Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Fingers crossed its all fine for you sue.

  • When you drink the fluid to clear your bowels out do not stray to far from a toilet. Believe me I'm talking from experience! When the solids have gone it's literally water and no amount of clenching is keeping it in!!

  • Thank you..sounds very good advice!!

  • What’s the screwing, is it a CT scan? My husband had that 26 Aug and still waiting for results, he’s just finished the first half of the drink and says it’s revolting, a little bit more at 6pm x

  • Screening appointment is by phone when they talk yoi through things and ask questions..guess it is to make sure you suitable for a colonoscopy and what happens at it..what is the drink for? X

  • Thank you so much Steve for your reply..Google def making me paranoid especially stories about people having bowel or colon cancer and no symptoms...I know what you mean re alcohol as when I do have a lot...not that I do often...but I go to the loo a lot the day after and can get a tiny bit of blood but that's pretty rare..hard to think back to remember specifics as don't track things..

It's going to be a long wait till Friday then another long wait for procedure and each day just full of worrying!!

  • I found that talking to people helped me and the last 3 or 4 days before my colonoscopy I never looked on the net. The colonoscopy is ok ir didn't hurt but I was sedated and I'd recommend it. It was over in about 20 minutes.

Speaking of people on here was a help as well. Just chatting to people who are in the same situation or have been through it was a massive help.

Let us know how you get on.

  • hi Steve, i think you're right and talking on here is helping me.. i do wonder how you are all know the scores from your test? all i had in the letter from the NHS was that blood was found in my sample but no other information... the drink you have, is that as a replacement for an enema/suppository which my partner had when he had a test about 5 years ago..he was able to do that at home. What happens now?

Glad you have had a good result and what they found for you must have come as a massive relief...

  • Ahh thanks Helen’s, we went to see the surgeon for that little chat, he also examined him. I’m dreading getting the results back though. He has 3 other cancers maybe that’s why we see the surgeon. The drink is to empty your bowl (and yes it’s working lol) so they can see and get a good picture.
Yes Steve I find talking really helps, I’ve joined 2 groups but not posted anything, just reading and it’s all so scary, just hoping I can leave them very soon. Fingers crossed Helen Xx

  • hi sue, i do hope the news is good for him.. thank you for replying to me... like you i'm finding this all so scary.... and it has come out of the blue for me - this time on Thursday i was living in blissful ignorance - but getting the letter on friday has sent me all over the place...and i'm of course thinking the worst... fingers crossed all goes well for your husband, and you xx
