Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I'll have a look at this.

  • Hiya..good luck for Saturday..hope the Kleen prep is better than Plenvu which is pretty horrible..sounds like you probably not got anything too bad with no symptoms so hopefully all will be OK..

  • As you said some while ago Steve this thread going on towards Christmas...over 70 pages now so is really good you started it..

  • It's certainly proven useful to a few people hasn't it lol. I guess it's a relief for those who've recently come across it to share their worries with people in the same position.

  • Hello

Sorry it’s been a while, life has been hectic! Thought I’d update you and get some bits out my head.

He was allowed home over a week ago, unfortunately he got an infection so ended up staying in for 10 days. But thankfully he’s all clear from that now and is doing so well. He’s got strong pain killers to take but he’s managing on paracetamol as he doesn’t want to become dependent on the strong stuff.

He’s managing to get up and about a bit, he gets tired very easily but that was to be expected.

The hospital rang us on Monday and gave us the results from the lab. Stage 3…. My heart sunk a bit hearing that. But they got it all. They took 30 lymph nodes out and they found evidence of cancer in 1 and also on the blood supply. The good news is that they have all been removed. But he does have to have chemotherapy.

He had Bloods taken on Monday and we will have to wait a couple of weeks until we meet his oncologist who will explain everything. All being well his treatment will start in January. As much as I am remaining positive that they are making sure anything that was trying to spread will be stopped, it just feels like more bad news. But I will wait until we meet the oncologist as there are so many questions,

Just makes me all the more grateful they caught it when they did as it was starting to spread! I’ve lost two close friends to Bowel Cancer so it’s hit pretty hard with his diagnosis, but feel so unbelievably lucky that he is lucky enough to fight it and come out the other side

  • Hiya, I was wondering only the other day how things were going..it is good operation was a success and infection all sorted out..think it must be about 3 weeks since his operation so is good paracetamol enough to manage on..

I have now my date for the same operation so have been wondering aka worrying about how painful it is after and how long to get over it..

Sounds so good they have caught it just in time and removed everything altho of course it must be so worrying to have heard the Staging news..thank goodness he has been treated now and not left things or delayed things..

Chemo I'm assuming just to complete everything to make sure all is OK..but sounds like they think they have got it all out but what a rollercoaster for you and such a worrying time..I won't know for at least 6 or 7 weeks from now what the results will be from my surgery so still a lot of time to worry.. but so many positives to be grateful for..

Hope you got lots of support as being strong for your husband is what I'm guessing you are doing..

  • Hiya..I've been finding this week hard but they rang today and surgery booked for 22nd Jan so 5 weeks more waiting but at least its now confirmed altho will be weeks of worrying xx

  • Any news yet from your CT scan? Xx

  • Hi Sue hope you both avoiding the bugs and enjoying the break and the sun too!! Xx

  • Glad you’ve got your date Helen. Something to aim for and get done and dusted.
