Thy3f cancer diagnosis

Hi. This is my first time posting here. I really hope someone can help.

After a diagnosis of ME/CFS, I was given more tests and some nodules were found on my thyroid. I had a FNA and my results paper categorises them as Thy3f.

A few days ago I was told it was cancer and to wait for surgery but everything I look at online suggests Thy3f is indeterminate (which means they can't be sure) so I don't understand why I've been told I have cancer?

Does anyone know if this is correct? Can you be given a diagnosis of cancer from an indeterminate result?

Thank you so much

  • Hi [@CazStu]‍ et al

a quick update: I had a total thyroidectomy on Monday 1st August. They had warned that I may need 3-4 nights at the hospital but the operation went well and calcium levels and parathyroid hormone levels were good and steady so I was allowed home the next day! Hurray

a few things to note: the pain in the recovery room was so much more than the original hemithyroidectomy - apparently because going through scar tissue second time around. So, if you are in the same situation, that is, you have already had a semi thyroidectomy, I would strongly urge you to ask for extra pain medications to be available in the recovery room (in my case they had to go and find the anaesthetist two time because I didn't get enough at recovery).

also, I was advised(too late) that I should have had a stool softener prior the evening of surgery and the evening after surgery. Constipation is the enemy here. So be prepared

i was given thyroid medication straight away. A review with bloods scheduled in 6 weeks

followup is in two weeks - to stage the cancer and then to be referred to an endocrinologist and also back to my oncologist to prepare for radio iodine treatment

I am happy to answer any questions you have. In the meantime, be strong, informed and of positive mind

    best wishes,

  • Hello dear [@shs1]‍

It was so good of you to send me an update and I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner. TBH I haven't been coping that well and have struggled to connect on many levels. My nodule was found during an MRI in March and I was told about it in April. The biopsy was May. The inconclusive result of TH3 was given in June and I was told I would have half the thyroid out, with a core biopsy, within 4 months.... then nothing. I keep chasing only to be told there's no news. Having had breast cancer in 2019, the wait to find out if this is a new cancer, or secondary, or nothing sinister has taken its toll. I've now asked whether it would be worth repeating the biopsy as if this shows cancerous rather than abnormal cells, I'd have the whole thyroid out in one go. That was 3 weeks ago and still nothing. Hey ho!

How are you now? Have you had any further treatment. I hope you're recovering well. Did you wait this long?

what a pickle! Sending love and best wishes and thanks again for all the info x
