Mastitis, IBC or something else?!

So I went to the GP 10 days ago with a small lump under my nipple, just next to where I had a benign tumour removed in 2009. He referred me to the breast clinic, and over the week that small lump turned into a HUGE (orange sized) hardness encompassing my nipple and a triangular wedge shape in my under boob. He put me on antibiotics for lactational mastitis (I’ve not breastfed in 2 years) and after 5 days of no improvement I went back yesterday to have the antibiotics changed.
I’ve got the clinic on Saturday but I’m absolutely freaking out.

I had a heart condition diagnosed in May so I’m scared that it was the precursor to something horrible?! But I don’t see how it would have grown this much in 10 days…?! Also I had 3 CT scans when I was getting my heart diagnosed, the most recent one was about 6 weeks ago, could a tumour have appeared so fast?

I’m noticing swelling after I take my bra off, like a fluid pooling kind of thing…

a

Also a little warmth in the hard area. But no rash, itching, oozing etc.

Has anyone had these symptoms before with a positive outcome?

  • Hi Siananigans,

I am so sorry to hear this. I have had2 bouts of breast cancer within a year of one another. Like Laraj, I was told at my first appointments, both times, that it was likely to be cancer. That was 14 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. No matter how well prepared you think you are for news like this, it always comes as a shock. I am glad to hear that you have had all three tests carried out, so hopefully, you'll get a full diagnosis when you results come back. Here's hoping that you don't have too long to wait before you get your results.

Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for this. Waiting is harder than knowing, I think. Once I know I can plan and steel myself for battle! It’s great to hear you’re still enjoying life.

  • You are so right. most of us would agree that this is the worst part of our cancer journey - the not knowing is torture. Irrespective of the outcome, once you know, you can start to move forward.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • So I don’t know what to think now, as since my period has started, the pain and swelling has gone and the lumpiness is receding literally by the hour…would cancer do that?! Or is it more likely that it’s a hormonal thing?!

  • Hi Siananigans,

First of all, I must state that I am not a doctor, but this sounds hopeful. I don't see cancer subsiding like that, so here's hoping that it's hormonal.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I DO NOT HAVE CANCER.
Hospital just rang, I’m “a puzzle” apparently, my boob is doing something weird in terms of looking like cancer but it’s NOT…all biopsy results are normal…symptoms have almost disappeared…they said it could have been a weird infection that mimicked cancer and they want me back in to take a look and have a poke and figure out WTF is going on, but whatever it is IT’S NOT CANCER. YEEEEEEAHHHHHHH!!!!!

  • This is brilliant news! I have just joined this chat and I'm browsing because I am waiting for results of a vacuum assisted excision and the waiting is torture. I couldn't scroll past without saying c ongratulations! I am hoping that mine will also not be cancer but I have another 11 days to wait!

  • Hi Siananigans,

    This is absolutely fantastic news.

I'm glad to hear that they are still interested in finding out exactly what it was, but I am delighted for you that it does seems to have been an infection after all.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Moo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are in the unenviable situation of waiting for results. This is always a worrying time. Of all the people who attend the breast clinic, only 2 out of every 10, will get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are still good for you. Have you been given a date to receive your results or are you waiting to hear when?

I sincerely hope that you get good news too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you so much for replying to me. You don't know how much I appreciate it. Yes I have written all of the details on my own thread but, in a nutshell, I have been told I have classic lobular neoplasia B3 lesion indeterminate or could possibly be cancer. These were biopsy results which is why I had to have the lump excised. I should get my results on 5th September, which just seems sooooo far away and I am finding it hard to think about anything else and to sleep.

I'm trying to be positive but it's so hard!
