DCIS with micro invasion.

After my mamogram I received a letter w week later asking me to go back. It mentioned I could take someone with me Amd that the appointment could last for up to one hour.
At the appointment I was advised it was the left breast they were interested in. I had a detailed mamogram on that breast. I then had an ultrasound and was advised that there was something of concern (linear calcification) and they recommended a biopsy which they could do straight away. They took four biopsies and inserted a clip(?) in case the results are malignant. I am now waiting for results. All a bit of a shock and feeling uncertain about everything now!
I have researched linear calcifications and amongst all the possible calcifications there are (who knew there are so many!) it seems mine falls under the type to cause concern.

does anyone have any experience/advice?

trying to keep upbeat and busy

  • Hello

i thought I would give any update, both to clear my head and share my experience.

I had my surgery for my DCIS on Thursday 27th February. I had a wire guided wide local excision. The surgeon said he was pleased with his surgery and just needed to wait for the pathology results which usually take a week to ten days. I have recovered well and everything is healing well.
I just got my results yesterday, a long 2 1/2 weeks which I have put down to the coronovirus chaos sweeping the world. It's so awful what is happening.
Anyway I think I had taken the view of no news is good news, (in between moments of panic).
The wonderful consultant was very positive and put me at ease by saying they had got good healthy margins. Then came the "however!". The "however" is that unfortunately the cells have broken out of the milk duct so it's now a DCIS with micro invasion. Thank goodness it's micro.

So now I am waiting to have my lymph node (can't remember if he said just one or more) removed. Possibly this week or next week. I am hoping for this week please!
He mentioned it may be quite painful after and also possible lymphodema problems.

This morning I am feeling quite strange. With all the news of coronovirus I feel almost insignificant and don't want to be a nuisance to anyone. I also am concerned that I mustn't get this virus as it would delay my operation. Also the same applies to the consultant and everyone at the hospital. Confused is an understatement!

at least the sun is shining!

  • You sound like you are in a similar position to me. I had a DCIS confirmed in Oct last year. But my margins were not clear after 2 lumpectomy. It resulted a mastectomy and diep reconstruction. In my first lumpectomy my lymp node was clear. Now out of the 2 sentinel lymph node biopsies, one has micro invasion. I have been told it's chemo and radiotherapy.....but with coronvirus and a mum of 2 young children you can't help but worry. I lost my sister in law to breast cancer last summer. Good luck with everything x

  • Hi Thankyou for sharing this, it is all such a worrying time, especially with young children and this virus. You have been through such a lot. My situation seems much easier as my children are grown up. I am 56. I wished they had removed my lymph nodes at the original surgery but I understand they don’t like to do this as it is t always needed and you could end up with lymphedema unnecessarily. There are just so many aspects and scenarios to all of this and just when I think I know it, I realize that I don’t! I also just feel so insignificant with all the coronovirus worry. Take care and keep me updated. I should have my surgery date tomorrow. Jayne x
  • Glad I found this thread as this is exactly me! Was told I had DCIS, operation 25/05 this year, 3 weeks later results complete excision but  with 2.5mm focus of invasive. I’ve had to wait 6 weeks for lymph node sampling, apparently not urgent! That’s fine for a clinician to say! Such a long time thinking and pondering the what ifs! So my procedure is 24/07 then hopefully will have a plan going forwards. Any of you ladies above any further forward? This has been ongoing for me since March when I first attended my GP, my head is total mush with it all

  • Hi sorry for the late reply.

such a worrying time for you, sending positive vibes your way.

for me after my DCIS operation I was told there was micro invasion. I then had my sentinel node biopsy about four weeks later. I waited just over a week for my results which were thankfully clear.
I found this procedure more painful than the wide local excision as it Is in the arm pit. Four months on I still have some  strange sort of numbness bit it isn't bad and I found that swimming and general movement and excercise really helped with tightness.

I now will have regular check ups.

all of this was difficult for me  with coronavirus kicking off everywhere and I found myself  feeling quite insignificant. Bit here I am!

please don't hesitate to reach out and chat as it really can help to voice our feelings and concerns.

    semding you a big hug.

    Hi Whitmic,

I am sorry to hear that you have had to wait so long for your lymph node sampling, but hope that it all went well for you today.

You will feel better once you know the outcome and have a plan for moving forward.

I have had two bouts of primary breast cancer in the past 11 years. I lost my mum to breast cancer 10 years before I was diagnosed. I have been surprised to see how much diagnosis, treatment and aftercare have advanced since then. There is just no comparison between the care that we have both received.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Fingers crossed for good results.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Ncd,

I am self-employed, so was back to work within 4 weeks after my lumpectomy. I still had difficulty lifting things above my head at that stage, but, as I don't do this at work, that wasn't a problem. I am glad to hear that you are still working. This should help to keep your mind busy on other matters which is good.

The best people to know how long you will need to be off work are your consultant and breast care nurse, as they know your medical history. All cancers are individual to the person and some will heal quicker than others.

It does help to keep positive throughout all this if you can. It's not always easy to do this, but it makes all the difference.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you on Thursday.

    Keep in touch.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
