Shock diagnosis.Bowel cancer spread to Liver.

My husband of 62 has just been told he has cancer of the bowed which has spread to the liver.

He has had CT and MRI scans and next week goes for. PET scan .

His GP thought he had an ulcer until the colonoscopy showed otherwise so it has come as a great shock. I have read that liver cancer is not curable and he has been told he may be offered chemotherapy.

Has anyone any experience of this type of cancer and what we can expect ? Has anyone survived this for any length of time..?

still sinking in and so many questions.

any help gratefully received.

Thank you

  • Hi Shareen

I'm so sorry to hear about your symptoms but please try to be upbeat, there is so much that the doctors can do, they are amazing people and I am sure you will get through this as I did three years ago. I totally understand you are scared and terrified but you will be looked after very well. Please keep me informed of your progress.

Good luck with all your tests and scans, you can do this.

  • Good to hear Denise xx

My husband started on Capox and Avastin and has had a great response. He had a right hemicolectomy and was off chemo for 3.5 months. His CEA then started tracking upwards so he's back on chemo. However, he feels totally fine. The chemo doesn't seem to affect him at all and he's still working, we're still going out and about with the kids and making the most of each day.

We changed oncologists as we didn't click with our old one. We're really happy with our current one. We still go off and get new opinions in the hope that the liver will become operable.

What I do know is that the chemo has given us an extra 10 months together that we wouldn't have had if the chemo hadn't worked. We will carry on, living each day and appreciating life ️

  • Hello Sarah

So good to hear your husband is responding to the treatment and you are all enjoying and living a full life. Hopefully he will be able to have liver surgery soon so please do not be disheartened, there is so much they can do now.

Good luck for the future and let me know how you're getting on.

    Take care

    Denise

  • Hello again,

My Dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer July 2020.

His chemo treatment tablet form and intravenous method made the tumour shrink right down although still not able to operate.

He was off chemo for 5 months as a break before things began to spread again. Tablet form has stopped the spreading again. However the intravenous method isnt an option this time as it damaged the hands and feet. We are hoping the tablet form is strong enough to shrink the tumour again. He is a strong man and is eating and exercising well. You would never know he was ill. Same weight and colour about him.

We keep fighting together and looking forward to another Christmas.

Keep your family positive and good things can happen.

Glad to see you are still supporting everyone Denise.

    Jamie

  • Hi Jamie

I'm so happy to hear that your dads tumour has shrunk significantly, I have every faith in the doctors and onchologists, they are experts and know what they're doing. I hope the new tablet form will help shrink the tumour some more and hope they will be able to operate soon.

It's also good to hear that he is well and eating and exercising, this is very good for not only his physical health but also for his mental health.

I wish you all the very best for Christmas.

Take care as as always keep positive and safe.

  • Hi,

My mom got diagnosed with bowel cancer that has spread to the liver last year. They diagnosed it as stage 4, incurable. Since then she has had 14 months worth of treatment every 2 weeks. She has a quality of life now, she's working and going about her day to day life. Her tumours in her liver haven shrunken since the first scan but it's still inoperable. We've been to see a private specialist reverently for a second opinion hoping that they could operate or advise a different treatment but unfortunately they couldn't recommend differently to the NHS.

The private specialist advised that the average life expectancy from diagnosis is 2-3 years for someone of her condition. I'm here to see if there has been anyone with a similar diagnosis that has out lived that prefidiction or even been cured? We need a little bit of positivity right now. Thank you.

  • Hello

I was diagnosed with the same thing in October 2017, I had a right helecolectomy (part of bowel removed) chemo for 8 months and surgery to my liver in May 2018, I am still NED (no evidence of disease) so please stay positive. I hope your mum is ok, it seems as if she's responding well to treatment and I am happy to hear that she is living life to the full.

She can do this, have a very happy Christmas, keep safe and above all stay positive.

    Denise

  • Thank you Denise. That really does give us hope.

Thanks for the kind words and it's great to see that you're still NED. Enjoy your Christmas!
