Triple negative diagnosis - concerned treatment starting too late

Hi - my mum was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on the 8th December but is not due to start her chemo until 24th January - I am concerned that as this a very aggressive cancer and already in 2 nodes under her arm that this is a long time she has been waiting. Did anyone else wait 6 weeks for chemo? Sadly she didn’t tell us until two weeks ago so couldn’t help her to try and get treatment sooner. She was unfortunate with Christmas time in between. I am not sure why it has taken so long though. She only had her MRI last week (the 18th jan) and no CT yet to see if it has spread. Absolutely terrified of what’s to come - anyone had a similar experience - thanks in advance

  • Hi Carol - thanks for your message / she’s had three chemo sessions now they are happening every week. So far she is ok. Some side effects but she is coping very well. Still no CT scan to speak of yet and so our anxiety over whether it has spread elsewhere continues to grow. My sister has also now been referred for a hard lump which she has found as well as rash.

  • Oh no I am so sorry to hear this. 3rd time and after your surgery. I wish you all the best for your treatment and your appointment on the 16th. Can I ask how you know it’s metastatic - does that mean it’s in other places now? We are still waiting for my mums CT - pray it’s soon - best of luck to you

  • HI Bambi,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis and I can understand your concerns. As you can see from other replies, the waiting time for treatment to start is fairly normal. When there is a need for additional MRI or CT scans this delays things, but these additional tests are often needed with Triple Negative. She is obviously a brave lady to have kept her diagnosis a secret over the Christmas period and I wish her well with her treatment. I am sure that she will feel much happier in herself, now that she has told you and knows that you are there to support her through this.

Please keep in touch and let us know how your mum gets on. We are always here for you both.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Bambi , I had a ct scan after the lump biopsies confirmed cancer and that was when they dropped the bombshell that it had left the breast and was in the wall of my chest so it isn't curable only treatable,  sending prayers and special thoughts to you and your mum,  it's such a scary time for you all xx
