Surgery for breast surgery

Ok, scared now. I have breast cancer. Surgery booked for Mondy (28th). Radiotherapy and menopause inducing drugs to come. Anyone been in the same situation got any advice? Please!

Update - now waiting for surgery number 3! They found more cancer (15mm grade 2) and an affected lymph node (now 2 out of 7) during surgery 2. My treatment plan after surgery (if successful) has yet to be discussed. If surgery 3 doesn't come back clear, a mastectomy may be the only option. Had enough of this now. The waiting is getting me down. The not knowing whether chemo is needed or not is taking over my head. Struggling to get motivated.

Surgeon and cancer nurse have mentioned the optima trial - just adding to my things to think about. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Hi,

Yes it was a hard decision but felt it was right for me, I know my chances of it recurring is very high but I guess I'll face that if and when it happens.

I only had the one lump , at first they thought it measured 22cm and thought it had gone into one lymph node but after they'd removed it they realsied it measured 28 cm and had spread to 13 lymph nodes,  plus they didn't get clear margins so needed another to get them which they did , but because it had spread to 13 lymph nodes they said it was grade 3 and needed to do a bone scan and CT scan to see if it had spread elsewhere.

The bone scan came back clear , the CT scan showed a shadow on my right lung (breast cancer was in the left side) they seen a shadow on my kidney , that turned out to be a fatty benign lump needing no treatment , the lung shadow is a nodule and need to do more CT scans to keep an eye on it , well I had another CT scan about 3/4 weeks ago now and they rang me to say I'd need another CT scan in May because the nodule had changed , she didn't explain what it meant or anything else but did say if it had changed again in May would I be prepared to see the Consultant again , like you say there isnt any point fretting about it at the moment until things are finalised.

I'm ok the original diagnosis kicked me about and sent me back in depression , but after 6 months I'm slowly starting to pick up .

    Hope you're OK? X

  • Interesting question I can't answer. I guess once treatment is finished and you're given the all claer, then you no longer have cancer... ? Dunno... x

  • Thinking of you today Jenny. Hope you are feeling ok.

  • Hi Jenny,

Hope it’s  gone ok today and you’re not suffering.

    Thinkng of you x

  • Hi Bettyjayne,

How are you getting on? Hope the waiting for oncology isn't driving you too nuts!

Just realised you teach - I'm a HLTA. Like you, I decided to not return to work, as advised by my surgeon. Work have been very supportive so far.

Still having up and down days. The down days are taking over though. Saw my daughter yesterday and loved talking about her new house etc.  Felt good to laugh for once!

    Keep in touch.

    Nicky

  • Morning Nicky ,

Wow we are so similar. I am a HLTA but am responsible for planning and teaching year 3 and 4 maths (I job share with a teacher, I only work 3 days a week).

Went to see my boss yesterday and he's very supportive too. I've been there 22 years without any time off before this.

I'm having lots of down days and feel constantly drained. Had very little sleep last night so got up tired. It's a vicious circle.

I really hope my oncologist appointment comes today.

I've practically ran to the door every door this week hoping it'll be here. My surgeon said it would be about 2 weeks before I had it, it's been a week now and no indication of when it'll be.

Keeping busy today with my 18 month old granddaughter and husband. Off to Lidl for food for a BBQ tomorrow with my 2 grown up daughters (30 and 27 ) and my grandsons 7 and 5. Need to enjoy this weather.
Wish I could enjoy this year but so far so many bad things have happened.

    Take care

    Jayne xx

  • Oh my word! Along with HLTA I am also computing lead. Also been there for 22 years. And my daughter is 27! Funny old world. No grandchildren yet though.

Hope your appointment comes soon. My husband has an op on his hand on Tuesday which is taking my mind off it all a little. It's just something different to worry about.

Great weather for a BBQ - enjoy!

    Love

    Nicky

  • Hopes your does too.

I'm wondering if there is a way for direct contact?
So a husband to worry about too! What a rubbish time for you.

Try and have a good day .

  • I have sent you a friend request. X

  • How you doing? Hope you’re resting and taking it easy xx
