Normal smear result but have cancer

So I've always been completely up to date  with my smear tests.
In April one came back abnormal so had a colposcopy which came back clear.

Then in Oct i started having random bleeding, so long story short after 2 gp visits I got another smear and sent to a gynaecologist. Smear came back normal but the gynaecologist said she could see something, took two biopsy's and I found out yesterday that I have stage 1b2 cervical cancer.

I feel so angry and confused. How could my smear results be coming back clear when I have cancer?? Why didn't my previous tests pick up abnormal cells, before it became cancer.

My first gp told me it was just stress or my pill, so glad I pushed for more tests and trusted my instincts that something was wrong! Also glad I have a good gynaecologist!

  • Hi EJM78

Following scans and hysteroscopy they have diagnosed complex endometrial hyperplasia and fibroids. I am having hysteroscopy every 2/3 months to check on the hyperplasia.

im due to go again 15th October.
hope your appointment goes well. The fast track is a nerve wracking time but they do act quickly and are thorough.
best of luck to you xx

  • Thank you for your reply. I'm glad that you are being monitored with the hysteroscopy - that's some reassurance for you. I've been for a CT today and got ultrasound next week so hoping for some answers soon, whatever that may be. Take care x

  • Wow...I'm exactly the same as you? Are you any further on?

  • Can I ask how did you know you had a cervical ectropion? I've had lots of symptoms and last smea came back normal but HPV+. I'm worried they'll do my smear and it'll be normal but something lurking underneath and would love some help on how to push for more tests x

  • I am also in the same boat. I had a smear last year which was hpv positive and was told I would be recalled in 12 months time. I went beginning of September for my smear and it came back possible high grade cell changes with hpv positive so was called up for a colposcopy. 28th September I had my colposcopy and  I could sense there was something wrong by the consultants reaction. Had a biopsy taken on that day and waited 3 weeks for the results with the positive mindset that no news is good news. On 18th October hospital phoned to ask me to go in that morning when I was told I have cancer and now currently waiting for my ct scan and mri xcan results to come back to see what stage it is. I have lots of anger thinking why wasn't it picked up last year? It is so worrying not knowing what is going to happen next but am trying to stay as positive as I can. Telling my 13 year old twins I have cancer is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do
