Prostate cancer treatment options. What to go for?

I have just been diagnosed prostate cancer, 4+3 gleeson and 5.4psa. Just don't know what to decide upon for treatment. Radiotherapy and hormone seems the soft option but should I rush into deciding surgery?  Torn between De Vinci op, at least I can have Radiotherapy afterwards if something is missed. Most concerned about incontinence, how long might it last? I am very active sport wise and would suffer mentally if not near to normality after 6 months?

  • Hi Steveann,

I have had a recent advanced prostate cancer diagnosis, when I heard I wanted removal of prostate, but my consultant advised against it, as the cancer is in nearby lymph nodes, - he advised you could reove prostate  but there is still probability it will spread from the lymph nodes. He advised that with targeted

external beam radiotherapy and hormone treatment  there is a better chance of success. HOWEVER

it is very much for you to discuss with your consultant to decide the best way forward for you (my PSA on intial diagnosis 36 and 32, with gleason  4-5 and 7-8) . recent blood test have shown my PSA now down to 2.5, (but testosterone still too high, so changed from Prostap to Zoladex inj'n to see if any improvement. Hope this helps

  • When I originally posted, surgery was an option but my bone scan showed 3 hotspots. First I was told ...its spread, no surgery only hormone treatment ...but a few days later after  a review, I was told I could have a pet scan to specifically check the hotspots! So I'm waiting for this scan. Bit confusing.
