Colorectal cancer and liver metastasis aged 36

Hello, I’ve recently been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and had emergency surgery to remove part of my bowel and the tumour due to intussusception. I’m now recovering from surgery but am waiting for MDT meeting to find out what happens next. I am aware that the cancer has spread to my liver and I’m feeling very scared. I only got married last year and I have a 12 year old and a 7 year old.

Hello David. Had my review with oncology today. They are starting me on 2 different types of chemo, if I am able to tolerate this they will then add a third. This will hopefully shrink the lesions with the intent to target them with something else. I won’t be make to have an operation on the liver, so this is the next best thing. They have said it’s not curable but treatable.
not the news I wanted, but I will keep my strength and mental health focused!!
hoping I have a few more years yet

  • Hello Angela,

iits good to read that you now have a degree of certainty and a way forward. You should start your chemo regime pretty quickly and hopefully will cope well with that and see success from the treatment.

The thing to appreciate is that you are now on a Cancer journey, but you seek to change the destination but cannot always cease the travel, so pacing yourself and being prepared to change trains as you progress is helpful to bear in mind.

This is me just back from hospital with my sixth blockage in 6 years, a 24 hour blip until the bowel releases and then back to the fray, thank goodness for quick paramedic response and Morphine though.

It shows that the lines between cured,as in my case, and treatable can be wafer thin when the surgical intervention leaves behind contentious aftereffects, showing sometimes less can be more

Bring the best you to your treatment and remember the effects can be cumalative so do not overstretch yourself at the beginning,

    take care,

    David

  • Hello David,

As someone who has had matastesised  bowel cancer in 2009 it had spread toy aorta.chemo then radiotherapy then op sroma bag for six months the reversed, you are so right in saying not every thing shows.I am not going to put down the problems I have with my bowels as not every body has them ,but although my cancer is cured now and I appreciate how lucky I am ,my life has certainly been changed forever

    Best wishes

  • Thankyou David. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had another blockage!! I hope you are back to full strength very soon.

im going to fight this with everything I have, I’m not ready to give up yet!

it’s been so lovely chatting with you, can I look at you kniw how I get on with the chemo?

    Hello Angela,

yes please keep in touch, and l was back to looking after my horses sheep and cows within 30 hours, so no problems as long as the blockage releases,

l have the feeling that you have the right attitude and mental outlook to be able to emerge out the other side,

    David

  • Hello Ruggles,

Mine only decided to go on vacation to the liver, a bit like a Southend-on-Sea destination. Yours obviously decided on visiting a more exclusive destination like a remote Pacific Island,

But here we exchanging words 15 to 12 years later and hopefully like myself, you are physically active and as busy as before our intruders decided upon a visit.

Mental attitude playsa big part in recovery, my aftereffects have to live with me, not l with themm and l expect that will resonate with yourself,

like myself , keep travelling down that road,

    David

  • David, thankyou for you reply ,I agree a positive attitude really helps .I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer caught early ,thankgoodness so hopefully being positive and keeping active will carry me through.

    Take care
