Breast Lump - Breast Clinic Referral

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. I'm 27 and I have a very dense and fibrous right breast which has given me a few scares over the past five years. I've been to the breast clinic twice before and thankfully it's just come back as fibrous tissue. I recently found a lump near my nipple this time and I'm just back from my GP appointment. She checked everywhere including the lump but didn't seem concerned. She said it feels like a fibroadenoma and to try and not worry but I'm being referred again for peace of mind/just to make sure. This will be my third time in 5 years so I find it all a bit triggering. Although the lump is firm, she said it's a good sign because it's moveable and it has smooth edges etc. I'm happy that she didn't seem concerned but you never 100% know. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? I find it hard trusting health professionals because my health anxiety takes over and I don't want to get my hopes up. Thanks for your time x

  • Hi Snoopydoo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of your find, but please try not to panic. Of all the people referred to the breast clinic, only 2 people out of every 10 are diagnosed with breast cancer. Not all breast lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or fibrous changes. You will find this wait one of the longest and hardest that you've ever experienced - we all do. The unknown is a horrible lace to be and irrespective of the outcome, you will feel better once you know the cause.

Try to avoid looking things up on the internet, until you know exactly what you're dealing with. Most of the cases here are the more spectacular ones and we can end up scaring ourselves even more. Also try not to keep feeling the lump, as this will eventually make it sore. It is particularly hard on you, when you haven't told anyone. Now that you've found us, I'm sure that you'll find our forum helpful. There is always someone here for you to talk to and we all know exactly how you feel, because we've experienced the wait ourselves.

I myself, have had 2 bouts of breast cancer. The first was14 years ago and the second  was the following year. Despite this, I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. I sincerely hope that your appointment comes through soon and that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Don't forget that we're always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi all - sorry for the delay, last week ended up being a super busy one. I had my ultrasound last week and thankfully it's nothing untoward! She showed me it on the screen, it's another big fatty, fibrous lump in my breast. She said my changes are consistent with fibrocystic breast disease and this is the cause of my pain as well. I think I'll be prone to more changes in my lifetime unfortunately but I'll keep checking, as always. She said about cutting down on caffeine and maybe taking primrose oil overtime to help manage my pain.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to message, it's really helped. I can't thank you all enough! Thinking of those who didn't get positive news but this chat is a god send. Such a supportive, lovely bunch x

  • Hi Anneroseina,

Thank you for the update. I'm delighted to hear that all turned out as well as it could for you. There may be future changes, but here's hoping that they remain benign. As you know, we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello

How are you?? Have you had your appointment yet? Finding these lumps is so scary but from talking on this forum and ladies that have found lumps, so many have turned out to be nothing.
including mine. I know this won’t stop you worrying. Iif you read 99.9% turn out to be beneign, you will always think you are going to be the 0.1%. I just hope the experience of others including myself will offer you a tiny bit of reassurance.
Let us know how you get on

  • Hi Chelbel,

Yes, I have my appointment on the 3rd of October, which is annoying because I still have almost two weeks to wait.

I found now, a stain on the same breast. It looks like a bruise that fading but it doesn't seem to go away and it doesn't hurt when touched.
