Waiting for first appointment at breast clinic

Hi I'm new to this site. It looks a very supportive forum and I know will be better than my incessant googling. I'm aware many of you are much further along the journey. I have a sizeable lump in my right breast, I'm 48. My GP said she was hopeful it is a cyst as it felt circular but that she would keep her fingers crossed for me.  It's between the size of a walnut and lime so pretty big and at the bottom to outside of my breast. I'm obviously terrified that because of it's size if it is cancer it won't be good news. I'm finding the waiting absolutely unbearable and I'm struggling sleeping. Because of its size I find it really hard to not think about and it also feels very achy.
My apointment is on the 21st December and I understand they will do biopsy and mammagram etc and then it will be around a week for results - depending on Christmas/ New Year.  At the moment I'm thinking of every possible worst case scenaro. I'm always a very pro active patient and often an advocate on behalf of family members and feel so helpless at the moment. In terms of questions to ask on the 21st any pointers would be appreciated. Also any top tips on how to switch off a very worried mind. Many thanks and sending much love to you all

  • I'm just back from hospital. Had mammogram and ultrasound. Fatty lumps and there's some cysts but apparently nothing sinister to worry about. Such a relief. My husband burst into tears when he heard the news.

My thoughts are with each and every one of you going through this x

  • Thank you for letting us know I'm so pleased for you and at least you can sleep tonight xx

  • Fantastic news !!

I'm so pleased for you and it really does give hope to others. Have a lovely evening and enjoy that weight being lifted !! Xx

  • Thanks fantastic news. What a relief. Can I ask how much your appointment was to go private. I'm finding the waiting unbearable. I'm on day 7 and have another week to wait until my apointment. X

  • I wish I could tell you the cost but the insurance company take care of it thank god. If you call your local private hoapital they will tell you the cost involved. I really for you, it's horrific enough without having rhe agony of a longer wait x

  • Thanks for your reply. I'll do some research tomorrow. My GP said it wouldn't be much quicker going private but your response time was excellent. X

  • Found the lump on Saturday, and by Monday I'm tested and cleared. GPS sometimes are reluctant to promote private care. I'd recommend looking into it as I've always found it to be really fast. I'll keep everything crossed for you x

  • Hi

I found this thread tonight and its given me some reassurance. I have a horrible dull pain in my left breast it comes and goes often over the past 6 months but the pain has moved to the side of my breast & arm pit. My chest is tight too.

I went to the GP on Friday they referred me to the breast clinic but said it would be at least January with all the backlog and Christmas so I went private and also have an appointment on the 21st. That was the soonest they could give me and it was a cancellation.

The private hospitals can give you costs upfront usually the consultants fee is maximum £200 although not sure what Biopsies, mammograms etc cost.

I cannot think of anything else other than my appointment, it keeps me awake, I google my symptoms and worry myself more.

I have a history of cancer in my family and used to smoke for 10 years so I'm assuming the worst. The wait is just horrible, I'm counting the sleeps, hoping for a good outcome too but it just takes over your mind

Trsbrk im so pleased you got good news you will hopefully sleep well tonight feeling reassured

    Xx

  • Hi Loopy,

I'm glad to hear that you've already been seen at the clinic and hope that it all went well. Did they give you any indication of what they thought, or do you now have to wait for the results of tests?

If it is of any help to you, I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer. The first was 12 years ago and the second was 11 years ago. I still manage to live a busy and fulfilled life, We all tend to feel better once we get a diagnosis. It's the uncertainty of not knowing that is so hard to cope with.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Great that you are being seen so quickly hope you get good results x
