  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Gail!

I love your username Eeyore by the way.

You have come to the right place to meet others with breast cancer. As it happens, someone else posted yesterday evening who had breast cancer last year, a lumpectomy as well as lymph nodes removed. Her name is Elaine6 and you can read her post here. Feel free to respond on her thread. I am sure she would be happy to get in touch with you and share her own experience.

I am sure others will be along soon to say hello and share their story with you. You will see they are a very friendly bunch on this forum so I will now let them do all the talking.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi there,

im new on here too. I was diagnosed with what the dr's thought was DCIS last oct but following my mastectomy was also triple negative grade 3 cancer. I'm now at the halfway point through my chemotherapy which is tough, especially with a 10 month old baby!

be lovely to chat to people in the same boat.

  • Hi Gail, have just seen your message. I had all lymph nodes removed in september. I still get an ache around my armpit and still find it odd that there is no feeling in places especially when putting on deodorant, i try to keep my arm going and do the odd exercises when my shoulder starts to stiffen up. I am in the really blessed position to be cancer free now which seems amazing as i was told there was no cure and just prolonging life. Hope you are doing well Regards Jos
  • Hi squelch 30, I was told I had grade 3breast cancer in January it was 7.5 cm so was told chemo first then op and radiotherapy. Can you tell me what chemo you are on please? I have had 3 rounds of Fec. Andria

I'm only 36 two boys and no risk factors apart from pill! I already been through this with my eldest boy when he was 3 had lymphoma ! He is now a healthy 15 year old which I thank gud for ! We can do it if he can be positive if u can it helps xxx

  • Hi andria. I had a lump 10cm x 12cm. I had 6 rounds of ecx chemo then all the lymph nodes removed in September last year, initially i was diagnosed with cancer unknown primary and at the end of treatment we were told their best guess was triple negative breast cancer. I am now cancer free and getting back to normal. Wishing you all the best for the future Jos.
  • Ho Jos, Thankyou for your message I'm so pleased your cancer free, I have to have my 4th chemo next Thursday and I am terrified it's a different one to the last 3 and I really struggled on them . So hoping the next is not as bad.x

  • Hi Andrea. Not been on the site for a while. I really hope your treatment is going ok and you are getting through it better than you expected. I found as you have more rounds of chemo the more tired you get, for my last 2 rounds the hospital gave me a fantastic anti sickness pill that apparently they dont hand out as the norm due to cost so was pretty cheesed off i had 4 rounds with alot of sickness when there was no need. Also had terrible mouth ulcers that went into my nose, nothing could be done about the nose but got some fantastic stuff for the mouth. What i am trying to say is if you have any bad side effects just ask them for something else if what you have been given isnt working there is usually something else they can give you. Sending you best wishes Jos
  • Hi,  I am newly diagnosed with breast cancer (fairly early) and have had an MRI scan of the breasts with surgery booked for May 6th.   I am wondering whether to have a mastectomy or a lumpectomy.  Any thoughts?

It seems that I will need to decide before the surgery, but the surgery will also take a lymph node for biopsy.  That means I have to make the decision about the type of surgery before I have the information from the biopsy.  That seems wrong to me, but is that usual?  I feel I may opt for the mastectomy to reduce the chance of recurrence by 5%, but the pictures I have seen online are off putting, with enormous scars right across the middle of the breast.  What are other people's experiences?

  • The oncologist team usually decides which operation is appropriate.  I am surprised you have been given the choice. The sentinel node biopsy is a separate operation and relates to whether the cancer has spread to your nodes. Even if you have mastectomy and the lymph nodes are found to be infected, then they will have to remove them from under your arm. To be frank, the size of the scars is nothing compared to a healthy life afterwards. I had two different cancers removed via lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. Just finished 15 radiotherapies. 5 years of tablets now. I was pleased to have ANYTHING done, having lost two aunties to breast cancer and my mum surviving.
