Fibroadenoma turned out to be cancer?

Just had a biopsy which was really painful as I have breast implants and they struggled to get it. They were confident it’s just a fibroadenoma but I’m still stressing. Has anyone been told it’s just a fibroadenoma and it turned out to be malignant?

  • Hello, I came across this recently, I'm having similar symptoms and will be going to the doctors. But I wondered what your results were if you dont mind me asking? Also, did you have a hard lump or soft? Hoping you're okay x

  • Hi

Unfortunately I'm one of the unlucky ones whose fibroadenoma turned out to be cancer . I wish there was an easier way to put it.

I like others found a lump before Xmas and was referred to the local clinic. All of the tests pointed towards a fibroadenoma but as a matter of course a biopsy was taken.

I went back for the results on Thursday expecting to be given the all clear. Since I had no reason to think that it was going to be anything different after my first appointment and that there is no history of cancer in my family I went on my own. I so wish now that I hadn't been on my own.:(

In walked the consultant, student doctor and cancer nurse. All I can really recall is the consultant say how surprised they were at the results from the biopsy and then talking about my treatment options (lumpectomy and radiotherapy). Talk about being in a state of shock! It took me awhile to catch on that they were telling me that it was cancer.

Its been a tough few days but I'm slowly getting my head together. A big thanks to family and friends:)

I think what I really need to say is that it doesn't seem to be the norm for a fibroadenoma lump to turn out to be cancer however there are always exceptions but these I think are few and far between.

I had hoped that this as my first post would come over as a bit more positive for those waiting for results however I'm not sure if it has, sorry.

  • Hi,

Just wanted to say I went to see the breast consultant today to get a lump checked over, although I was pretty confident it was a sebaceous cyst. He also agreed and the ultra sound confirmed it. Whilst there both breasts were given a thorough ultrasound,  and to my surprise he found a lump in the other breast. I didnt even know it was there. He's pretty confident it's just a fibrodeama, but took two biopsys to be on the safe side. I'm not overly worried at this current time. If anything I hope I'll be another person on this thread with a confirmed fibrodeama, and itll reasure anyone new reading this thread.

Results are back in a week, so I'll keep you updated.

    Hi MemeDeb,

Welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear that you have to be the 'exception to the rule'. You must have got quite a shock when you returned to the clinic for your test results. This is why I always advise people to take someone with them when attending a clinic, especially when getting any test results.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and can fully appreciate just how you felt when you were told. I am so glad to hear that you have good support from family and friends. Have you got a date for your lumpectomy yet? I hope that it comes through soon and, that all goes well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Mise,

I am so sorry to hear that you are having similar symptoms, but glad to know that you have managed to persuade your GP to refer you to the clinic. Where have you been left with this, are you having any further surgery or treatment for your cysts or fibroadenoma?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

    Thank you for that.

I had result of benign and no surgery required, so very relieved with that. It was good to be able to update on here to ease the worry of those waiting on results, and I extend good wishes to anyone who hasn't had a good outcome from their tests. It does seem that results can go either way for some.
