Waiting for first appointment at breast clinic

Hi I'm new to this site. It looks a very supportive forum and I know will be better than my incessant googling. I'm aware many of you are much further along the journey. I have a sizeable lump in my right breast, I'm 48. My GP said she was hopeful it is a cyst as it felt circular but that she would keep her fingers crossed for me.  It's between the size of a walnut and lime so pretty big and at the bottom to outside of my breast. I'm obviously terrified that because of it's size if it is cancer it won't be good news. I'm finding the waiting absolutely unbearable and I'm struggling sleeping. Because of its size I find it really hard to not think about and it also feels very achy.
My apointment is on the 21st December and I understand they will do biopsy and mammagram etc and then it will be around a week for results - depending on Christmas/ New Year.  At the moment I'm thinking of every possible worst case scenaro. I'm always a very pro active patient and often an advocate on behalf of family members and feel so helpless at the moment. In terms of questions to ask on the 21st any pointers would be appreciated. Also any top tips on how to switch off a very worried mind. Many thanks and sending much love to you all

  • That sounds reassuring. Hopefully all will be well.  My apointment is on Tuesday 21st at 10.30. My GP said she wanted to say it's a cyst as it's circular but that it obviously needed to be checked out. She said she would keep her fingers crossed for me. My lump is quite big so very hard not to ignore and I wonder why I hadn't noticed it sooner. I'm worried as cancer is often staged by the size of the tumour. I'm trying my best to stay positive and keep busy but my mind does go to some dark places at times.

  • Cysts can grow large quite quickly ! I hadn't noticed mine either but she said it might of increased in size due to menstrual cycle ! Are you pre or post menopause if you don't mind me asking x

  • Thanks Dom. prior to having my mirena coil fitted a couple of years ago I was still having regular periods. The coil has stopped most of the bleeding but my breasts do get really sore and heavy pre menstrual. I'm hoping it's something hormone related and a cyst growing quite rapidly does make sense. I'll be partying if that is the case!  X

  • I know right !! Me too if that's the case ! Have you every had mammogram or any checks before as that can spot changes few years ahead x

  • I had a mammogram about 10 years ago as I found a very small pea like lump but no checks since. I have had relatively regular blood tests but not sure if anything can be detected on those?
I think the only way of really knowing is via the mammogram and biopsy. I've done lots of googling and it hasn't been that helpful. I want reassurance but the internet obviously can't give me any. I think I'm at the point now when I have accepted the wait and whilst the days are easier enough with work keeping me busy, nights are tricky and my sleeping is affected. Have you got good support networks as it has helped me sharing with a few close family/ friends? X

  • Aw thank you. I have had a banging headache all afternoon, I knew I was stressing but don't think I realised how much. My darling partner cried more than me today bless him. He really is wonderful. Aw please let me know how you get on with yours. Six more sleeps, you can do this!!!

  • Yes thank you. Will be thinking of you ladies still waiting as I totally know how you all feel. Sending lots of positive vibes and love xx

  • I see , blood tests are no good for those I am afraid ! I had mammogram 2.5 years ago as I went down the same route, I have got bad health anxiety so I am always finding something wrong with me unfortunately! Last time my tests didn't even show a lump with my GP and myself both feeling one so go figure ! Glad you've got friends and family you can talk to ! Mines are all telling me it's nothing to worry about :)) but it's eeasier said than done x

  • Hi O'reilly,

I am so sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience today. It is correct that we should all have an appointment withing 2 weeks from referral. These clinics are always very busy, so to some extent I can understand why the secretarial staff get browned off with GPs advising patients to phone them after just 6 days. However, this is always a worrying time. There are so many unkowns and our imagination always seems to take us to dark places.

I doubt that you will get an appointment much sooner by going privately. Many women report seeing the same surgeon privately as in the NHS. If you do turn out to need further treatment, most people tend to get referred back into the NHS anyway.

Not all lumps are cancerous. Many are benign cysts, fibrous or hormonal changes. In fact, only 1 person in every 8 referred will get a cancer diagnosis. I hope that your appointment will come through soon. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi all just checking on how we are doing today ?  My anxiety is not very good today and trying to stay positive which is very difficult. I am staying away from reading any other Breast forums on her at present as it makes me worse. I still have a week until appointment which seems like forever
