Hair after Chemo

Hello All

I have been reading some information about hair after chemo although I have quite a few sessions left to go (7) but there's nothing like looking ahead (no pun intended), could anyone let me know if when their hair came back if it came back their original colour or came back grey as I have just started losing mine and this is after one session number 2 next week what joys. I think I will lose it all by the time I have finished so will wait and see next week what happens and if need be just have it all shaved of rather than waiting to have a few strands left.

Look forward to hearing about your experiances

  • Hey Littlesis

I realised that you are concerned about your hair, have you ever tried wearing a lace wig? I am now a hairdresser and i have 4 clients who suffers hairloss from cancer and alopecia. They've been wearing lace wig ever since the hair loss and i can honestly say that they do feel a lot better. i do sometimes wear a wig when i'm feeling a bit down and it helps with my confidence, I wish you all the best with the rest of your chemo and please remember to stay strong.

  • Hi Lady3t

Thank you for your response, I have not looked into any wigs as yet this is on the agenda early next week after I have my 2nd chemo on Friday, I see you mentioned a lace wig what exactly is it not to sound stupid and where can I either get one from or have a look at them.

    Look forward to your reply

    Thanks

  • Hi Littlesis,

If you google 'Lace wigs' there are many sites with loads of information. Good luck. Rodis.

  • Hi Again littlesis

As Rodis says you can google it to see the image, but the like of beyonce and tyra banks all wears a lace wig. It covers the whole head and it looks natural. My cousin works in the lace wig department in america and thats where i get them from, the prices are very good. I'm currenlty trying to raise some money for cancer research as part of these sale 2% of each sale is donated to them. My friends gave me that idea as i have access to the wigs and i'm so pleased i followed them as it has made a massive difference, not just for me but for the women who leave my salon feeling like a woman again.

I hope i have helped in some way. Please try not to let your hair get in the way of you being happy.

    Take care

  • Hi Lady3t

Hope this finds you well, I would ike to say thank you for your help in this, I have been on the web to have a look at them but to be honest wasn't really concentrating as had my 2nd chemo yesterday so will wail until the begining of the week. If I do have any problems would you mind directing me to a good company as I see you deal with an American firm or would you be able to source for me as if a % goes to help Cancer Reasearch then that would be even better.

I will let you know how I get on

Take Care and hope you are having a fab weekend

  • Hi Littlesis - thought I'd join you on your own thread!

I have found my wig (on prescription) to be an invaluable accessory! It took a bit of getting used to, but it definitely has a place in the wardrobe! People are amazed if I choose to tell them that my 'new hairdo' is actually a wig. I have never seen so many mouths drop to the floor - its quite entertaining!

I also have a lovely stripy cotton cap/hat which I bought from a company called suburbanturban. It was bloomin expensive - but I've worn it lot when doing sport (yes - I'm managing to play on a ladies cricket team!) I've definitely got my moneys-worth out of it!

Bandanas are also quite good - especially in this lovely heat wave we have at the moment.

Never wear a wig next to a wooded area in the evening, though. The midgies made a nest in mine whilst I watched my son play footy - my poor little head was COVERED in bites and itchy as hell!

Best of luck - and just wear what you feel comfy in.

  • Hi All

Hope you are all doing well, sorry have not got back to you sooner but had 2nd chemo on Friday so had a bit of a rest over the weekend in all that lovely sunshine lol.

I have had a good look around on the web for hats, turbans, scarfs wigs etc and there are so many to choose from I was quite surprised so thank you for your help in this. I have now bought a few items but not yet the wig as I have now had to shave all my hair of as when I washed it it felt like my head was moving around and then when I rinsed of the shampoo I had quite a little shock, oh well a small price to pay to get better and at the end of the day it grows back and I might not get any grey back lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take care and once agin thank you so much for the help and understanding I really do appreciate this.

  • Hi Linda,

I decided to shave off my hair shortly after it started thinning. It was so liberating. I asked my son to help me, I'm not sure who was more scared him or me. I was starting to resemble a tortorise, where my neck was receding into my shoulders everytime he took a sweep with the blade. I personally decided not to bother with the wig and opted for bandanas and scarves, which mostly I make myself. Now although I don't have to bother about washing, drying and styling my hair, I do now spend that time on colour co-ordinating my scarf with my outfit for the day and making sure it's positioned right and what ever I saving on hair products I'm now spending on material.

It's also weird that I have this stubble from where I shaved my head and it grew slightly, which is still falling out, to having this, what can only be described at bum fluff growing from where my pre shaved hair fell out. Unfortunately it's coming back mainly grey/white.

As Shents said 'just wear what you feel comfy in'.

  • Hi Shents,

Just have to say you always put a smile on my face with your way with words, and for anybody out there who doesn't know this lady has her own blog about her journey from diagnoises to present day.

    keepyerhairon.blogspot.com

I have read them all from the beginning, some thought provoking, some sad but in the main funny and some downright hilarious! You and your blogs are inspirational and I recommend everyone to read them.

  • Hey there littlesis

I hope you are feeling much better than you did on friday, been very busy at work and taking the kids to school. Anyway, if ou do want the wigs I will get my cousin to check if they have your size what you can do in the meantime is get a tape measure and measure the perimeter of your head and let me know. I can give you afew websites that sells the wig and you can look at them. If you want to buy it from my cousin then you can do that and minus the % that will go to cancer research.

Hope all goes well for you
