R-CHOP Chemo - please share your experiences

Hi

I don't have an official diagnosis just yet (the suspicion is that is some tin very rare) but whatever it is it is behaving like lymphoma. I was told on Friday that my current treatment (steroids) isn't working and I'll likely start R-CHOP chemotherapy in the next couple of weeks. I'd be grateful if anyone who has been through this would share their experiences.

I have two young children and I'm wondering whether I will still be able to look after them or if I should start planning additional childcare?  I make and decorate cakes and I've read that one of the drugs can affect your fine motor skills - is it likely that I'll still be able to do this or should I start cancelling orders?

Will I still be able to drive, food shopping, school run etc?

Thanks

  • Hi Pdog

Hope you are doing OK. The horrible taste in mouth seemed to come and go with me and the nausea went after 4 days. I too had a lot of headaches, very uncomfortable. I hope your daughter is feeling better, it's good you moved out - infections are not good!!!!

I found it a bit of a balancing act regarding aches and pains and when to take paracetamol. I always take temperature first,  then  paracetamol.

Sorry you are feeling down and tearful, I think it is hard to take it all in and scary at times. I've had  days of feeing really low and not wanting to face it. It's hard on the family too, my children,, partner, friends are all upset about the illness, chemotherapy and so on, it's a bit of a nightmare. I guess 1 day at a time is all anyone of us can do.

My partner cried when he first saw my patchy hair, now he's used to it and it is fine, just another thing to get to grips with.

I had reflexology today, lovely, PET CT scan tomorrow to see the state of play and back to chemo next week. Part of me is dreading it, I just hope no more infections or anything else horrible.

    Take care

    Sara

  • I had my first round of Rchop a week ago.  I did fine with it.  My next dose is the 26th.  I had my hair cut short in prep for it coming out.  The nausea meds they gave me take care of any nausea.  The biggest thing I noticed is a sensitivity to smells that lasts about 5 days after your first treatment.  My legs were a bit weak for the the first 5 days and I have to be very careful about my balance.  Yesterday I had the mouth ulcers arrive but nothing to bad.  My doctor called me in some mouthwash.  Luckily I am only going to have to have about 4 chemo follwed by a few radiation treatments.  Be very careful around anyone sick when you start the rchop.  Get plenty of rest and let your family take care of you.

  • Had my first Rchop two weeks ago. The infusion caused no problems. On steroids for a week on diminishing scale. I felt great, appetite shot up and despite them I slept really well and took a short bicycle ride. This reaction may in part be due to the fact that I was in a lot of pain over the previous three months until it was diagnosed. After the first session shrank the enlarged lymph nodes in the stomach  the pain simply disappeared. A wow moment. Since then apart from a little tiredness I live at a slower pace but normally. On the tenth day I felt shaky, about which I had been warned. I am not sure I would have the energy to look after young children. Your schedule sounds pretty intensive, give yourself a break and give up the cakes until you have some idea of the effect on you- each individual is different. Best wishes.

  • You will still be able to do school drops and drive, but it may be best to avoid for 24 hours after treatment. I found 9 was lethargic for a while.

  • I had the same, understand your feeling about hair loss. As a man I also didn't want to lose my hair. Treat ment is very good and it works. Stay positive and you will be just fine.

    Kind regards

    Vijai

  • Hi - very late to this particular thread however sharing my experience..

had my first round of RChop yesterday and luckily, for me it was very uneventful. The experience can be different for everyone but my nurse told me they don't naturally expect anyone to react too badly too it, and are quick to act and rectify if this happens. For me, I found the rituximab absolutely fine and didn't notice it. The other drugs given on the drip caused a tiny bit of a sting on the hand but nothing at all unbearable.

Got home very hyper from the steroids and very hungry. Slept well for the most part but woke up early hours feeling quite sick. Immediate action with the prescribed sickness meds really helped, and I was back to sleep in no time

    hope this helps someone
