reasonable nights sleep. Took 2nd dose at 06:00 Found it worked almost immediately and wore off around lunch time.

  • So helpful - thank you. Sounds like it will be more likely the nerves that keep me awake :(

  • Google is the worst thing to look at. I made that mistake!!

    It could be absolutely anything.

  • I agree Steve, is so hard to resist I think doing it..but Bel-Ci it could be anything at all as symptoms do seem to be common with a variety of conditions..not too long to wait to find out.best of luck with the prep and hope all goes well on Friday

  • Thanks so much Helen and Steve.
The strange thing is that now I’ve started the bowl prep and had my pre-op assessment a weird sense of calm has descended a little bit. I guess it’s because the waiting is the worst and at least now I feel like I’m doing something and I’m going to find out what it is I need to tackle.

  • Hi Bel-Ci

wishing you lots of luck for tomorrow.
I hope the first dose of prep has been ok so far- I know it probably feels like it will never end but I managed to get a good nights sleep with no need to go to toilet overnight.
Tomorrow morning might be a little more unpleasant in terms of taste but you’ll be fine. I ended up vomiting a lot of second dose up ( to be honest I think it was just because tummy was empty and it was so early in morning!) but still had a good prep according to the consultant who performed my colonoscopy.

sending you positive vibes and best wishes! X

  • Thanks so much Thistle79. The prep is definitely an experience... I've got a nice cup of peppermint tea as well.

Luckily my husband is being lovely and is going to look after me tomorrow. Really appreciate your best wishes x
