Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hiya Amanda, sorry you been having a rough time..hopefully tomorrow onwards you will find out some news and then what they'll do to sort out the pain..

Has been a bit of a long wait for me but days seem to be going quickly towards my surgery.. dreading it as well as wanting it done..very weird feeling...am scared of having an anaesthetic as not had one for over 25 years and I am worried about how painful it will be afterwards..I also am very active and exercise every day and know I'll have to take things at a slower and gentler pace...xx

  • Hopefully you'll hear soon Mark after tomorrow when all xmas/new year is out of the way...I do def agree with Steve and staying off Google..altho it is so easy to do...

  • Hope all goes well Helen  think the anxiety of the operation is usually worse than the reality  your fitness and exercise will benefit your recovery greatly

  • You might be making yourself ill with worry tbh. It's easy to get paranoid about the slightest thing. And I agree totally about the waiting about.

My gp actually told me my fit test was fine then the hospital rang me and told me it wasn't!

  • Interestingly Steve , my GP just said mine was raised then when I saw the actual number (20) and took the results to my consultant he wasn’t at all concerned.  Apparently the numbers can also vary depending on which lab is carrying out the test. Ie one labs normal could be 10. Another 15 and some of the testing is more sensitive than others.

I hope you get to speak to someone soon Mark and can get answers that will put your mind at ease. Stress and anxiety can cause  illness and you can do without that !

  • I had a conversation with my gp as he rung me to apologise about the receptionist telling me the wrong information. He said to me without actually saying to me if you know what I mean that my score wasn't really something to be to concerned about.

  • My GP didn't have the number of my FIT test..altho of course it would have been a high number..

  • Thanks Eve, I hope you're right..I've got a couple of people who've had the same operation and they're all fine so will ask them how it was...am definitely keeping up the exercise to hopefully help!

  • Hi everyone, I’m not sure where I am on this thread that’s what comes of going away and Christmas.
When is your operation Helen? Whenever it is I hope it goes well, the same to each and every one of you.

  • hi Sue, sorry bit of a delayed reply but not  been on email too much last few days - my operation is 2 weeks today, the 22nd - it is coming around quickly and although i'm worrying about it I am also fed up with worrying! i just would like it done and to be able to get back to normal.. Glad Mart is doing well and I hope you are too? xx
