After pains from lymph node removal

Hi. I've had my lymph nodes removed at same time and lumpectomy. 3 and half years ago. Still have lots of nerve pain. Arm feels like it's in a vice at times. Tendons feel stretched beyond their limits. Often tight dwellings under arm. Is this natural after surgery. I know it takes time but ..... tx

  • I had lumpectomy on 5 January followed by radiation which finished on 15 March.  A few weeks after radiation I started having awful pain & discomfort on right side which just got progressively worse so now getting physio again this week so just hoping that it will get easier, everything you say is what I am experiencing right now, still have burning pain etc  3.5 years is a long time to still have pain, hope it eases soon for you xx

  • Hi just reading your post I had a mascetomy a week ago and lymph node removal, can I ask how long after yours did you get chemo they said I will need chemo and possible my radio! I just get really confused with everything.  I have to go to get my results hopefully this week I don't really no what to expect

  • Hello,

I had my masectomy in Dec 2019 and as I recall I didn't start chemo until the scar was well and truly healed, a good few months after the surgery. I had cancer in two of my lymph node's and a 2cm lump removed. I remember how quickly I got over the surgery and the relief that the cancer lump was gone.  The chemo and radiotherapy is to make sure that all the cancer cells have been removed. You are in the midst of it all now and I know how overwhelming it all is, but trust in your team and they will guide you through. Ask as many questions as you can, the consultant will give you the results of the lymph node removal, fingers crossed for you that they are clear.  It seems unbelievable now that I can't remember so much and yet in the midst of treatment it overtakes your life.

I was on this site all the time, it really helps to talk to other people who have been through it.

Wishing you all the best and I'll always reply if it helps

  • Thank you for your reply yes it is all very over whelming! When they diagnosed they told me it was in the lymph nodes so I'm guessing that's why they are giving me treatment. They said the cancer in my breast was 9.5 cms so quite big and the mascetomy was my best option but I tok felt a sense of relief that the cancer had been cut away it all happened so quickly now I'm gathering questions to ask at my next appointment.

  • Yes, get rid of the cancer and any further treatment will kill off any remaining cells. Although the journey is similar everybody is different so your consultant and oncologist will guide you. The nurses are so caring too. The NHS really look after you.
