Lump in neck

Hi, just looking for some advice/reassurance. I've had a lump in my neck just under my jaw line below my ear for 5 weeks. I've seen the doctor, had blood tests and I'm having a ultrasound on Friday. The lump is around 5cm in size, it isn't painful either. I first thought swollen gland but I haven't been unwell? I'm getting more worried now that it might be cancer after Googling. I'm 28 female, mum of 2. Has anyone had something similar and turned out to be normal? Thanks

  • Hi

I don't have any advice but am in a similar position. I have a firm immovable painless lump in my neck, have an appointment with my GP on Friday (it has been postponed once as I tested positive for covid the day of the original appointment).

we all know we shouldn't Google yet we do it anyway. I keep telling myself that the chance of it being cancer is very small but it doesn't stop the worry.

I hope the US goes well and you don't have to wait long for good news.

    All the best

  • Thank you! I wasn't very worried at first but it doesn't seem to be shrinking or going away at all, I know I shouldn't Google but I can't help myself. I'm really hoping it's nothing sinister but can't help but worry now and I can't wait for an answer although I don't think I will get that at the ultrasound will probably have to wait for another appointment with GP to discuss. I hope your appointment goes well on Friday too!

  • It feels hard but it can be pushed slightly around

  • Hi paigerlina,

I wanted to say I hope all goes well tomorrow with your ultrasound. If you'd like to, please let us know how you get on. Keeping everything crossed for a positive outcome for you

  • Thank you that's very kind of you!
I will let you know what happens tomorrow ️

  • Hi I have had my ultrasound, I'm even more worried to be honest. The sonographer said they couldn't tell me what it was, they took lots of pictures of it and checked everywhere around my neck etc. They just told me the doctor would Be in touch and next step is probably a biopsy. I feel like if it were a cyst or something they would of told me and said it was nothing to worry about. Just have to wait for my GP to contact me now

  • sorry to hear you didn't get an answer yesterday  how are you feeling today?

From what I understand the only way to be sure what is causing a lump is from a biopsy so it is likely it is a precaution and they want to be thorough before coming to a diagnosis. Although it's worrying, it's actually a good thing they are doing it. But I totally understand why you are still anxious, I would be too, and its easy to fear the worse and try to read between the lines. I'm certain you are not alone, reading many of the posts on here, lots of them are related to the anxiety of waiting for test dates and results.

I can only suggest trying to keep yourself busy to keep your mind off it as much as possible. No easy task I realise. I hope you have a date for your biopsy soon so you don't have to wait long xx

  • Thank you, you're right I'm glad they are doing the right thing by investigating further. I'm hoping my Gp contacts me tomorrow and gives me abit more information about what was seen on the ultrasound in regards to measurements etc. I feel abit better today trying to stay busy to keep my mind off it! The waiting is definitely the worst part, I wish it could all be done in one day. What happened at your appointment? X

  • Fingers crossed that your GP can shed some light on the ultrasound. No reason why you shouldn't call the GP if your anxious, I'm sure they will be understanding.

I am even more confused following my appointment. I have three lumps in my neck. Two at the back, and then noticed a lump on the side of my neck when I was putting my hair up before the appointment. The GP only checked two and said it was folliculitis. I do have a couple of spots on the back of my neck, but they haven't been there long, are not sore and not itchy. Maybe been there a week and are pretty much healed. He confirmed it was my lymph nodes that are enlarged, they have been like that for a month now. He offered me a long course of antibiotics or to wait 4-6 weeks. I declined the antibiotics as the spots are not tender, and neither are the lumps.

I figured I either a) wait and see if they go down in 4-6 weeks b) the spots will clear up and the lymph nodes will get bigger (which one has) and I'll be back soon to get them looked at or c) the spots don't clear up completely and I go back in a week or so to get antibiotics.

so more waiting here as well and desperately trying to keep distracted.
