Shock diagnosis.Bowel cancer spread to Liver.

My husband of 62 has just been told he has cancer of the bowed which has spread to the liver.

He has had CT and MRI scans and next week goes for. PET scan .

His GP thought he had an ulcer until the colonoscopy showed otherwise so it has come as a great shock. I have read that liver cancer is not curable and he has been told he may be offered chemotherapy.

Has anyone any experience of this type of cancer and what we can expect ? Has anyone survived this for any length of time..?

still sinking in and so many questions.

any help gratefully received.

Thank you

  • Hi Sandra.

he's not having the best of luck. It feels like one step forward 2 steps back at mo.
he's a lot stronger, but he's having issues with reoccurring cysts (inside his tummy where scar is from the op) a lump of puss etc keeps forming and bursting which then opens the scar wound ever so slightly. He takes antibiotics to clear it, it goes down/away and the hole starts closing nicely but then once antibiotics have stopped it happens again (3rd time was this Monday) he can't start chemo until the hole is completely closed  so the cancer on the liver is obviously growing (he's had a scan to show this )  it's heartbreaking because I just want him to start the chemo to give him a better chance. There going to give him chemo in tablet form? I've never heard of it. Have you? I'm wondering if it's as good as the normal chemo? It's all a worry.
    How's your situation? Xx

  • Oh that's such a shame Sammy, must be very frustrating for him, especially after happening 3 times, fingers crossed it clears this time. Sorry to hear the cancer in his liver has grown...once he's on the chemo, hopefully that will slow it down or at least stop it from growing. My husband has 2 lots of chemo, one as a drip into his bloodstream for a few hours (just on one day) and then tablets for 2 weeks and then he gets a week off. He's had 6 cycles now and is waiting for his results of his scan to see if the chemo has worked. We find out Friday so fingers crossed!

I hope your dad starts his treatment soon Sammy and once he has you'll all feel so better hopefully knowing that he's being treated for it. Fingers crossed for your dad too xx

  •
Hey Sandra. Everything crossed for your husbands results please let me know how he gets on.

my dads luck changed just in time to start chemo! the doc gave the all clear for the go ahead to start. He had his first tablet on Wednesday

my sister is with him this weekend (she's regularly tested for covid as she's a carer) she messaged me saying how she had walked into the livingroom where he had been having a nap in his chair, when all of a sudden he leapt up slightly and then slid down (like he was ducking down)

my sister apologised for startling him and he explained it wasn't her that had startled him and that it was a snake coming for him (hence why he was trying to duck)  so my sister googled the meaning of a dream with a snake.

PROGRESS: in ancient times, snakes were seen as signs of transformation.  If snakes appear in your dreams, it can signify that you are moving forward, are healing, and have entered a phase of personal transformation. Most likely, you have moved beyond a hindrance on your path that existed till recently.

how reassuring is that! I'll take any glimmer of hope.
how strange that he's seen a snake just as he's started chemo.

    take care Sandra. Xx

  • Hi Sammy,

Such good news that your dad was well enough to start his chemo, his journey begins now which must be a huge relief for you all.

What a weird dream for your dad to have had and the meaning of it...he may mentally feel in a better place now too knowing he's being treated! I would feel reassured by that too Sammy! (Bless your sister for thinking she had startled him).

We received my husbands results from his scan Friday and the lesions on his lungs and liver have shrunk significantly and the bowel one hasn't grown so we are so pleased, the doctor was really pleased too...it was the best news we could have hoped for. He started his second cycle Friday too so knowing that it's working helps so much.

Hopefully your dad will be okay with the treatment and you all will receive some good news in a few months!

    You all take care

    Sandra x

    Sammy xx

  • Hi all,

A while since i last posted; apologies.  Things have been going well for me since last September.  Back in early January my consultants said that my response to the Folfox & Panitumumab has been very good -  "better than we hoped". The end result being that they believed surgery was now possible on my bowel; I was over the moon!  Chemo stopped at that point and i had surgery on 25th February, removing approximately 30cm of my bowel - "all the cancer they could see".  I also had an ileostomy.  I have now been home for nearly 4 weeks recuperating.  I've had to get to grips with the stoma bag, but hey, i'll take that and the plan is to reverse it at some point in the future.

I still have the cancer in my liver and lung, but the chemo had really reduced those.  Next step is to get me back on chemo when i've recuperated sufficiently from the operation to keep those at bay.

I'm not out of the woods yet, but i feel in a much better place than when i was first diagnosed last June, when it all felt pretty grim.

There is hope folks.  Keep positive and keep fighting everyone.

    Andy

  • Hi Andy

I'm so glad to hear your operation went well and your treatment is going to plan. Also good to hear you're getting to grips with the stoma bag, I do hope they'll be able to reverse it soon.

It's also good that the chemo has reduced the cancer in your liver and lung, keep going you are doing so well. Good luck for the next step.

Onward and upward, keep fighting keep strong and positive, you can do this.

    Keep us informed

    Denise

  • Amazing news Andy!

I'd take a stoma bag any day aswell for sure.
Let's hope you recover ASAP so you can start the next round of chemo

good luck and please keep positive

    take care. Sammy.

  • Hi Neil,

I have been reading your previous posts. How are you getting on?

Today I have been diagnosed with cancer of the rectum which sounds similar in description to yourself.

I am glad to have found this site as it gives some hope.
